Stage 8
We´ve finally reached the mountains. Today´s stage, 207km long , contains 8 mountain sprints and finishes at Alto de Aitana - 25,7km long climb with average slope of 5,1%. After yesterday´s time trial I´ve decided priorities for this race. Garzelli is our man for overall rankings, while young Francesco will fight for Maillot rojo. It means he must be active today.
My domestiques set high pace from ther start to avoid any successfull breakaway. It worked, peloton came together under first mountains. Then Masciarelli tried to sneak away several times, but mainly guys from Cervelo didn´t let him go far away. He managed to steal some points in hard KOM battle though, keeping himself in touch with leaders in KOM competition.
Two Xacobeo riders finally established themselves in front and built 5 minutes advantage over peloton.
Only on of then, Garcia Dapena, survived until last climb, his advantage shrinked to 3 minutes though and hungry peloton was geting closer.
It was a question of time, when main contenders will start with attacks. Mosquera lost his nerves first, followed by Contador, Menchov and Sanchez.
Not for long, Alberto Contador started to push hard and Mosquera with Menchov imediatelly dropped out.
Leader of Caisse Joaquim Rodriguez came from behind and joined M&M several moments later.
10km to go, Garcia Dapena were caught by leaders, he couldn´t follow them for a second.
For what has he waited so long? Carlos Sastre finally attacked reduced peloton, several riders including Garzelli tried to keep with him. His attack was too powerful though, no one could follow him.
Meanwhile Menchov started to struggle. Bad day only or not the best shape?
Sanchez with Contador constantly increased their lead in front.
Mosquera in troubles...
...and Sastre could go past him quite easily.
Both leaders came together into last kilometer, Sammy Sanchez opened sprint,...
...Contador didn´t react and Sammy could celebrate great stage win! El Pistolero was beaten, but still keeps his jersey safe.
Garzelli and Masciarelli came together with several other riders 3 minutes later...really huge disappointing result for Garzelli today.

It wasn´t so bad...and Contador let Sanchez win,we can see on the screen that both have a little talk before end...maybe Sanchez asked Contador if he would allow him to win.... |

I´ve experienced several unpleasant crashes, so I have no pictures from upcoming stages
Stage 9
Hilly stage with 7 KOM sprint promised hard battle for Maillot rojo. Unfortunately Masciarelli had no legs today and didn´t collect even point. Most active riders were Cobo and Garcia Dapena, who gained enough points to wear KOM jersey tomorrow. Riders had to pass uneasy short but very steep climb Alto de Xorret del Cati right before finish. Alberto Contador atacked first there, followed by several riders. Luckily Garzelli was one of them. Samuel Sanchez was another one and achieved second win in a row, decreasing his loss in GC by another 8 seconds. On the other hand Denis Menchov couldn´t react in time and lost too much today. Today´s 6th place in same time as winner helped to our captain to leak into TOP10.
Stage 10
My plan for this mostly flat stage was simple. Paolini had to join BOTD and try to win if peloton let them go. Luca tried to attack several times, but with no success. Although there were no dangerous riders in breakaway, some teams immediately increased pace of the P. Only rider who could establish himself in front was Maillot rojo holder, David Garcia Dapena. He won only KOM sprint 25km before finish and increased his overall lead in KOM competiton. Carlos Sastre attacked peloton in climb, followed by Xacobeo riders Mosquera and Castano. They caught Garcia Dapena quickly. Very impressive to see three Xacobeo riders in front. Several riders (Gilbert, Vicioso, Kroon and Albasini) tried to joined them and gained small advantage over the P. Meanwhile Mosquera and Castano stayed in front alone, both Sastre and Garcia Dapena couldn´t follow them. Carlos Castano won the sprint ahead of Mosquera, while Sastre and remaining escapees were caught just before line. Sastre finished 3rd though and gained few bonification seconds for GC. Mosquera jumped over Garzelli, who dropped to 8th place overall.
After rest day and another hilly stage we´ll finally reach the hardest part of race, 3 stages with mountain finish - hopefully with pictures again...

I see another thing...while Contador or Menchov already raced 69/67 days, Sanchez, Sastre and Mosquera are all far under 60. It could indicate, who are fully concentrated on Vuelta and who not |

my plan is to finish this season with PCMdaily2009 DB (and I will!) and then reinstall and continue with new 2010 DB (with another team)
ad Mosquera: I was really surprised as well when I saw him in national jersey |
