As I was told to, I was taking a break. Basking up the sunshine in the township/city, Al Sawq, in Qatar. I had arranged a three day trip out here. On the third day I felt relaxed and energetic, for the first time in a while, so before heading home to Belgium I stopped off at the local Qatar Optics cycling centre.
When I approached the centre a young African man, who looked seriously bedraggled with a dirty 6 string guitar on his back came up to me, he just wouldn't leave me alone. Something was painstakingly familiar about that guitar. After realising I couldn't rid myself of his presence I decided to ignore him.
As I approached the reception desk, I asked how things were going on at the centre, my companion seemingly fed-up, wandered off.
At the reception desk the man said a young man had recently turned up out of nowhere and had been coming to the centre practically everyday for two weeks, far outperforming everyone else seemingly, he said he would email the team HQ the file on the mysterious rider. We shook hands and I left the building.
As I exited the building I tiptoed carefully my way to the car, where my driver Khalif was waiting, successfully avoiding the young man who hassled me before, a man who impossibly possessed a guitar I was sure I had seen before.
Ten minutes later we arrived at the air strip when it hit me.....'Turn the car around' I shrieked out to the driver for the penny had dropped.
I recognised where I had seen the guitar the young African was carrying, in my dream, a dream I had had countless dozens of times, haunting me this past year. I had to find this man. We headed our way back to the centre, hoping against hope that the young African was still there.
When I returned to the cycling centre on the outskirts of western Al Sawq, there was not a sign anywhere of the young African. I was about to give up hope when I entered the centre..... and to my relief and surprise standing at the reception area was the young African with his guitar harnessed.
The receptionist arose to greet me and introduced the young man, called Nadjib as a recent refugee from Sudan. That's not the best part, the best part is he is the very man who was producing the outstanding results at the centre.
I went into the foyer and talked away with Nadjib for what seemed like an eternity. He told me everything, a few months ago he escaped his country after being held at gunpoint by some rebels in his native village. He had had enough, hoboing he headed north, when he got to Egypt he said he heard about our centres in Qatar and after a month worked his way to Al Sawq, here in Qatar.
I asked him where he found the guitar, he said he just found it laying amidst the barren wastelands of northern Sudan. He even played a few chords. He told me he had loved to cycle for as long as he could remember.
After pulling some strings and once again reviewing the results he was posting, I took the bold step to offer him a contract for the next season. The very young man graciously accepted, refusing to stop shaking my hand!
Next season the professional ranks will have its first cyclist from Sudan and he will be riding for Qatar Optics. That night I slept well for the first team in a year.

We went into the hilly TT with long shot hopes that Bakelants would maintain his overall podium position.....
but by one stinking second he loses his position to Taaramae with one stage to go.

@ Pfan - Well that last dream was about Yildiz and that worked out OK, so lets hope so..... the python will be coming to the Giro, lets hope he brings nothing but luck!
On the last stage, a hilly stage although the climbs came half way into the stage, at Romandie we got Felline, who was on a good day, into the break which also included reigning Giro winner Salas. ExxonMobil weren't willing to catch the break so the break would fight out the victory....
Into the final and Felline goes with the both attacks from Faiers....
and our Milan San Remo winner claims his second win of the season, easily the strongest in the finale. Bakelants finishes fourth and thanks to the break Felline finishes 9th. A very successful small tour for us.

TEAM CLASSIFICATION: Qatar Optics @ '24 over ExxonMobil
STAGE 8:Side - Alanya 157 KM's
On the final stage Yildiz was the fastest sprinter, just edging Haussler and Kreder but a late attack from Ospina takes the stage win, Long finishes on the podium.
We extend our lead big time in the month of April. Although I won't count the chickens before they hatch. Largely down to the great performances from Gallopin (over 500 CQ points) and Felline (now over 400 CQ points).
Episode 4:
I am really glad to be seeing the team do so well at the moment, I will be following with interest as the team compete in a GT for the first time, the Giro. Although, exactly how much I will watch will be difficult to gauge as I have my busiest race program of the year in early May.
First off I will be racing in Dunkerque before my first ever race outside of France, which will be the tour of the Czech Republic. Lately I certainly feel stronger and more able on the climbs, the coaches tell me I've made big improvements already. I am pumped for the weeks ahead.
After we rode much of stage 1 riding down the break, with no one wanting to pull back the break, we put Long into the break on stage 2. Once again the break succeeded. Long lead out the sprint from a long way out, Fairly came past him, Long continued on and almost caught and passed Fairly put has to settle for second in a close finish.

@ Sutty Yeah Felline had to much for that break and Long surprises to do well in Turkey, Hong Kong people will loooove that! Edited by The Rider on 18-08-2013 19:57
Woah, lets not get ahead of ourselves with the Tour of Turkey... I mean, what if the French doping labs pin a witch-hunt on CS Long to frame him for doping crimes, because they want Laurent Pichon to finish on the podium of the prestigious Tour of Turkey?! (Mustafa Sayar reference)
As winning the KOM jersey was the main goal from our sponsors we shall go for that. Our team will have multiple riders capable depending on how the race pans out. Other than that we have a squad fit to compete on multiple terrains, Rojas will be targeting the sprints, Felline will be going for everything! Kritskiy will be targeting the TT's. Roche will be going for GC as our leader, if not the KOM jersey.
@ Sutty - Yeah in the small races, but now the Giro is here!
@ Pfan - To be fair no one wanted to win in Turkey! For shame irl on that Turkish team failing two years in a row. Edited by The Rider on 18-08-2013 21:13
The Frenchman will wear the NO.1 shirt, quite a dubious decision as many former Giro winners will be racing, Martin and Henao notably. His best GC performances are from last year where he finished both the Giro and TDF in the top 10.
Gesink (Argos)
The Dutchman finished two GT's in the top 5 last year and will surely be gunning for the top step of the podium here.
Duran (ExxonMobil)
The former world TT champ may be a dark horse for the overall, a great all rounder who can be a force to be reckoned with in top top form.
Frank (American Express)
Many people are tipping the Swiss rider to do well and why not, if in form he will be there or thereabouts.
Ultimately it is hard to gauge who will even be in shape to contest the Giro win. In recent years riders aiming for TDF glory have used this race as a warm up, Schleck last year and in our team V.D.B this year. Many surprises are bound to be afoot.
The green jersey conversation:
Farrar(RIM)
Farrar has won well over ten Giro stages, many under my stewardship and has already cemented his stature as one of the fastest sprinters ever.
Kittel (Euskaltel)
The German has shown that he can beat the elite and in the many sprint stages it should be a straight up show down between Kittel and Farrar, with both there teams in full support. World champ Boasson Hagen can't be counted out, neither can our man Rojas or Felline who seems just about to win stages in every GT he enters. Young American, Beck, for American Express and Williams, ExxonMobil can't be counted out. Neither can the prospect of a GC man taking the jersey, if a one man Giro develops.
The KOM jersey conversation:
Pirazzi (Farnese Vini)
It is really hard to say who is the competition for the KOM jersey, Pirazzi won the title back in 2017 and has finished second behing Duarte in the same ranking in the TDF. If Pirazzi really goes for this jersey our goal will be difficult to achieve as no one quite attacks like he does.
That brings the preview to a close. Along with other wildcards, Colnago, Willier and Energie: Qatar Optics will be entering its first GT, may we do our darndest!
@ Sutty - Thanks a lot let's see how this mammoth race develops. Edited by The Rider on 18-08-2013 21:44
There are many more picturesque places to start a Giro than downtown Taranto but there you go. We start with a short technical prologue, we have two of the main favourites, a win would be huge to start off the Giro.
The first man to set a time which could challenge for the stage was the Brit Tennant(Gazprom). He finished the course in 8'39, this proved to be the benchmark for a long time.
Energie (Proch is shot) are the smallest team in the race, on this stage they may well get more TV coverage than any other.
Kritskiy was the first big gun of the arsenal to be released, our former Russian TT champ was equal at the first checkpoint with Tennant @ 3'55.....
however our man blistered round the course to finish @ 8'25, '13 seconds faster than Tennant.
But the racing was by no means over Faiers (Gazprom) went through the checkpoint @ 3'53 .........but finished '7 seconds down on the big Russian @ 8'33.
Then was the turn off Felline, he went through the split time @ 3'53 also but finished down on Kritskiy's time @ 8'32.
Castroviejo goes through the first split at 3'51 .....but doesn't have the same resistance as Kritskiy and wilts in the second half finishing '5 seconds down at 8'30.
With that I was becoming more and more confident in the feeling that we might pull this off.
The last round of riders come off the ramp. One man is a real danger, French champ Houanard. He goes through the split time first @ 3'47....
and my heart sinks as he crosses the line first beating Kritskiy by '5 seconds so the Frenchman will win the stage and don the pink jersey. All is far from lost, all in all that was an impressive start for the team, with two riders a breath away from the lead. No time bonues were awarded, defending Giro champ Martin finished well down while Cattaneo was the best of the GC men.
Stage is two is, on paper, one for the sprinters, however there are two 5 kilometre 4% climbs in the stage. The Villago di Turistico and the Lauretto climbs won't suit the sprinters, however the last summit comes 70 kilometres from the end.
A 12 man break formed on the day, including two riders from Energie and Willier, a great day for those teams. Malori was the best placed rider. Roberto Ferrari(Farnese Vini) would be the first wearer of the coveted KOM jersey after his efforts on the two climbs.
With 40 kilometres all looked in control. FDJ and the sprinter teams were controlling the break to the tune of 3:00. But with 30 kilometres to go all changed......Roche falls.....
We send Feillu and Clarke back to help Roche regain contact which he manages his to do.
But the break have extended their advantage, FDJ and the sprinter teams just look at each other and no team puts in a concertive chase. With 10 kilometres to go the break have 2:00, a terrible effort by Euskaltel, FDJ and RIM, the break would contest the finish.
Roberto Ferrari wins the stage and thanks to time bonuses overhauls Malori, who was in the break, and will become the new wearer of the pink jersey. Felline and Boasson Hagen lead the bunch home after attacking in the last kilometre. A really strange stage, surely on stage 3 the sprinter teams will be more interested.
We could have let Roche take some time losses after his crash, which may have helped our KOM jersey aspirations, but we decided no to.

@ Sutty - Many stages to get something big out of this Giro!
@ Ian Butler - Yeah it is
Well I have completed stage 4 in Dunkerque and it was a real killer, having said that I am very glad because I doubt I would have finished the stage in poor conditions last year. I am becoming much more accustomed to riding in the peloton all the time, getting right behind the 'fatter' riders, staying our of the wind.
It was a really fun day today, Long and French champ Demaret told some jokes out on the road which went some way to relieving the pain in the legs!
