Welcome all to the preview of the Paris-Nice! Many think of this and The Italian Tirreno-Adriatico as the season openers. Those riders in italy have already begun their trek from East to West, now it's time for those in France to travel from North to South.
The route this year is limited in TT kilometres, more focus will be placed on those guys who can climb, Especially with a summit finish on the Col du Mont Jalabert on Stage 4.
We start with a 4km prologue. Broadly flat, though the centre of the route is built around a small climb, which peaks at 8. We will be looking at our first Maillot Jaune, however the stage winner will be hard pressed to keep it for long, 3 flatter days with Boni seconds may give a sprinter the lead tomorrow.
A flat day follows the prologue, one which will surely be contested by any sprinters present here in France. At just 187km long, the stage shouldn't be too much of a challenge for the strong men, so expect a well controlled breakaway.
Stage 3 will be sure to throw a cat amongst the pidgeons. The route may not be particularly difficult, though the final 1.8km are all upwards false flat, which may prove enough to throw the sprinters off, and award a daring puncher.
Stage 4 is officially classed as flat, though we may well see a reduced group contesting the finish. 45km from the line comes the 8.5km ascent of the Cote du Fangas. This climb averages just under 5%, with sections up to 10% so if the stage is made hard, the sprinters will struggle to hang on.
166km take the peloton from Maurs to Mende on stage 5. The races only summit finish, 4km at an average of 7.2% The steepest section of the climb comes just under halfway up, so a daring attack could be rewarded today.
Stage 6 weighs in with a hilly 180km par cours. If any day looked good for a breakaway, I would say it was today. The GC men will have contested the uphill sprint on the previous day, so expect the weaker teams to pack todays breakaway.
Stage 7 gives us the races longest climb, just over 10km of continuous uphill riding. The last climb on this tough stage comes 15km from the finish line, so we may see some groups coming back together in that gap, in order to sprint for the line together.
Last but not least by any means, Stage 8 on the southern coast of France. 123km long, including the famous climb of the Col D'Eze. Those riders still in with a shot at the GC will look to today as a last opportunity to attack the lead. Expect some fireworks, especially if some of the GC teams have had a tough day earlier in the week.
So, now we know the route it's time to turn the eyes towards the riders who will be contesting the 2013 edition of the race to the sun...
Several fan favourites are here for the race often considered the true season opener. A mixture of leaders, some teams opting for a sprinter or mixed leadership, some a more all round stage racer, whilst most notably Lierse have gone with an out and out Puncheur to lead the squad.
*****
Name | Hill | Prologue | Flat | Joaquim Rodriguez | 82 | 69 | 69 | Philippe Gilbert | 80 | 76 | 75 | Thomas Voeckler | 79 | 67 | 73 |
The overall race favourite this year is Team Allianz' Joaquim Rodriguez. Purito is an absolutely explosive climber, and favourite for the summit finish. Gilbert has a slight advantage in that he will lose a few seconds less in the Prologue, though will he be able to follow up the climb, which is slightly longer than perhaps he specialises in? Thomas Voeckler comes 3rd in the running, impossible to count out on home territory, will Voecklers home advantage be enough to see him top the podium in Nice...
***
Name | Hill | Prologue | Flat | Peter Sagan | 79 | 76 | 77 | Alejandro Valverde | 79 | 73 | 68 | Edvald Boassen-Hagen | 75 | 79 | 77 |
Peter Sagan, He's not quite as strong uphill as his rivals, but he's just incredible everywhere. He may gain time in the sprints, and his team will be fully focussed on his success following Langkawi. Valverde seems to be better set for a top 5, though a podium definitely isn't out of reach for the spaniard. It'll be interesting to see his teams tactics. Finally Eddy the Boss. He's not quite developed as people had hoped after a very promising start to his career. However after the old WT was restructured, Edvald found himself at the Norwegian outift Haier, where he'll be hoping to rekindle his career.
*
Name | Hill | Prologue | Flat | Sylvain Chavanel | 75 | 79 | 78 | Michael Albasini | 78 | 65 | 70 | Rigoberto Urán Urán | 77 | 69 | 67 |
Finally the outside favourites. A mixture of styles, Chavanel has the home bonus, whilst Albasini and Urán will hope to make use of the slightly less tight marking they will receive in order to cause an upset and bring home the bacon.
Well, thats it folks, the favourites, the route, Join us later for the results of the opening Prologue, and our first glimpses of the riders here in France!

No, absolutely not true.
Johan gave us a load of points at the TDU, and everyone will work for him at the sprint stages here
Mean of Baggie that he didn't mention him in the preview, I agree
@Jaxika Your team is beastly! Probably the most underrated team, that deserves a lot more attention. Shame that we didn't hear about it a lot, because you're not really that active, but well, I understand that you're busy

Markus & Pietropolli are here, both 73 SP, and Pietropolli very valuable for Johan on the hills. I can't think of a lot better leadouts uphill on this startlist. And of ING, only Boeckmans and Boonen are better...
Edit: And Goss & Sagan haven't got better support.

Yes, but SGL doesn't even have 7 non-sprinters, so it makes sense that they take some good sprinters

Indeed.. Sadly im completely screwed, the routes that were randomly selected have basically no flat stages all year, so it's gonna be pretty lean for me this season i think

Now beat that
But yeah, I'm looking forward to this race for a while now
Wait... You also got De Gendt

We'll band together and hold up the end for the sprinters
Nice looking startlist. Most of the stars are in Tirreno opening this race up a lot. Then the lack of a serious TT turns it even more in favor of the agressive. It is a route that should create action which is good.
My money would be on Gilbert over Purito though. Voeckler vs. Chavanel for best french man. Sagan to be the outside GC bet i expect to take a Top5 if not more

You're not really a sprinters team... Well, less than SGL is
And I can see the MO skill being a factor in stage 5(Maybe ratio 0,25/0,75, but still...), and that can give Gilbert problems
