Stage 18
The queen-stage of this Tour with the finish line at the top of Alpe d'Huez
The stage started and the first climb started right away:
Col de La Madeleine!
Distance: 23.5km
Average slope: 6.5%
The pace was relentless from the begining only allowing some riders to be in the yellow jersey group at the first summit
Next climb:
Col de La Croix de Fer
26.2km
7.2%
Raced slower but Kloden wasn't going to see his team mates before the finish...
And another leg-breaking hurdle:
Col du Télégraphe
13km
7.1%
At this point an attack from S.Joly was seen. He was on his way to become the hero of the stage staying a lot of time isolated up front!
The highest point of the day:
Col du Galibier
19.6km
6.9%
Leipheimer and Cobo attacked in the downhill but were soon caught
Meanwhile a front group with Rodriguez, Efimkin, Popovych, Moncoutié and Antón was the first to face the beast!
21 curves of pure emotion and suffering
Alpe d'Huez
12.8km
9.1%
Just a while later the yellow jersey group led by Astana
Menchov was the 1st to risk something!!
A.Schelck and Juanma Garate went with him catching the breakaway!
Kreuziger and Karpets made their move too
As well as the colombian champion
Everyone tried to grasp onto their own pace with attacks happening with an impressive frequency... Kloden wasnt looking too good
However he was able to hold in the tail of the main final group!
The final km was reached but the group was still almost intact!
But as the sprint started the differences began to grow.. Evans was looking very well!
And the aussie champion did it!! He took the 1st prize at the top of the TdF! Too bad for him that Contador didnt vacilate for an inch... Menchov took a very good 2nd place in front of the yellow jersey!
Karpets and Gárate were the next to finish
Then Kreuziger, Leipheimer and Cobo...
And only then Kloden's group... L'Alpe d'Huez wasn't as mythic as we'd expect...

Too bad, but well done with top 10.
And what a stage. B)
Also, led is better than "leaded" |

Stage 19
Decisive mounatainous TT
Pereiro was the first top10 to set off
Efimkin was the second
then Karpets
...and only then it was Kloden's time!
Sastre was on the road as well
at the 1st checkpoint good news: Kloden was 2nd 5'' slower then Anton and 3'' faster than Karpets!
Leipheimer
Evans
A.Schleck
D.Menchov
and finally Contador... by this time Kloden's 1st time was already banalized with a loss of around 30''- 40'' to the leader Contador!
At the 2nd checkpoint Kloden was losing 1min to Sastre at his passage! Eventually he was caught later...
Sastre finished ahead of the german champion with a devastating gap!
At his arrival Kloden was 16th losing 2'30 to Sastre with 5 riders yet to finish...
However this stage's climax hadn't arived yet! Contador and Menchov sprinting at the end of the summit like mad dogs!! Incredible! Contador won the challenge... and the stage as well...

Yeah that stage sucked...
Well there's still one final climbing test before the Champs Elysées and it doesn't end in a top just as Kloden likes
And there's still a good chance to grab the 7th place!

Stage 20
Last chance to create gaps before the Champs Elysèes
A lot of crushed legs later, the peloton was about to face the last climb of the Tour!
Cobo who didn't feel any pain at all decided to kiss everyone a goodbye!
But Contador who didnt fancy that move went to splinter is compatriot's hopes!
Behind them Menchov, Evans and A.Schleck made a simultaneous move! That way they could chit-chat a bit while attacking...
Meanwhile more people started to leave the peloton: Efimkin, Kreuziger, Garate, Rogers and Kloden!
then an interesting group formed up front!
However the diferences were too slim at the summit...
Which led to a "packed bunch"!
But once more Kloden was there to show everyone he had become much better in downhill than uphill racing, by launching another offensive!!
Only his shadow to beat now...
And there it is!! That's an hattrick for Kloden!! No podiium and no top5 but that must impress our sponsors!

Stage 21
Ohhhhh Champs Elysèeeeeess
At last after 20 days of intense racing the final 168 riders head to the Champs Elysèes
Contador and Wegmann being the most successfull riders in this years Tour were the ones who most enjoyed the ride today
And after 3 weeks... Paris!
...and the Champs Elysèes!
The urban circuit was completed several times until the last lap when Team Columbia started stretching the pack
But there were no trains visible!! Where the hell was Petacchi and Ciolek and Wegmann??
With only 2.5km to the finish Flecha was able to place Petacchi in a reasonable position yet a bit far from the front!
However as the sprint started nobody was able to stop the italian bullet
And so the Tour ends with a nice victory of Alessandro Petacchi in a solo sprint!
in 2nd place.. there's a rider in white.. it's... it's WHO?! FRANK SCHLECK 2nd IN THE CHAMPS ELYSEES?!?!?
I must say by the time this happened the radars in the worldwide world stoped working correctly and we all know what happened to a certain plain...
Stage
1 Alessandro Petacchi Rabobank 2h52'17
2 Fränk Schleck Team CSC Saxo Bank s.t.
3 Jurgen Van den Broeck Silence - Lotto s.t.
4 Bobbie Traksel Lampre s.t.
5 Patrice Halgand Team CSC Saxo Bank s.t.
6 Simon Spilak Lampre s.t.
7 Alberto Contador Astana Cycling Team s.t.
8 Laurens Ten Dam Rabobank s.t.
9 Linus Gerdemann Team Columbia s.t.
10 Ryder Hesjedal Team Garmin - Chipotle powered by H30 s.t.
So the podium ceremony begins
Wegmann takes the "Vert" uncontested
1 Fabian Wegmann Team CSC Saxo Bank 269
2 Alessandro Petacchi Rabobank 230
3 Alberto Contador Astana Cycling Team 204
4 André Greipel Team Columbia 173
5 Enrico Gasparotto Barloworld 166
6 Greg Van Avermaet Silence - Lotto 165
7 Danilo Napolitano Lampre 150
8 Andreas Klöden LA - MSS - Póvoa de VarzÃm 149
9 Cadel Evans Silence - Lotto 140
10 Aaron Kemps Astana Cycling Team 136
Efimkin takes the Polka Dot after some really tough work in the mountains!
1 Vladimir Efimkin AG2R La Mondiale 153
2 Levi Leipheimer LPR Brakes - Ballan 137
3 Alberto Contador Astana Cycling Team 132
4 Andy Schleck Team CSC Saxo Bank 118

7 Gorazd Stangelj Lampre 105
8 Ivan Santaromita Liquigas 103
9 Cadel Evans Silence - Lotto 92
10 Denis Menchov Rabobank 91
Andy Schleck wins the Maillot Blanc without actual competition
CSC Saxobank wins the Team competition
At last the yellow jersey goes to... *suspense*... *sound of drums*.... tcharaaamm The All-Mighty Alberto Contador!!!
1 Alberto Contador Astana Cycling Team 85h38'08
2 Denis Menchov Rabobank + 5'00
3 Andy Schleck Team CSC Saxo Bank + 7'00
4 Cadel Evans Silence - Lotto + 7'39
5 Levi Leipheimer LPR Brakes - Ballan + 9'49
6 Carlos Sastre Team CSC Saxo Bank + 10'15
7 Vladimir Karpets Caisse d'Epargne + 12'14
8 Andreas Klöden LA - MSS - Póvoa de VarzÃm + 12'44
9 Vladimir Efimkin AG2R La Mondiale + 13'49
10 Óscar Pereiro Caisse d'Epargne + 14'52
In the end I think we can call this a very good Tour for us! As it's our first time we should be more than satisfied with 3 stage victories and an 8th spot overall! I just keep asking myself what could we have done if 'the teddy bear incident' didnt' hapen...
Screw it! What really matters is that our sponsors are happy with our performance:
Now the countdown for the season peak (Volta a Portugal) begins!!

Nice TdF, just waiting for the Vuelta, but you do have one mistake, you wrote Frank instead of Andy on the screenshot of the second place on the stage
Anyway good luck in the next sponsor race. Volta a Portugal isn`t it ? |

thanks olabj
it isn't a mistake really. Frank is also riding in white because he is the ProTour leader!
Volta a Portugal it is. We'll be there to defend our overall victory last year but at this moment I still haven't decided who'll be the leader there...

it's one good option yes but I think I'll save him for other races. I still have ENECO Tour, Vuelta, Deutschland Tour, Poland Tour among many one-day races to race.
I was thinking in giving a chance to a portuguese rider but if the field is stronger than last year I won't stand a chance...
Anyway Tiago Machado is on the pole position to be the leader there
MON 74 TT 74 but he's peaking in the week of Volta a Portugal.
