Our team:
img233.imageshack.us/img233/4546/ploeg.jpg

Our goal is to win the race with Gesink or Sagan.

Close to the summit of today's 2nd climb, with still 132km to go, the peloton is getting smaller and smaller. Only 78 riders are in it, including all our teams'riders. A group of 50 riders follows at 1'30.
img849.imageshack.us/img849/6731/1132km.jpg

Then 6 riders jump away and the pace in the peloton drops. The 6 are: Pavel Brutt (Katusha), Alessandro Proni (Acqua & Sapone), José Rujano (Androni), Remmert Wielinga (Itera), Eros Capecchi (Liquigas) and Pet Bencik (PSK). Crossing the finish line in Varese for the first time, they have a lead of '52 to the peloton. Still 68km to go.
img443.imageshack.us/img443/4831/268kmvjyv.jpg

In the penultimate lap, with 19km to go, the 6 are still together up front. The lead has brought back to 2'11, thanks to hard work of the Lampre-team. Their leader Przemyslaw Niemiec must have good legs today.
img13.imageshack.us/img13/8683/319km.jpg

Already in the last lap, the 6 leaders start the last climb of the day. They have 5.6km to go, but the chasing peloton is very close. Rob Ruijgh and Jelle Vanendert help the Lampre-guys in the chase.
img10.imageshack.us/img10/5616/46km.jpg

Eros Capecchi has attacked out of the leading group and creates a small gap. The chasing peloton has already caught the other former BOTD-members, and with 4km to go, they are only '9 behind Capecchi.
img706.imageshack.us/img706/4554/54km.jpg

Then comes the attack of Robert Gesink. With 3km to go, he passes Capecchi and has a 15-second gap to the peloton.
img710.imageshack.us/img710/2617/53km.jpg

Under the flamme rouge, Gesink is still in the lead but starts to struggle. The guys in the peloton start their sprint '12 behind Gesink.
img706.imageshack.us/img706/6709/61km.jpg

Gesink barely hangs on, but he holds it! He takes the win in the Tre Valli Varesine, just edging out Przemyslaw Niemiec (Lampre) and Giampaolo Caruso (Katusha). Peter Sagan was positioned too far behind and has to settle with th 5th place.

The winner:
img705.imageshack.us/img705/7035/9gesink.jpg

Word from the DS: The way we like it, winning and with only a little work that has been done to achieve it! I was a little surprised by Robert that he could continue his punch all the way to the finish. But it came very, very close in the end. 25 more metres and he probably wouldn't be on the podium.

Coppa Agostoni
img838.imageshack.us/img838/4950/logogn.jpg

The Coppa Agostoni is a hilly 1.1 classic in Italy. The 2010 edition was won by Francesco Gavazzi.
img525.imageshack.us/img525/7849/francescogavazzi2010.jpg

This is how the route should be. In PCM, the first part is flat, than some pretty steep hills, and the last 40km are pretty flat again.

Our team:
img195.imageshack.us/img195/4546/ploeg.jpg

Our goals: Jelle Vanendert and Peter Sagan are our leaders. The team will work for them and it depends on how Sagan has survived the climbs, if he can sprint for the win.

The first thing we see from the Coppa Agostoni is Francis de Greef climbing his bike again. He crashed, but managed to get back in the peloton again.
img444.imageshack.us/img444/606/1valdegreef.jpg

A 13-man group leads the race with 100km to go. In it are lots of Eastern-Europe based riders. As the break won't last long, I won't give the names.
img10.imageshack.us/img10/8061/2100km.jpg

WIth 85km to go, we see an attack by Danilo Di Luca (Katusha). He is followed by Mitja Mahoric (Adria Mobil). Eros Capecchi reacts a few minutes later.
img411.imageshack.us/img411/6305/3diluca.jpg

Capecchi joins the other 2 and quickly drops them. His pace on the last climb of the day is too hig for them. So with 54km to go, he is in the lead, with Di Luca and Mahoric 1'16 back and the peloton 3'13.
img94.imageshack.us/img94/4150/4capecchi.jpg

25km to go and Capecchi is still in the lead. The chasing group is 1'56 behind and closing in.
img510.imageshack.us/img510/6876/525km.jpg

Capecchi fights like hell, but 7km before the finish, the chasing group (only 15 riders in it, including Peter Sagan, Wout Poels and Jelle Vanendert) is about to catch him.
img64.imageshack.us/img64/7545/87kmh.jpg

With 3 riders, the Monster Energy - Ford riders form a majority in this leading group. Poels takes the lead and sets up a small train, followed by Vanendert & Sagan. Vanendert still feels great, but Sagan has become pretty tired.
img690.imageshack.us/img690/3887/91km.jpg

Vanendert takes the lead with 400 metres to go. Peter Sagan has lost contact with his back wheel.
img80.imageshack.us/img80/3303/10400m.jpg

And no one is able to compete with Jelle Vanendert. The Belgian rider takes his first win of the season, beating the Acqua & Sapone duo Cayetano Sarmiento and Stefano Garzelli. Sagan takes the 5th place, behind Przemyslaw Niemiec.

Word from the DS: This is an unexpected win. Not the win for the team, but the win for Vanendert. He always works his ass off for his leader (e.g. Gesink in the Giro), but now he had a shot in his own. He did great, and we feel that the team is ready for the Vuelta.

Dutch Food Valley Classic
img193.imageshack.us/img193/8663/logozlx.jpg

After been on the road for a long time, and just before I'll try to lead the team in the Vuelta d'Espana, the Monster Energy - Ford takes part in a 1.1 race with start and finish in my hometown Veenendaal. The race was called Veenendaal - Veenendaal, but thanks to some sponsors, it's now called Dutch Food Valley Classic (thanks to the Agricultue University in Wageningen). The route is almost 200km long, and it leads the riders over the hills of the Veluwezoom (including the world famous Posbank, 900m at 8%) and the Utrechtse Heuvelrug (Amerongse Berg, 1km at 6%).
img638.imageshack.us/img638/5533/profielw.jpg

The race is a great step up for talents, to start their career. In 2010, Edvald Boasson Hagen won the race. Unfortunately, he won't defend his win this edition. And I hope the organisation won't present these horrible wooden shoes this year....

Our team:
img32.imageshack.us/img32/4546/ploeg.jpg

As you can see, we start the race with all 5 of our stagaires. This means that Bobridge and Vanmarcke will probably have to do a lot of work for our sprinter Ligthart.

A group of 13 riders forms the BOTD. We decide not to be part of this group. Our stagaires can learn enough from rising in the peloton, and the 3 more experienced riders can focus on the final part. The most known names in the leading group are Jean-Eudes Demaret (Cofidis), Marco Bandiera (Quick Step), Barry Markus (Rabo CT), John Murphy (BMC) and surprisingly Michael Matthews (Rabobank). WIth 100km to go, the lead is 4'30.
img21.imageshack.us/img21/9840/1100km.jpg

When the leading group has done 50 more km, so 50 to go, the lead is 3 minutes.
img831.imageshack.us/img831/3017/250km.jpg

In the final part of the race I forgot to take screenshots (I was watching/listening to the tv-show of the Voice of Holland at the same time, and a man can;t do 2 things at the same time, women say....). So I can tell you what happened: it turned out in a mass sprint. I wanted to let Pim Ligthart take the back wheel of Chris Sutton, but he lost it with 5km to go (it had something to do with breakaway riders getting caught and the entire peloton had to pass them with dangerouw move, you know it...). So he started the sprint in the wheel of BMC's Alexander Kristoff. In the end, Sky's Cristopher Sutton took an easy win, beating Yauteni Hutarovich and BMC's Danilo Wyss with a few metres, Ligthart took the 4th place.

the last of the 3 GT's in 2011 is the 66th Vuelta d'Espana. 21 stages, 3300 km and 6 summit finishes,14 km. team time-trial and 40 km. individual time-trial stage will bring out the successor of Vincenzo Nibali.
img560.imageshack.us/img560/3076/routet.jpg

Last year was a strange edition. Igor Antón looked like cruising to the overall win, but a crash in a descend towards the Pena Cabarga, and a broken collarbone, changed the Vuelta. Joaquim Rodriguez took over the lead, but that guy can't ride a ITT, so Vincenzo Nibali was the leader before the decisive stage to the Bola del Mundo. Xacobeo's Ezequiel Mosquera attacked on that cimb and it appeared like he would take over th elead But Nibali was tough and managed to close the gap to Mosquera and thus securing his GC-win.

GC favourites:
***
img31.imageshack.us/img31/2108/robertgesink.jpg
Robert Gesink already won the Giro d'Italia this year. After that, he took a long break and he seems to be in improving shape, after winning the Tre Valli Varesine recently, His team is strong, so are his climbing abilities, and that makes him favourite number 1.

img804.imageshack.us/img804/2668/menchov.jpg
Denis Menchov made the transfer last winter to the new Geox-team. After missing a wildcard for the Tour de France, his goals are fully set on a 3rd Vuelta-win. The question is if he can hang on the steeps ascend of the Angliru and Pena Cabarga.

img90.imageshack.us/img90/1388/joaquimrodriguez.jpg
Joaquim Rodriguez is one of the best puncheurs in the world, he's a very good climber, but a very, very bad time trialist. The question is if he can minimize the loss in the ITT.

**
img840.imageshack.us/img840/5126/ezequielmosquera.jpg
Last year's runner-up can maybe surprise again. He switched teams to the Dutch Vacansoleil-VCD team, a team of buccaneers. He has to do a lot of work to let them work for him, instead of being in breakaways all Vuelta long.

img856.imageshack.us/img856/7595/llsu.jpg
Luis Leon Sanchez is a good time trialist, a good cimber and a good puncheur. And somehow, he can't ride a good GC. When all pieces fall together, he can be in the top 5 of the GC.

img11.imageshack.us/img11/7370/chrisfroome.jpg
Chris Froome ca be a surprise this Vuelta. The Sky-rider can perform very well on all aspects that makes a good GT-rider.

*
img718.imageshack.us/img718/5566/tejayvangarderen.jpg
Tejay van Garderen is a future GC-winner (okay, he can get a top 3), but is still young. Can he minimize the loss in a off day?

img542.imageshack.us/img542/2209/mikelnieve.jpg
Without the appearance of Igor Antón and Samuel Sanchez, all pressure is on Mikel Nieve. Especcially because the Vuelta returns to Basque country after 33 years.

img401.imageshack.us/img401/9351/damianocunego.jpg
Damiano Cunego won the Giro d'Italia of 2004, but after that, he couldn't fulfill the expectations anymore. Will he focus on the GC, or on a stage win?

Sprinters:

***
img827.imageshack.us/img827/8619/markcavendish.jpg
There's no better way than this picture to tell Cav's season. The worlds fastest sprinter can't win the big races. Maybe this Vuelta?

img10.imageshack.us/img10/931/edvaldboassonhagen.jpg
Edvald Boasson Hagen alreasy won the green jersey in the Tour, and is now looking for some wins in the Vuelta.

img10.imageshack.us/img10/2626/jjrojas.jpg
José Joaquin Rojas has the advantage and a strong Movistar-team that will work for him. Can he get a stage win?

**
img847.imageshack.us/img847/4922/oscarfreire.jpg
3-time world champ Oscar Freire can win when nobody expects it. So he's a favouite to win a race, but not for the points-rankings.

img192.imageshack.us/img192/6527/andregreipel.jpg
Just as Cavendish, André Greipel rode a disappointing Tour. The German wants to get revanche in teh Vuelta.

img189.imageshack.us/img189/1030/heinrichhaussler.jpg
Heinrich Haussler is a very good sprinter, but has to decide to improve his sprinting abilities or his cobbles abilities. When he doe sthe first, he can become a world class sprinter.

*
img10.imageshack.us/img10/1558/petersagan.jpg
Peter Sgaan isn't the best sprinter, but he can ride in the hills very well, so is a serious contender for the points-rankings. Can he do the same as EBH in the Tour?

img194.imageshack.us/img194/9756/francescogavazzi.jpg
Without the presence of Alessandro Petacchi, Francesco Gavazzi can ride fr his own chance in the Lampre-team. A stage win will be difficult, but some top 5 rankings should be possible.

img571.imageshack.us/img571/163/theobos.jpg
Theo Bos ha sto fight with his teammate Peter Sagan for the trust of their team. Bos can loose all sprints, but win the next one, so never count him out!

The goal:
img593.imageshack.us/img593/4338/leiderstrui.jpg

Our goals:
- Top 3 in the GC, but we really want the first place!
- Stage win(s).

Good luck in the Vuelta! Not the hardest startlist, but many good sprinters!

The Vuelta d'Espana kicks off with a 13.5km team time trial in the streets of Benidorm. This will be the third time that Benidorm hosts La Vuelta; the first was in 1964 and the second in 1987, which was also a time trial. On this occasion, a very technical 13.5km circuit leaving from the beach will test the coordination of the teams.
img525.imageshack.us/img525/1074/1perfil.jpg

The Monster Energy - Ford team has a bad start in this Vuelta. After the 8th place in the TTT in the Tour de France, although with a different group of riders, we hoped to be in the top 12, but completely failed. We finished in a time of 21'17 and only the Liquigas-team was slower than us (Note I started the race with all riders on dot 90, than on top of the hill, with 9km to go, on dot 95 and th elast 3.5km on dot 99).
img192.imageshack.us/img192/3021/5mon.jpg

The 5th place in the TTT goes to the Garmin - Cervélo team in a time of 20'36.
img412.imageshack.us/img412/5784/4gar.jpg

Team Sky, including leader Chris Froome, is 2 seconds faster and sets a new best time in 20'34.
img197.imageshack.us/img197/5373/6sky.jpg

HTC - Highroad perfroms way better than in the Tour de France, when they collapsed in the 2nd part of the race. They, with Tejay van Garderen and Mark Cavendish in it, are 2 seconds faster and the 20'32 will bring them to the 3rd time in general.
img72.imageshack.us/img72/5995/2htcs.jpg

The home favourites of the Movistar Team are 1 second faster than the HTC team. This time will bring sprinter José Joaquín Rojas in a great position to take over the red jersey the next stage.
img825.imageshack.us/img825/6514/3mov.jpg

And which team wins this TTT? Rabobank! It's a surprising win for the Dutch team in a time of 20'28. Young Dennis van Winden is the first on the finish and therefore the first leader in this Vuelta.

Word from the DS: Let's say that we wanted to make the challenge for Robert Gesink a little bit bigger by losing almost a minute..... Bad TTT....
