After being first at the first two summits of the day, Bennett attacked the rest of the breakaway group on the first category climb. Only Nicola Conci was able to follow him to the top of the climb
The two collaborated really well after than in an attempt to keep the rest of the breakaway and a very hungry pack at bay. But they ended up being caught by three other escapees just as they reached a cobbled section: Brambilla, Conti and Howson.
Both of the former leaders would end up on the stage podium, but neither would take the win, with Gianluca Brambilla having the freshest legs and being able to produce the fastest sprint to the finish line

Shame about losing so much time on the day.
I have to say, I think its very interesting that basically the exact same riders are near the top of the GC in your Giro, as in my Giro. Swap Bernal for Lopez and get rid of Froome and I think its exactly the same.

Bad luck Kruijswijk did't take the pink jersey. Overall a good carriere, with a lot of wins and realistic results.

Thank you. Great to see a new reader!
I'd say the amount of wins this year is a bit high in terms of realism and like Tamijo suggested, I'm considering upping the difficulty at the end of this season.
valv, I think Froome got rid of himself

The two main riders of the latest editions are riding the Giro this year, so it's a good opportunity for those who have been defeated in the past to finally put their name on the Californian crown.
Alaphilippe looked to be the strongest rider in the uphill finishes, but without being able to drop Kwiatkowski, everything was decided in the time - trial, where the Pole had the upper hand. A second race this year lost in a time - trial by Alaphilippe after the same thing happened to him in the Basque Country.

| | | | | | | A. Yates | | C. Ewan | | G. Bennett | | D. Martinez |
Bennett was not as strong as the Bora duo of Majka and Formolo today and missed out on the opportunity put summits suchas as Gavia and or Stelvio on his list of climbs conquered
The climbs throughout the day were so brutal that it didn't need many accelerations on the last climb to see the pack blowing up. Oomen was the first attacker and he soon joined Formolo, with Majka still up ahead. The pink jersey, Adam Yates was not far behind the Dutch rider. Pinot and Nibali are with him
A great day for Majka who takes the stage win and also makes a huge jump in the GC up to sixth. He also moves into second place in the KoM classification, but more than 100 points behind Bennett
Behind him, Oomen had dropped Formolo, but was caught by Yates and Pinot inside the last kilometre, with the pink jersey sprinting away to gain a few bonus seconds on them to increase his lead

Two important abandons as a result of a crash on the downhill from the first category climb: Eduard Grosu and Chris Froome. This is bad news for Van Poppel who is left without his main lead-out rider and Pinot who is left without his main mountain domestique
Today was a day for the breakaway and Diego Ulissi got the better of his breakaway companions on a punchy final to take an important stage win for Bahrain in a race which Simon Yates has struggled to bring the team at the top
A split in the pack on that tricky finale saw some of the lower GC riders losing about 30 seconds to the main group. The main victims? yesterday's performers: Majka and Formolo

Yeah, it definitely looks good at the moment especially since the others seem to be turning up only in the big mountain stages. Like the Bora duo did. But first place on a HC category in Giro gives more than 40 points so even though it's a big lead it's not as comfortable as it looks.

The pack had a very strong comeback today but it was too late to stop a consecutive success from the breakaway. Ulissi attacked his breakaway companions on the last climb and held off the chasers to have more time to enjoy the win as claim a second one a row

There was mass crash in the pack after the start as a result of which last year's white jersey winner, Daniel Felipe Martinez was forced to abandon the race. With that crash and very few kilometres on today's route, the pack did not allow any breakaway to be formed
This allowed George Bennett to add some more points to his tally but also find out who could be his main contender for the jersey as Davide Formolo managed to gain 1 point more than him today. It will be difficult for Formolo as well as for his team mate, Rafal Majka as they are very well place in the GC and it's unlikely Ineos will allow them to join breakaways at this point
Sam Oomen was once again on the attack as we reached the last climb of the day, but the slopes were not steep enough to produce any gaps between the favorites. The fastest in the last kilometre proved to Adam Yates who finally took a victory to add to his many race days already spent in pink

Steven Kruijswijk doing fine here with a top 5 in sight, but a long way up to a podium.

Despite being 8th in the GC, Formolo was allowed to go in the breakaway today. But surprisingly he did not contest for the KoM points, which means the jersey will virtually be Bennett's by the end of the stage
Drama at the back of the race. The leader of another classification (with quite a comfortable lead also despite not as clear as Bennett's) Caleb Ewan crashed and was forced to the abandon the race on the second downhill of the day
Even though some riders in the breakaway were quite well placed in the GC, the pack was not interested at all in catching the breakaway. On the last first category climb of the day we also found out the reason why Formolo wasn't contesting the KoM points as he didn't even make the initial cut when the breakaway broke apart on the climb.
Ciccone set up a very hard pace in the group in the last 5 kilometres of the climb and only Bennett and Bob Jungels were able to follow the Italia to the top
Jungels would then get dropped on the last climb of the day by the other two, only to make it back up on the downhill and take the stage win in the sprint. Another second place finish for Bennett, but his efforts are awarded with a move in the top 10 of the GC, while Ciccone climbs up to 6th, right behind Kruijswijk

Nice to see Jungels win a Giro stage! Looks like Bennett can relax for the KOM now, and maybe challenge for a GC place now.

Yes, he will be riding for the GC now. The plan for him included going for the blue jersey and help Kruijswijk were he can, but right now I'm not sure if he still should be protecting Kruijswijk or be the other way around since Bennett's daily form has been better than Kruijswijk's lately.
With a big tt still coming up though and this potentially being one of last opportunities for Steven going for the GC in a Grand Tour, I think I'm going to stick with him as a leader

The sprinters are not making themselves any favors in their fight with the GC riders for the purple jersey. Another bad timed chase today and another stage goes to the breakaway as this time it's Petit who claims the stage win

Earlier, Ulissi had back to back victories after successful breakaways. Today it was Petit's turn to do that. And just like Ulissi he got more time to celebrate his second as he got a gap to his fellow escapees at the end.

A stage with plenty of climbing but not anything major proved to be another perfect stage for a breakaway success. Jungels took his second stage win of the race, but this time it was a solo one. Jungels really is doing a massive job here for Deceuninck with Dumoulin, Ackermann and Roglic all being major disappointments so far.
The main general classification favorites finished together today, except for Davide Formolo, who lost about 12 minutes today. The Italian looked set for a great Giro after helping Majka take his stage win, but it all went to shambles quite quickly

My my you are shooting those post like a machine gun, hard to keep up. Still fine GC with two in top 10 and Steven seems strong enough to possibly move higher.
