Giro d’Italia – Stage 20

An awesome day and an awesome finale for has been the best race of my career no doubt. This no doubt tops my Silver Medal at the Worlds and my win in Tour of Lombardy, eventhough those are still huge.

Everyone in the pack was just so relaxed right from the outset, kidding around and stuff. I have these parade stages a lot of times on the telly and now I’m one of the riders who has fought through three gruelling weeks of pain and steep climbs. But the outcome has been beyond everything I imagined. I would have said that too if I just had one stage win, but I ended up with two and I just can’t put words on that. I have worked so hard to win a race during the entire and then it just melts together in harmony on two occasions for me, here in Italy.

The CSC car was handing out champagne and since I’m Danish I managed to talk my way to a round for my team. Also I had my picture taken with Basso (Maglia Rosa), Nibali (Maglia Bianca) and Soler (2nd in Maglia Verde to Basso), which was a big experience for me, to be one of the riders who had set their print on the race.

Traditionally the race came together for a mass sprint, and me still feeling strong lead out Greipel as I had pulled into the lead almost creating a small gap on the pack. Greipel lost my wheel though as he was down in 4th position at the start of the sprint.

Leading out the final sprint of the Giro with Napolitano, Cucinotta and Greipel in my wheel.

I put in a good effort but Greipel’s position wasn’t optimal to pull off a result and Cucinotta, who has been by far the strongest sprinter in the last week took a convincing win with Greipel in 2nd and me in 4th.

Nevertheless a good conclusion to a good race for us. We’d hoped to have Siutsou in the Top 5, but his crash put a stop to that. He met up with us in Milan that evening as we celebrated the Giro being over. It has been a fantastic race. I’ve never felt anymore exhausted though and after a long spring I’m now off for a well-deserved break and I’m actually not sure when I will be back in the saddle this season. In a few months I reckon. I didn’t want to think about it though as this evening was just dedicated celebrate the end of the Giro.

Jonas’ Corner

My break after the Giro wasn’t as relaxing as I would have liked to be. Because of my two stage wins there has arised a big attention around me and I agreed in doing quite a lot of interviews for some cycling magazines and also for some Danish TV Stations, as I have become quite the icon back home.

Anyway I got to do some relaxing, but you never relax totally. You have to train every day, but I had some nice workouts with Thomas Løvkvist, who lives close to me in Italy. Also I spend my break signing a new contract with High Road so it won’t expire until 2012. Another step in the right direction for me. I have been thinking about which races I want to do peak for in the remainder of the season. The route at the Worlds this year is too easy, so I won’t come there with winning ambitions. I’m very fatigue after the Giro and I probably won’t reach the same level I was at during the three weeks in Italy again this season, but I will try my best to peak for Giro di Lombardia to try and defend my title there.

The field of hosts for next season’s World Championships has been narrowed down to three and I think it sounds promising. The candidates are Valkenburg (Holland), Berlin (Germany) and Cagliari (Italy). I don’t hope it will be in Berlin because I don’t think the route will be hilly enough there for me to win. Valkenburg sounds like a perfect fit though with the Cauberg hill being the place to make a difference and I have my fingers crossed for Holland on this one.

I think completing my first Grand Tour has given me the experience needed to compete for the win in the Ardennes now.

Danish National Championships

This is my first race since the Giro, well I also took part in the ITT Championships, but a no-show would have gained almost as good as a result as I came away with there. I did do some very good time trials at the Giro but with my form way off right now I don’t even think I can defend my Danish Championship Jersey

Again this year the leading teams were CSC, GLS and Designa, so me and Lars had to work out some way to get our hands on that jersey. We tried to get in the early break, but it didn’t work out so we were stuck in the pack praying Designa would pick up the pace at some point with no riders in the breakaway group, which consisted of Klostergaard (CSC), Reckweg (GLS), Vinther (Cycle Collstrop), Heine Møller (P3Transfer) and the 2008 Champion, Ricky Jørgensen (Fercase).

They had a gap of over 6 minutes when Nicki Sørensen (Differdange) attacked with 56 kilometres to go, after me and Lars had put in some work to cut the deficit back. This made GLS and CSC pick up the pace and we now started gaining on the breakaway riders. It seemed like Sørensen would easily be caught, but he kept his pace high eventhough the gap at one point was cut to just 30 seconds.

In an indredible effort Sørensen rode his way up to the breakaway riders, who were split up, with Vinther leading the race and it looked as though he would win it if he could keep just a reasonable pace. But he ran out of energy as Sørensen first made contact with Ricky Jørgensen just to drop him in an instance. In a matter of minutes had caught up with Vinther, and he was leading the pack with about 40 seconds coming into the finale.

Sørensen fighting to hold off the pack having dropped Vinther on the very same hill where I founded my win last year.

GLS were sitting up the sprint for Mørkøv in the pack and I jumped right on my former team-mate’s wheel, looking to take this in the sprint as we were gaining dramatically on Sørensen up the road. But in the final right-hander I lost control of my bike and crashed out of contention. I hit the deck pretty hard but managed to get on my bike and roll in.

But up the road Sørensen was keeping it going and with an amazing effort he held off Mørkøv and the other sprinters to take a fantastic victory.

I had to congratulate Nicki afterwards because I have never seen anything quite like it. I was a bit dissapointed but I have had a great year in the jersey and I will for sure win it back some other time.

Sachsen Tour

My preparations for the final part of the season starts in Germany at the Sachsen Tour. There are few stages that suits me quite well, but first of all this is just about getting some kilometres into my legs, because I feel very rusty right now, even after racing the Danish Championships. My tough programme in the spring surely cost me a lot of fatigue which I’m paying for right now. I’m more tired than I have ever been this time a year.

Anyway about the racing our captains for this race were our young guns and future Tour prospects Diego Ulissi and Nico Keinath. I’m might try something in a bunch sprint, but I don’t really count on it.

i285.photobucket.com/albums/ll76/A_Schleck/PCM0001-45.jpg
Back in the vanilla High Road jersey after a year in red and white.

The first was won by Gaudin, who I beat on my way to my first stage win in the Giro, so I actually quite pleased to see him win. He and Harbig of Thüringer Energie Team just managed to hold off the pack as the Frenchman was triumphant in the sprint of those two guys. I just rolled in with the pack today.

i285.photobucket.com/albums/ll76/A_Schleck/PCM0003-46.jpg

Next stage actually came down to a bunch sprint, but too tired at the end to do anything I just stayed in the middle of the pack, not really interested in putting in any effort. At the end, Eric Baumann of Team Sparkasse was the first rider to cross the line giving the German fans something to cheer about. As we don’t have any sprinters here except me, we had a pretty quiet day.

3 Assan Bazayev Team Astana s.t.
4 René Weissinger Team Volksbank s.t.
5 Matti Breschel Team CSC s.t.
52 Jonas Aaen Jørgensen Team High Road s.t.

The third stage was relatively hilly with a big hill some 40 kilometres from the finish. I got over it alongside Keinath and Ulissi, but I had to fight a lot to hang in there, as it’s now more or less confirmed that my legs are pretty rubbish right now.

As we got over the climb and I fought my way back to the front of the pack something unfortuneatel happened. Without any contact or anything and I still have no idea why, I crashed. Luckily I was sitting in the left side of the pack so all the riders managed to dodge me. Me on the other hand wasn’t feeling too terrific. I tried to get back up on my bike, but no way. I couldn’t go on. Even with just 5 kilometres to the line I simply couldn’t not make the pedals go around. So when Piva, our directeur sportif in this race, pulled over the car to check on me, we make a decision that I would abandon the race. So I did.

i285.photobucket.com/albums/ll76/A_Schleck/PCM0005-44.jpg

Rohregger won the stage for those interested. Ulissi in 2nd.

3 Mitja Mahoric Team Volksbank s.t.
4 Assan Bazayev Team Astana s.t.
5 Der Zolt ELK Haus - Simplon s.t.

I went to the hospital with Piva immediately after, where I was diagnosed with a fracture. For some reason they couldn’t tell me what kind of fracture. Only that it was in fact, a fracture. This means that I will be out until mid-august, which is like three weeks. I will miss out on Clasica San Sebastian, which I was looking forward to racing for the first time. But those things happen. I hope it doesn’t disrupt my training and make me completely in capable of building up my form for Giro di Lombardia.

i285.photobucket.com/albums/ll76/A_Schleck/skadet.jpg

Mitja Mahoric ended up winning Sachsen Tour ahead of Cancellara and my Giro breakaway companion, Damien Gaudin. Ulissi was our best rider in 6th place. Klier was 19th and Keinath 22nd.
