Few riders are peaking in Lombardia, as some top riders have already finished their season then, some other ones have peaked for the worlds two or three weeks earlier.
If you're good enough at smaller mountains, and have a good condition in Lombardia, you can get a good result there. I wouldn't be more shocked than that to see Cancellara win it once in his life.

Am I the only one who laughed when he mentioned Lombardia?
I didn't manage to laugh as much as when I was told he had dropped Valverde and other favourites in the Tourmalet during this year Tour de France. That was until I had to admit that was true.

That was Voigt, no? Cancellara was in the break that day?

I thought he was there too, but I only caught the coverage in the descent, so I may be wrong.

Indeed it was Voigt. Cancellara was in the break and stopped on the descent so he could drop back and help.

Bettini wasn't quite the most accomplished climber, and yet he won the Giro di Lombardia twice, so why not Cancellara? In a tactical race, I can see him winning it.

You're talking about a guy who was 7th in the Giro as a neo-pro before deciding to specialize in something other than climbing...

Cancellara will never win a Grand Tour! He is to heavy to ever do it....Pfft

Indurain is a little taller than Cancellara, so it is not entirely impossible if he loses som weight.

But Bettini won his two Giro di Lombardia long after he specialised as a puncheur. Three years ago, Bettini, as a rule of thumb, would really struggle above the 500ms climb range.

It can be argued that one needed only to look at Bettini's and Cancellara's build in order to conclude that Bettini had by far the most potential to become a successful climber. But that's not the point. Cancellara is not in the same league as Cunego or Valverde, but it's very unlikely he'll face stern competition; what is more, Cancellara has a powerful team to back him up. Should CSC be able to protect him until the Madonna del Ghisallo, I believe Cancellara can tackle the Civiglio and the San Fermo and then burst through in the final kms to win the classic.
An aggressive, trigger-happy race is the only situation in which Cancellara would be clearly in a disadvantage. A rarity in recent years...

That's not entirely true, the first part, the point was, Bettini was normally already saturated at the end of the season, and thus out of shape in Lombardia... Wink He always did well in Zürich which DID have those 500m climbs.

At the end of his career, he had bad pre-seasons and focused on the end of the year, and won Lombardia...

So I quite disagree

What I'm debating is the part where you talked about Bettini's climbing skills. Just because he hardly ever wasted energy on mountain stages doesn't mean he wasn't good at them Wink

But about Lombardia then, when was the last time a climber won Lombardia? It's all classics riders who win it.

mesq
Well, I have to disagree there Wink
It's true that Bettini could have become an outstanding climber, but I think the riding style he developed throughout his career wasn't suited at all to the long climbs, and so his climbing range couldn't go much further than elevations like the Ghisallo or the Pfannenstiel.
Bettini may have been physically prepared for longer climbs, but I feel that, on the psychological side, he never tuned himself for them.

Giro d'Italia to start in Venice

The 100th Giro d'Italia will make its start in Venice with a team time trial, the city's mayor announced Thursday. The stage in the popular tourist destination in Northeast Italy will suit seven-time Tour de France winner Lance Armstrong, who announced he will race the three-week tour from May 9-31.

The stage will be a 21-kilometre team time trial on Venice lido (the beach that separates mainland Venice from the Adriatic Sea). The stage will be fast with only five turns along the parcours that shots straight down Lungomare D'Annunzio and Marconi before a U-turn and the parallel run on Via Alberoni, Malamocco and Sandro Gallo back towards the starting point.

"The presence of the Corsa Rosa is of huge importance to Venice, which has a great opportunity to offer Italy and the world something unusual, vital and lively, fundamentally different than the city's normal image," said Massimo Cacciari to La Gazzetta dello Sport.

The race's organiser, RCS Sport, will announce the full Giro d'Italia parcours in December. It is planning many surprises, which could include a city other than Milan for the final stage. Mountain stages always highlight the race and Austria could host the first days in altitude following the opening day in Venice.

Alberto Contador, winner of the 2007 Giro d'Italia, confirmed this week that he would not defend his title. He will focus on winning the Tour de France a second time after his 2007 victory.

For one there's a thread for race routes for 2009, and for another thing, the route was leaked last monday already Smile

I love how cyclingnews are always completely oblivious to so many news, especially leaked routes...
