The Tour De Langkawi. At 11 stages it's one of the longest events of the Continental Tour, so and with the infamous climb into the Genting Highlands along with a 20km TT, it'll be a testing race for the teams, and a good opportunity for the CT squads to show off there GC riders and Stage Racers.
We kick off with a medium length TT. At 20km it's going to have an immediate effect on who can compete for the GC, so expect a tough battle for both the stage and amongst the contenders.
Stage 2 is one for the sprinters, however, the penultimate 2km are ascending, so it might be tough for the more pure sprinters to hang on for a fight at the finish line.
A similar recipe to yesterday, though the stage is a bit longer, and the final climb slightly tougher, perhaps this will be one for the break then?
I'm sure you recognise this formula, any hilly sprinter will be looking good here, and we have the very best on stage, that's right Sagan is going to be mixing it up in malaysia!
The organisers are confused by this stages "flat" rating, it'll be a toughy and the GC men should start to flex there muscles here, especially those guys who were found lacking in the TT!
The toughy, only 124km in length but finishing in the Genting Highlands after 19.6km uphill at an average of 5.5% A proper alpine style climb, but in a Malaysian climate!
After the climb to Muar yesterday, the riders face a stage which would fit happily into the Ardennes! 200km and up and down all day long over short sharp climbs, one for the break, or the punchiest GC men!
If any sprinters remain, they'll look forward to this 100km day with a flat finish. If teams are willing to chase the break, this should be a banker for a rapid finish
Not dissimilar to the day before, though slightly harder. 168km and with a few bumps on the way
Short and flat, an apt description of the final stage. It'll either be lazy, or very fast and the sprinters will be keen to make good of such a gift to finish this race off.
*****
Rein Taaramae
Wilco Kelderman
***
Gustav Erik Larsson
Renaldo Nocentini
*
Paolo Tiralongo
Jonathon Tiernan-Locke
John Gadret
Peter Sagan
With such a strong team here, it's hard to look past the Pervyj duo of Taaramae and Nocentini to take the GC. aside from them are a collection of strong climbers, but the only other rider who I feel is rounded enough to make a solid effort at the GC, is Sony Ericssons Gustav Larsson. Despite knowing he'll lose time on stage 6, Sagan cannot be overlooked completely for the GC, he'll challenge on the hilly days, and will be likely to collect a heap of bonus seconds!
*****
Peter Sagan
***
Aidis Kruopis
Theo Bos
Daryl Impey
*
Daniel Napolitano
Greg Henderson
Denis Galimzyanov
There can be no doubt that Sagan will be the standout favourites for the points jersey, he's not only the fastest sprinter here, but also one of the best punchers, so it's hard to look beyond him to take the points jersey.
behind him we have mostly second-tier sprinters competing, though a few names such as Theo Bos, and Daryl Impey will both surely be hoping to grab a stage victory along the way.
Race Start
The race will get going either later tonight or possibly tomorrow morning, depending on when I get a chance to race it. The stages will be in a similar format to those in The underdog tour.

The Omloop Het Nieuwsblad is the hardest to spell race of the season. It also marks the real start of the season. It is the opening cobbled race and the first historic race on the calendar. This race is packed with history, mystery and challenge. It should certainly be one to watch
It's a recognizable route that has not changed much over the recent years. It is 194.5km heading out of and back in to Gent. Just over 1000m of climbing makes this a flat rated race, which certainly opens it up to more contenders. 11.8km of cobbles are split over 8 main sections. The sections to watch all come in the back quarter of the race, which begins with the Taaienberg. In the back section also is the Eikenberg and Molenberg, along with over three quarters of the cobbles.
Fabian Cancellara:
Spartacus is joint race favorite. He lacks the finishing kick, and sheer cobbles talent of Tommoke, but Fabian is a better climber and better all-round rider. He also arrives with the best support team, headlined by Pozzato and Turgot. Expect to see him attacking on the climbs from a distance.
Team: MCS
Prediction: 2nd
Tom Boonen:
Tommoke is the other joint favorite. Perhaps the best classics rider of all-time returns to a race he likes. He always runs well on this weekend and will look to do so. If he is in the lead group at the line, there are very very few who could challenge him. His support team is also very tough, lead by Boom.
Team: ING
Prediction: 1st
Juan Antonio Flecha:
Juan is perhaps the best outsider in Belgium. He has always been consistent over the cobbles recently, but has never quite stood out as a winner. Just behind Spartacus and Tommoke in talent, he can still pound the rough roads and climbs. Without the pressure he may be allowed more freedom
Team: TLI
Prediction: 4th
Alessandro Ballan:
Ballan is no as good as he once was. But he is still a dangerous man. He can match most of the cobbles, and beat most on the climbs. His support is not great but not bad either. He has to go hard on the climbs to stand a chance. Expect long range attacks, probably in conjunction with other outsiders.
Team: FWB
Prediction: 3rd
Sylvain Chavanel:
Sylvain has really become a cobbled name in the last couple of years. He lacks the power on the cobbles of some other big names, but his ability on the hills and attacking never-say-never style is effective. Treated as an outsider he might be given a bit too much freedom late on.
Team: TLI
Prediction: 5th
Thats what i view as the Top 5 contenders. But there are a lot of other real challengers in attendance. Pozzato would be in there, but his priority is to help Cancellara and this could hinder his own chances. The same can be said of Boom who is talente, but shackled to helping Boonen. Terpstra heads the RBM team, and is the best of the CT cobblers, and he can't be discounted. Also look out for Vanmarcke of AXA. He is talented, but lacks even the most basic support.

Langkawi will be really interesting with so many 2nd / 3rd tier riders
Also looking forward to see the battle between Cancellara and Boonen in Omloop. |
