Race Report : Tour du Haut Var

Stage 02

Today was a weird stage. Our strategy was to be in the breakaway but we end up as three of the same team in a breakaway of five. They were Bob Jungels, Tony Gallopin and me.

Of course when we realized was not interseted by us , I started to ride fast to bring my team mates as far as possible. And when there was 40 km left I let them go, I was too tired.

The pack was reaaly not interested in us and they only caught me when there was 25 km left. (the breakaway was 5km in front of us)

Bob and Tony were there for the GC and not for the stage but as the other did not make a lot to make this breakaway real, they did not offered them the win.

Cyril Lemoine (GDE) won the sprint, Bob ended 2nd and Tony 4th.

Pre-Race:

I'm quite nervous about this race because I have to get a good result but I also have to help Fabian to get a better one.

Race Report:

Contrary to the past two year, where we (Europcar) were not chasing, we had to control the breakaway to bring Fabian in the best condition toward the finish. Danilo Hondo led the pack during the first half of the race.

Then when there was 40 km left, Maarten Wynants accelerated and he easily caught the breakaway, now that we had someone at front we let the other team controlling the pace.

When we entered the last cobbled section, the front part of the pack accelerated, I ended up in a group of 7 riders but no-one was really implicated. I was to tired because of the first km and when the pack caught us I simply let go.

With 20 km left Tom Boonen accelerated, Fabian made the work to bring him back.

And after that acceleration, there was only 6 riders in the leading group.

They fight for the win and Sep Vanmarcke was the fastest of the 6. Fabian took the second position and Maarten ended 11th.
I arrived more than 12' after Vanmarcke but I took the 24th position.
