15/5-17/5 2016 Vuelta a Castilla y Leon 2.1
17/5 Stage 3/3 Aguilar de Campoo – Cervera de Pisuerga
187.3 km
Astana would like to get someone in the breakaway, but don’t succeed with neither Rosa nor Vanotti, it stead we get a breakaway with 5 riders.
The front group is later extended to 7 riders. The strongest in the group is David De la Cruz (Quick Step), Sergio Pardilla Bellon (Caja Rural) and Adrián González Velasco (Euskadi Basque), and they share most of the KoM points today.
With Fuglsang as one of the favorites, Astana is sharing some of the workload especially early on the stage with Rosa and Vanotti.
With 84 km to the line, bad luck strikes Astana again, Fuglsang is down and even though he gets back in the saddle he is badly hurt and no longer competitive. Everything is now up to Lars Boom
Rosa have done a lot of work for the team today, with 34 km left and just 14 to the top of Alto de la Varga he is on his way to deliver the last bottles to Boom and Grivko, sitting together close to the front of the peloton.
At this point what is left of the breakaway still has 43”
On Alto de la Varga the breakaway is over, Pello Bilbao (Caja Rural) attack over the top but do not get away.
But on the last short uncategorized hill before the uphill finish, with just 4 km left Esteban Cháves attack Lars Boom and Alexis Vuillermoz counters and gets contact. They open a small gap to the peloton of 32 riders.
The peloton gets back and it all ends in a reduced sprint, this time Boom is not strong enough against the other race favorites falling back on the steep slope.
Alexis Vuillermoz wins in Aguilar de Campoo over Jesús Herrada they got 19 sec. to Pello Bilbao taking the last podium.
Evaluation:
Overall:
26 years old French Alexis Vuillermoz wins the stage as well as the overall race, these was his first wins of the season. His latest win was a stage in Tour du Gévaudan Languedoc-Roussillon in September.
The most disappointed team must be Unieuro – Wilier, with their race favorite Mauro Finetto ending as 25 overall, all the other favorite teams got a rider in top 10 GC.
Astana:
Not the worst result, but with two strong options Boom’s 8 is not great.
With all the crashes hitting Astana they just don’t need an injured Fuglsang.

Astana
In the Giro:
As we have already seen Vincenzo Nibali is completely over the problems he had after his crash.
Also Fabio Aru seems to be close to top health after the crash
Dario Cataldo is still in agony from the crash he had, he is truely needed so he will continue but he is far from at his best.
Curently not racing
Jakob Fuglsang is not officially injured, but he got some minor damages in Castilla y Leon and will not start in Baloise Belgium Tour.
Long term injuries
Matvey Nikitin is suffering from a damage in the elbow region, hard to say at this point when we will be fit to race, doctors say some 3-5 weeks.
Eros Capecchi is having problems with his knee, expected to be about 5-6 weeks before he can race again
Laurens De Vreese haven’t raced since Dwars door Vlaanderen in late march, but his knee are now slowly getting better, he has started light training and will be back in about 3 weeks.
Some riders with long term injuries from other teams
Edvald Boasson Hagen Team Dimension Data for Qhubeka (1 month)
Romain Bardet Ag2r La Mondiale (2.5 month)
Matthias Brändle IAM Cycling (1 month)
Louis Meintjes Lampre-Merida (2 month)
AND THE STORY WILL BE
ABOUT 1 WEEK – a short (sunny) trip to Barcelona

6/5-28/5 2016 Giro d'Italia
18/5 Stage 12/21 Noale – Bibione 179.4 km
We have a sunny day, and even with the wind straight in the face, won’t matter much with wind speed’s under 10 km/h.
The morning breakaway takes off with much fighting, it is 6 riders all way back in the GC.
Walscheid (Giant), Draperi (Southeast), Fraile (Dimension), Viola (Nippo), Ladagnous (FDJ) and Leezer (LottoNL).
The break reach a maximum distance of 6’45 with about 120 km to the line, from here Lampre-Merida starts the chase with a bit of help from Quick Step’s Nikolas Maes.
Not much to say about the next 90 km Viola wins the sprint in Ormelle and again in Portogruaro both in front of Leezer. With 30 km to go the pace in the peloton is 52-54 km/h and the distance is down to 1’40, seems to be heading for a mass sprint finish.
But the last 10 km inside Bibione town, are full of dangerous curves with very little straight road in between, the peloton suddenly has a hard time keeping up the pace, not to mention setting up decent trains.
With just 4 km to the line the breakaway led by Leezer still got a minute on the front of the peloton, at the same time we get a huge crash splitting the peloton, just 28 riders continues undisturbed. Michele Scarponi is down.
In the last curve with under 100 meter left Tom Leezer is still leading in front of Matthieu Ladagnous, behind them Marcel Kittel is coming fast, at least 10 meters in front of the other sprinters.
Tom Leezer take a surprise breakaway win in Bibione just centimeters in front of Marcel Kittel, Matthieu Ladagnous 3rd.
Evaluation:
Overall:
With his third win of the season also taking two breakaway wins in Tour Down Under, 30 years old Dutch Tom Leezer is clearly having his best season, after a long career of only minor results.
Again we see a stage on paper very easy, could well influence the final GC, only 39 riders made it to the line in the same time.
GC riders losing time:
4 | Mikel Landa Meana | Team Sky | +02:27 | 6 | Roman Kreuziger | Tinkoff | +02:27 | 8 | Riccardo Zoidl | Trek - Segafredo | +01:36 | 9 | Gianluca Brambilla | Etixx - Quick Step | +01:36 | 11 | Jarlinson Pantano Gomez | IAM Cycling | +02:27 | 12 | Alexandre Geniez | FDJ | +02:27 | 13 | Beñat Intxausti Elorriaga | Team Sky | +02:27 | 15 | Domenico Pozzovivo | Ag2r La Mondiale | +02:27 | 16 | Fabio Felline | Trek - Segafredo | +02:27 | 18 | Bart De Clercq | Lotto Soudal | +02:27 | 19 | Bob Jungels | Etixx - Quick Step | +01:36 | 20 | Mathias Frank | IAM Cycling | +02:27 |
Astana:
Andrea Guardini got an acceptable 7th
More importantly neither Nibali nor López lost time, both advancing a little.

6/5-28/5 2016 Giro d'Italia
19/5 Stage 13/21 Palmanova - Cividale del Friuli 167.2 km
Scarponi woke up feeling fine, clearly stated he would be fit to sit with Nibali up to the decisive climbs. There was a little debate if Aru should attack early, but it was decided than he’d better stay close to Nibali, Miguel López got the free role, could he gain time in the fight for youth with an early attack ?
A nice day, sunny with nice tempratures and just a light to gentle breeze.
We get a large morning break, but Miguel López doesn’t make it. Pre-stage favorite Warren Barguil (Giant) sits in the breakaway, other strong riders Nordhaug (Sky), Trofimov (Tinkoff) and Pirazzi (Bardiani) also sits in the break.
We have a crash after 50 km, Zeits is down with Greipel and Guadin they get back, hard to say how bad is was. López attempts an attack from the bottom of Monte Maggiore but BMC is ready and close it quickly.
With 1 km to the top López attacks again, this time it is hard on the BCM train, he passes the top with 47 sec. to the peloton. The breakaway is about 2 minutes further ahead.
The peloton mostly BMC is fighting hard to close on the descent, but on Crai climb with its hard gradients at the beginning López attacks again, now getting contact with the rear end of the breakaway.
This time there is no more energy left in BMC and the rest of the peloton to keep up the insane pace, the pace is still high and most of the breakaway riders falling back, but Nordhaug and Barguil in front and Trofimov, Txurruka and López just 24” back, build a lead of 4’10 on the climb.
On the downhill and the flat the peloton closes some of the distance, while the front groups merge into one group of five. When they start Cima Porzus the distance is 3’26 to a peloton of 42 riders.
The pace set by Barguil is too much for Trofimov and Txurruka they lose 2’20 very fast, with 2 km to the top Barguil attacks trying to get rid of Nordhaug and López.
Even if it may seem hard on a strong López. Nibali has to attack on this climb, it is essential to gain time on everybody, if he aims for a podium, to open the favourite group Aru makes a hard acceleration with Nibali clued.
Porte is strong closing swiftly, and attacks over the top getting a gap of 20”, but Nibali is faster on the downhill and makes contact at the bottom of the Valle climb. Porte is looking boiled and with a short hard attack Nibali opens a small gap.
Up front López and Barguil has lost Nordhaug now hanging 25-30 sec after.
From behind Nibali is closing in and passing Nordhaug, who just can hold his wheel. Under the 5km mark Nibali gets contact with teammate López and Barguil, Porte is more than a minute after.
The Astana rider is setting the highest possible pace they can without exploding, making it easy for Warren Barguil to snap the victory in Cividale del Friuli.
Evaluation:
Overall:
This was the 3rd season stage win by 24 years old French Warren Barguil, after the also won a stage in Tour de Romandie in late April, and one in Sarthe - Pays de la Loire in early April. Surely we haven’t seen the best of this young rider yet, but it this Giro he will not shine in the GC already 1h22'40” behind Porte.
Besides Kelderman who has been riding with injury for many stages constantly losing time, the most disappointed rider must be Adam Yates coming in as 15th losing 5’56” and the youth jersey to López
The most surprising result must be López making it to the a podium against much stronger rider and also Nordhaug did very well.
Astana:
Astana got much more than expected, taking substantial time on every GC rider moving Nibali up to podium positon and at the same time advancing López to 7th and white jersey holder.
Also Aru showed great form, first delivering Nibali in a good position, and later getting a top 10 for himself.
Zeits got some heavy bruising, he can race tomorrow but he will not be in perfect shape.
