CSC went to Belgium with their cobbles team. O'Grady (last year winner) and Cancellara had full support and the team rookie, Andreassen was making his debut on this kind of races.

Opponents
Without Boonen, Hoste or Flecha, the biggest opponents were A. Klier (Quick Step) and G. Steegmans (Davitamon Lotto).
With 21 km to go Klier, Steegmans, Portal and Zabel attacked from the 10 men group where CSC men came.
Cancellara had to come to the front with 10 km to go as the 4 escapees had a dangerous lead.
Only O'Grady followed Cancellara's pace and they were now only 23'' from the race leaders.
They caught them with 3 km to go but it would be hard to discuss the win after that effort.
Nobody seemed to go to the front and Flickinger joined them. A 21 men group was also close.
Cancellara started to sprint when Steegmans did it but the big group was now also there.
Klier was looking strong when O'Grady started his sprint.
And O'Grady won the race on the line! Cancellara was 5th while Arvesen who came out of that big group was 9th.

It was harder than expected but CSC got another win on this belgian classic. The team have big expectations for Harelbeke, Wevelgem, Flanders and Roubaix. |

Volta Ciclista a Catalunya  Stage 4
Basso had lost time on the previous stage and he would want a hard race today. Although a very hard HC climb was on the way, again the last climb was a bit far from the line what didn't gave him much advantage.
CSC was forcing a strong pace during the HC climb but Caisse D'Epargne was holding on pretty well. Ahead 4 riders had 3'50 with 45 km to go.
As they started the final climb and with the escapees 1'22 ahead it's GC leader himself who attacks.
Arroyo caught the escapees while Basso and Pedraza were trying to get to them with 1.5 km to the end of the climb.
They managed to get them on the descent.
With 5 km to go a 23 men group was ahead.
With no sprinting arguments Basso saw Arroyo win another stage and 10 more seconds.

David Arroyo is showing himself very strong and Basso has one last mountain stage, this time with a summit finish to try to get to the lead. Stage 6 will be decisive, but before we'll have one more day to Haussler try to get his first win for CSC. |

E3 Prijs West Vlaanderen - Harelbeke
CSC took the same team that went to Dwars door Vlaanderen, although the competition was tougher with Hoste, Backstedt, Flecha, Ballan, Franzoi. But still no confrontation with Tom Boonen on the cobbles.
CSC wanted a hard pace and they worked hard for it.
With 39 km to go and starting another cobbled climb Leif Hoste attacked.
O'Grady had a puncture and CSC made Arvesen and Ljunqvist help him.
While CSC was facing O'Grady's problem Klier and Ballan were trying to join Hoste.
Cancellara couldn't let them leave and he went for them.
O'Grady and a 10 men group managed to get to the 4 ahead with 20 km to go. But immediately another attack was launched by Franzoi, Kopp and Pozzato.
With 7 km to go the front men had 30 seconds to the chasers where AG2R sprinter Nazón came. He was a real threat to a sprint finish.
With no one wanting to spent their energy chasing them, Cancellara had to go to the front.
With 2 km to go they got them. Nazon was on O'Grady's wheel.
O'Grady got trapped behins Steegmans and Ballan looked to be the strongest...
De Jongh almost got it but Ballan won! O'Grady got 5th place.

On the 5th day in Catalunya the profile of the stage was quite flat and fitted for sprinters.
CSC controlled the peloton on the last kilometers.

It wasn't today that Haussler got the win he is looking for. He still has the final stage to do it, but tomorrow it will be the day that CSC needs to give everything to help Basso win the GC. |

Volta Ciclista a Catalunya Stage 6
This was the fourth mountain stage on Volta a Catalunya, but this one actually had a summit finish. Although short (133km) the stage had difficulties all the way.
With 8 km to go and the two escapees almost caught Basso hits the head of the peloton with no more team mates left.
Miholjevic was resisting while Basso's pace seemed to be unbearable back there.
With 5 km to go Basso continued on his pace but he was now alone against a very strong and numerous group.
When Basso saw that the chasers where about to catch him he attacked.
Jufre, the mountain jersey, managed to jump out of the peloton and tried to leave Basso behind too.
Jufre didn't hold and Basso entered the final km with a slight gap.
But Basso was caught almost on the finish line and was only fifht while Patxi Vila won another stage.

Basso tried everything today but Caisse D'Epargne and the others were too strong. After winning the Tour de France last year he has lost Tirreno Adriatico and Volta a Catalunya. But he remains focused on winning Giro this year and Haussler will try to give a win to the team on the last stage.
Also tomorrow the team will be racing Gent-Wevelgem in what will be the first combat with Tom Boonen. |

Gent-Wevelgem Race Preview
The first of the three great cobbles classics had many potential winners. CSC was betting strong on the three and they wanted to win from the start.

- S. O'Grady

Breschel is back on his bike but his condition is not enough to participate on such a race. The team will be working for it's two leaders and there are two chances for CSC to win here. Cancellara attacking or O'Grady sprinting. With the presence of Boonen they both have less chances. On the other hand, CSC should have a stronger team than Phonak.
Top contenders
1 - Tom Boonen (Phonak) - this season is not being so successful as last year, but he already has 6 wins. Last year he won this race and it then he took Ronde and Roubaix as well. He'll be almost alone because his team doesn't have anyone who can support him properly.
2 - Fabian Cancellara (CSC) - His first win on these kind of classics is still to come and this might be his first chance. He has been solid this year and he has a very strong support. A sprint finish might make him work for O'Grady and take his favoritism away.
3 - Leif Hoste (Liquigas) - His situation is pretty identical to Cancellara since he has Backstedt, a fast man who is very good in cobbles. The rest of the support is not even close to what CSC can give, but a solo attack or a very restrict finish might give him the win.
4 - J. A. Flecha (Rabobank) - He will hardly win on a sprint finish but his attacking abilities might work on a solo move. His team will be working for him and they have quality to take him to the decisive moments in good position.
5 - G. Hincapie (Discovery) - Another guy who can win any of the three major cobbles classics. He has a good support and he is faster than some of favorites. An attack might also work for him.
6 - A. Klier (Quickstep) - The guy the team hired to Boonen's place will want to show himself and he is in good form like he showed in E3. The team is very solid and they will help him against their previous captain.
7 - S. O'Grady (CSC) - It is not obvious that he is CSC plan B. And if the team was fully support him, he should be far above on this list. He is a sprinter like Boonen and he rides really well in cobbles. A potential winner.
8 - M. Backstedt (Liquigas) - If he holds the pace to the end we might see Hoste working for him and like O'Grady see their situation inverted. He is not as fast as Boonen or O'Grady but he is faster than all the other mentioned.
9- T. Hushovd (Liberty Seguros) - The norwegian is able to make a good classification and he might even win it if he gets to a final sprint. His team is not that strong and he will have to trust on his legs to get to the end.
10- G. Steegmans (Davitamon Lotto) - He has been riding pretty well lately and his team is strong but only if he arrives on a small group without the sprinters mentioned above will he have chances to win.

Gent-Wevelgem
With 65 km to go Rabobank was setting a high pace and the main group was reduced to 17 men.
With 35 km to go only Cancellara and O'Grady, Boonen, Flecha, Hincapie, Hoste, Klier and Ivanov were at the front.
Ivanov was the first to attack.
Then Boonen did the same with Cancellara and Flecha trying to answer.
The swiss got to Boonen but Flecha and Hincapie also did.
After the last cobbled section Cancellara and Flecha got a little gap.
But they couldn't hold it and with 8 km the victory was to be decided between this 4.
And the final game started with Cancellara on Boonen's wheel. The belgian was clearly the favorite.
Hincapie was the first to sprint...
Boonen sprinted with Cancellara behind him...
But they went to late and Hincapie won! Cancellara got the wrong wheel.
O'Grady was seventh.

On a very hard race Cancellara had a bad decision on the final sprint. But a podium place is not bad. He will fell stronger for next week Ronde Van Vlaanderen. Hincapie won in great style and showed that Boonen is not invincible this year. |
