Tour de France review
What a Tour de France this was! One with only 1 mass sprint, so a playground for the attackers and puncheurs. 18 different stage winners, with only Cancellara, Contador and Gesink with 2 stage wins (when the final verdict about the Schleck-case comes, Contador will be awarded with the stage win and gets 3 wins) and a great 3-men battle for the GC-win.
Sadly, it wasn't only positive, because of 2 things: 85 riders finishing outside the timelimit in stage 9 and thus having to leave the Tour, and of course the blood doping use by Andy Schleck.

Top 5
1. Robert Gesink
Dutch Robert Gesink won the Giro and Vuelta in 2011, and was close to winning the Tour in 2012 (but lost the GC-lead in the final ITT). This year, at the age of 28, he has managed to become the successor of Joop Zoetemelk, 24 years after his Tour win and the last one for a Dutch cyclist. Gesink was strong all Tour long, and took 2 stage wins: at the Tourmalet and at the Mont Ventoux. In that last one, he took over the maillot jaune and kept it untill Paris.
2. Marcel Kittel
Not many sprinters can say that they have won all mass sprints in a Tour in 1 year. But German Marcel Kittel can! Okay, because of a complete failure of the teams to let stages end in a mass sprint, only the final stage at the Champs d'Elysées ended in a mass sprint. But already in green because of finishing consequently as one of the best sprinters, Kittel won that prestiguous sprint.
3. Alberto Contador
One bad day costed Alberto Contador the Tour-win. He was in control after winning the 8th stage to Superbagnères, where he became the GC-leader. After a 2nd stage win at the Col de Portet, he eventually extended his lead after the MTT at the Alpe d'Huez (and possibly another stage win). But the hunger knock in the 2nd half of the ascend of the Mont Ventoux made him drop to 3rd. Still, he deserves to be in the top 5!
4. Fabian Cancellara
Fabian Cancellara could not loose the first stage, the cobbled ITT in Roubaix, and he won it. He lost the maillot jaune after a few days, but a great punchy win in the 5th stage to Limoges brought hi back in yellow for 1 day.
5. Lars Boom
One of the most attacking riders this Tour must be Lars Boom. It brought him 1 day in the maillot jaune and the stage win in stage 19 to Montélimar. For sure some good 21 days!
Flop 5
1. Andy Schleck
The biggest flop of this Tour was of course Andy Schleck. He suffered a stomach flu the week before the Tour, so lost some valuable time in the first stage. After having recovered, he improved in the Pyrénées and crushed the opposition in the MTT to Alpe d'Huez, already improving to the 4th place in the GC. But the next day got discovered why he managed to do that: blood doping. He got kicked out of the Tour, admitted to be guilty, and will probably be gone out of the cycing world for ever.
2. The sprinters
8 chances for the sprinters, and only the final stage became a mass sprint... What went wrong? Well, almost none of the teams wanted to chase the BOTD, they were all looking at each other. And many sprinters (Cavendish, Ciolek, Farrar, Guardini, Nizzolo, Greipel and Degenkolb) finished outside the time limit in stage 9. Still, a big flop!
3. Bradley Wiggins
If it wasn't for the final ITT, Bradley Wiggins wouldn't even be in the Top 10 of the GC. He simply couldn't follow the best climbers in the mountains.
4. Jurgen Van den Broeck
Jurgen Van den Broeck starts every GT with the goal of getting a top 5. But the Belgian seems to have an eye for loosing time in the first week. Result: 14th place in the GC and no stage win. It looks like Belgium has to wait even longer before somebody becomes the successor of Lucien Van Impe (winner in 1976).
5. The spectators
Where have they all gone? No spectators this Tour? Or they have all been killed before the Tour due to a virus or huge disaster, or the tv-broadcast was that great, that it was better to watch the Tour at home....
That's all for the 2014-Tour.

Tour of Qinghai Lake
In the last week of the Tour, another part of the professional cycling peloton was riding in China for the Tour de Qinghai Lake. This 9-stage race is held near the biggest Chinese lake, in the Tibetan Highlands. The lake lies at an altitude of 3205 metres above sea level, so the oxygen-circumstances are way different than in any other race.
Last year, the race was won by Alitalia's (that time it was still Pinatellastoria) Enrico Rossi.

Our Team
Our Goal
This race is important for our main sponsor Petronas, what is the reason we start here instead in the Österreich Rundfahrt. We start with a pretty strong team with Kelderman for the GC and Jens Mulder for the mass sprints. The goal is a stage win and the top 3 in the GC.

2 great days of cyling...
Robert wins the tour and Marcel as well as our fellow Panzerwagen take two stages
and of course, great reports just as usual
I wonder if Schleck would have had a chance to win the tour, if he hadn't been kicked out
Still, one of the greatest tours of all time
and btw, that wiggo pic is so awful |

That was a great review, really. Must've took quite some time to write it all up, I reckon!
The sprinters and the crowd really messed up, but at least the climbers were all there and they made it quite the spectacle! |

Stage 1
The first stage is a circuit race in Xining. All 9 laps, 2 short climbs await, with the first one being the most difficult one as it has a gradient up to 15%.
These hills are a bit too much for our sprinter Jens Mulder who can't stay in a good position. So Wilco Kelderman decides to attack in the last lap at the penultimate hill, and is able to maintain his lead untill the finish, although SpiderTechs Kevin Lacombe comes very close.

Stage 2
The 2nd stage features a long, but easy climb to the Qinghai Lake. A 2-rider breakaway stays out of reach of the peloton, but it is close, very close.... Sergio Mantecón from the Caja Rural-team edges out Farnese Vini's Dimitri Krivtsov for the win. Jens Mulder and Wilco Kelderman wished the stage was 50 metres longer and have to settle with stage 3 and 4.

Stage 3
A short and nearly flat stage of 120 kilometres brings the riders to Bird Island. We try to bring Jens Mulder to the win, and he gets launched perfectly. But he has Argentinian Lucas Sebastián Haedo in his wheel, and the Saxo Bank-rider profts perfectly from it. First season win for him, as well as the GC-lead, and a 2nd place for Mulder.

Stage 4
The 4th stage brings the riders to Xihaizhen. The stage turns out in the 2nd mass sprint and again its LS Haedo who is the fastest. Bert De Backer (Landbouwkrediet) takes the 2nd place and Jens Mulder grabs his third podium place.

Stage 5
The climb 20km before the finish disrupts the sprinters plans, as the BOTD manage to stay out of reacht of the peloton. Colombia's John Darwin Atapuma is the fastest of the 8 riders, beating Thomas Peterson (Saxo Bank) and Thierry Hupond (M&M's). The peloton finishes at '41.

Stage 6
The 6th stage is another circuit race, this time in Qilian. The stage ends in a mass sprint, and there is a good look at the photo finish needed to point out the winner. SpiderTechs Kevin Lacombe edges out Sony Ericsson's Christian Kux by a few centimetres. Assan Bazayev (Astana) takes the 3rd place.

_______________________________________________________________________
Stage 7
170 kilometres await in the 7th stage to Menyuan. And this time, our sprint train works perfectly. Jens Mulder launches his sprint with 1500m to go, and although his legs are hurting like hell in the last few hundred metres due to the lactate, he keeps the lead! It's the first season win for him, and the 2nd in his career!! Bazayev finishes in 2nd and Kux in 3rd.

Stage 8
While some stages are only 120 kilometres, the 8th stage to Lanzhou is twice as long. 240 kilometres, and that is too much for Mulder, as he can't compete for the win. So we decide to let Wilco Kelderman be our man for the sprint, and he does great. Having a better stamina than the other sprinters, he passed LS Haedo just before the finish and takes his 2nd stage win. Because of the 2nd place, Haedo takes over the GC-lead.

Stage 9
The final stage of the Tour of Qinghai Lake is a 94km circuit race in Lanzhou. Kevin Lacombe takes his 2nd stage win, this time with a bigger margin to Christian Kux. LS Haedo finishes in 4th and takes the GC-win.

Maybe a bit late, but I was just reading the summary of the Tour again. And it surprised me that Andy Schleck still has the 17th stage on his name. Didn't he lose the win for that stage?
Anyway, a close GC for Jens Mulder. But he's a great talent! Finally a really good Dutch sprinter again!

Anyway, a close GC for Jens Mulder. But he's a great talent! Finally a really good Dutch sprinter again!
what about Theo Bos
Spoiler and if things go the way I want them: me!
Yes, Theo is also a very good sprinter. But I still don't place him in a list with Cav and Greipel. But maybe (and hopefully) he will!

Yes, he's looking very promising. But don't get too much off-topic.

@ PCM rulezz: Well, he has become one in my saved game, Sp 74
@ Miguel98: He was pretty consistent, but still lacks the Fl and Sta to win more.
@ MrUfo87: the UCI and ASO are pretty slow in changing the results
@ baia: you're not the only one.....
