Project 1T4i - Bye, bye!
Schleck96
Good Luck

vangerner
Good luck!

Pellizotti2
@all: Thanks!
@tsmoha: I hope so too. I've always liked him for some reason.
@alexanderlens: We'll be trying to bring in a Japenese or two to make the sponsors happy. Probably Arashiro, as he's without contract for the next season. Besides him, we'll go for some youngsters.

Stage 1
Passage du Gois - Mont des Alouettes
i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/tdf_1.png
Different from the other two Grand Tours, the Tour starts with a road stage. The Grand Départ will be on the island of Noirmoutier, from where we'll be heading back to the mainland using the famous Passage du Gois. Then it's a long flat stretch all the way to the final two kilometres, which climbs the Alouettes hill. A strong sprinter or puncher are likely to prevail on top of it and don the first Maillot Jaune.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/tdf_1_1.jpg

The Grand Départ on the Noirmoutier island earlier today. It has begun!

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/tdf_1_2.jpg

First attacker in this Tour, Thomas Damuseau! He started in a nice position near the front and could move to the front easily.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/tdf_1_3.jpg

He didn't create the decisive breakaway with that attack though, as BMC, Garmin, Katusha and Vacansoleil brought it all back together with a hard pace over the windy Passage du Gois.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/tdf_1_4.jpg

Damuseau attacked again though, and this time got away together with just one companion, Adriano Malori (Lampre - ISD).

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/tdf_1_5.jpg

They worked together perfectly, but they still got caught in the final twenty kilometres, as many teams were interested in the first yellow jersey. Especially Garmin and OmegaPharma were pushing really hard.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/tdf_1_6.jpg

Then a really surprising thing happened. Europcar leader and home rider Pierre Rolland for some reason lost contact with the peloton on a very slight uphill. He looked totally empty and wasn't able to catch back. Is he aiming for the Lantern Rouge or something?

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/tdf_1_7.jpg

Up front the race continued as the sprint trains started to form. OmegaPharma did a perfect job setting up Gilbert with Vanendert and Roelandts, while Curvers and Van Hummel also placed Kittel nicely. The other stage favourites were a bit disorganized a bit behind the two trains.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/tdf_1_8.jpg

Gilbert launched very early, almost immediately as the road started to rise. Kittel couldn't match the acceleration and fell back, while Rojas (Movistar), Geslin (FDJ), Feillu (Vacansoleil) and Spanish champion Rodriguez (Katusha) all followed Gilbert.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/tdf_1_9.jpg

Rojas proved that Gilbert had gone a bit too early, as the Movistar rider managed to sneak around him in the final kilometer to celebrate a prestigious victory and also don the first yellow jersey. Gilbert held off Feillu and Rodriguez for second place, while Kittel finished 11th.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/tdf_1_10.jpg

Rolland finished a full SEVEN minutes later, losing pretty much all hopes of a good result in the GC. Well, if the Lantern Rouge is his goal, then he succeeded. Geniez, Huguet and Damuseau all dropped back in the final to make sure that they'd be allowed to attack in the next stages.

Stage 2
Les Essarts - Les Essarts (TTT)
i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/tdf_2.png
To make sure that we wont get a new yellow jersey wearer every day, stage two provides us a team time trial, which will make sure that there are some gaps between the riders going into the next stages. We have no expectations for this stage, since Kittel and Geniez are our only riders with a TT stat over 70.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/tdf_2_1.jpg

Radioshack started early and were expected to be one of the top teams today. It looked like it would be just like that after the first intermediate time check, but they eventually faltered and finished on a very disappoiting time.
30'27

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/tdf_2_2.jpg

Team Europcar then, and we almost immediately saw a scenario we recognized from yesterday's stage. Pierre Rolland wasn't able to stay with his team and was on his own early in the stage.
31'07

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/tdf_2_3.jpg

Saxobank led by Alberto Contador for pretty much the whole stage, did as expected lose some time on the fastest teams, giving Contador a bad position in the GC.
30'46

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/tdf_2_4.jpg

Highroad were also one of the favourites for today, but didn't even come close and also lost Mark Cavendish during the race. Maybe he's not really in shape?
30'47

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/tdf_2_5.jpg

Finally a good time then, as BMC Racing Team with Aussie champion Cadel Evans clocked a really fast time, taking a provisional lead.
30'08

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/tdf_2_6.jpg

They didn't get to be in that lead for long though, as Leopard Trek finished just a few minutes later, knocking Evans & Co. down by a quite big margin, giving the Schlecks a perfect start to this race.
29'52

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/tdf_2_7.jpg

As I said, our lack of timetrialling ability will probably be seen in the results sheet. We actually did much better than I had expected, but we were still almost a minute slower than Leopard. Still a good time.
30'50

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/tdf_2_8.jpg

One of the last teams to start, and also the last with a realistic chance to knock down Leopard Trek, Sky. They were fast, but not fast enough, giving the victory to Leopard and the yellow jersey to Andy Schleck. A bit too early in the race to defend the jersey I think.

isn't the time trial from Les Essarts to Les Essarts instead of Les Herbiers to Les Herbiers?

roturn
Congrats to 3 awesome NC wins. Banana
And good luck for the rest of the Tour. Your team looking strong enough for some breaks. Stage wins would be great for Skil.

FuglsangxTH3
Well your loss is less than 1 minute so evrything is open good luck in the next stages and hope for aa couple of stage wins

@baia: Agreed. We didn't expect anything from Kittel on that stage anyway because of the hard finish.
@schleck: Yep, it is. Mixed it up with the Chrono les Herbiers race. Fixed now.
@roturn: Thanks a lot. I'm really hoping for a stage win too.
@fuglsang: Thanx.

Stage 3
Olonne-sur-Mer - Redon
i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/tdf_3.png

Stage three provides the first true sprinter stage in this race. It's flat all the way from the start in Olonne-sur-Mer by the Atlantic Ocean to the finish in Redon, a little bit to the north and a bit more inland. Strong winds are forecasted, so we can always hope for echelons.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/tdf_3_1.jpg

Both Hupond and Huguet in the day's breakaway. Joining them were nine other riders, with some strong names in it. Especially the likes of Boom (Rabobank), Pozzato (Katusha) and Stybar (Quickstep) strengthened the group.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/tdf_3_2.jpg

The peloton started to give chase as we passed over the Saint-Nazaire bridge. Just as expected there was really strong winds, stretching the peloton out a lot.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/tdf_3_3.jpg

After a few very windy kilometres, the field finally splitted. Almost a hundred riders were on the wrong side of it, including the likes of Kessiakoff (Astana), Kiryienka (Movistar), Velits (HTC) and the Radioshack duo Brajkovic and Horner. None of them made it back and they all lost big time today.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/tdf_3_4.jpg

The splits caused a bit of chaos in the peloton and the pace dropped for a little while. That opportunity was used by Juan Antonio Flecha to attack and blow past the breakaway, building up a minutes advantage.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/tdf_3_5.jpg

Flecha was much stronger than the sprinters teams thought, and he was still ahead as the sprint kicked off. Romain Feillu (Vacansoleil) made his move on the far right side very early in a last desperate try to bring Flecha back. Kittel still near the front, but very tired after the winds.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/tdf_3_6.png

Nothing the sprinters did could prevent Flecha from winning the stage though, and the Spaniard had plenty of time to celebrate a magnificent victory after an extremely strong solo ride. He also took over the Maillot Jaune from Andy Schleck.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/tdf_3_7.jpg

Feillu's early launch proved to be enough to take the mass sprint, just ahead of a closing Hushovd and KoM jersey wearer Gilbert. Almost all the sprinters, including Kittel, were too tired in the end and couldn't challenge. 14th place for Marcel isn't great, but will do for now.

Stage 4
Lorient - Mur-de-Bretagne
i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/tdf_4.png

The fourth day of racing is the first one where gaps are expected. The steep final climb up to Mur-de-Bretagne might be short, but it's hard as hell. High slopes all the way to the top, with a slight flat-out in the final metres. It's definitely possible to create gaps up the climb, so maybe a first battle between the favourites?

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/tdf_4_1.jpg

As always Skil riders in the break. This time not just one, but three, Geniez, Damuseau and Dutch champion Curvers. Geniez completed his goal by winning the Laz climb halfway into the stage, collecting three KoM points. Other prominent names in the group were Boom (Rabobank), Hinault (AG2R) and a bit surprisingly Petacchi (Lampre).

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/tdf_4_2.jpg

As the pack came close to catching them, we got some late attacks from decent riders in the peloton. Geniez were the only one from the early break who could follow the likes of Vaitkus (Astana), Roy (FDJ), Navardauskas (Garmin) and Kern (Europcar) as they blew past the former breakaway.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/tdf_4_3.jpg

It was game over for them too though, as we hit the steep slopes of the final climb. Vacansoleil at the front setting up points jersey Feillu, while Kittel are in good position, going to try even though it's uphill.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/tdf_4_4.jpg

Vacansoleil surprised everyone with an early launch from Poels, taking Feillu with him and gapping the rest of the pack. Katusha realised the danger quite quickly and sent up Pozzato to close the gap for Rodriguezm while Evans tries to do it himself.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/tdf_4_5.png

Too late. Feillu showing amazing form once again by holding off Evans in the final to pick up his first Tour stage win ever. Poels also finished in a strong way, keeping the final podium spot ahead of Rodriguez. Kittel went boom when the sprint kicked off and faltered to 25th place.

Interestingly, a split happened in the final kilometres, and notable names such as Frank Schleck (Leopard), Luis León Sánchez (Rabobank), Chris Froome (Sky), Ezequiel Mosquera (Vacansoleil) and Maillot Jaune Juan Antonio Flecha (Sky) all lost time today, with the latter handing back the jersey to Andy Schleck.

High-paced reports Wink Nice to see three Skil-riders in the break, you will be one of the most aggressive teams here for sure! Some favourites already missed a split, shit happens.. no need to worry for Skil-fans though Smile

And it's a good idea to show the finish-screens in .png! The winning riders will like it as well Wink

Stage 5
Carhaix - Cap Fréhel
i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/tdf_5.png

The second true sprinter stage in this Tour, heading north to the finish line in Cap Fréhel on the north coast of France. A mass sprint is highly expected, so maybe we'll see the first Cavendish win in this edition?

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/tdf_5_1.jpg

Skil again represented in the breakaway, today by Geniez and Huguet, together with among others Langeveld (Rabobank), Nuyens (Saxobank) and very surprisingly German top sprinter Greipel (OmegaPharma).

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/tdf_5_2.jpg

With some of the escapees being a small threat in the GC, Leopard kept them in control the whole day, and not even an attempted solo ride from Geniez worked. The brave Frenchman was finally caught with just under twenty kilometres to go, putting an end to the break.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/tdf_5_3.jpg

A quite big crash inside the final ten kilometres left many riders tangled up near the back end of the peloton. Fortunately all the favourites made their way through it, and so did all our riders.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/tdf_5_4.jpg

Three teams built the strongest trains today, with Vacansoleil getting the best position of them, while we and HTC found us a little bit back of the Dutch squad leading out green jersey Feillu.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/tdf_5_5.jpg

An early kick from Astana's fast Lithuanian Tomas Vaitkus was closed down by Kittel as we entered the final kilometer. Unfortunately the slight uphill costed Marcel a lot of energy and others were coming really fast from behind.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/tdf_5_6.png

At the line it was once again points leader Feillu who could raise his arms in victory, after edging out Matthew Goss in the final metres. Kittel faded away a bit in the last kilometer, but grabbed our first Top 10 in this Tour by finishing 8th.
