Stage 3: Los Sauces - Observatorio del Roque de los Muchachos
i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/Vuelta/PCM0019.jpg

3 stages in and already we get an uphill finish. We'll see who is strong and who isn't.

i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/Vuelta/PCM0020.jpg
Stage 2 winner, Cuadrado, is the first to attack on the Roque de los Muchachos. Garcia Gonzalez is trying to follow.

i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/Vuelta/PCM0021.jpg
Ruben Plaza and Elias Morca attack. This spurs Discovery Channel into action and Donald, Ardila and Lovkvist all look to follow.

i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/Vuelta/PCM0022.jpg
Morca's attack is strongest, however, and he estabilshes a lead of 43 seconds.

i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/Vuelta/PCM0023.jpg
Chasing him are Plaza, Lovkvist, Ardila, Donald, Garcia Gonzalez and Cuadrado.

i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/Vuelta/PCM0024.jpg
Cuadrado can't keep up the pace.

i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/Vuelta/PCM0025.jpg
The pack has been driving hard to close the gap and manages to get close enough with 15km to go (as Cuadrado is caught) for Pardilla, Sorensen, Mitodorov and Redondo to attack.

i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/Vuelta/PCM0026-1.jpg
Nobody is going to get close to Morca, however. With 10km to go, he has a 1'21 lead which keeps growing.

i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/Vuelta/PCM0028.jpg
Pardilla has caught Ardila and Donald, who have earlier dropped Plaza, Lovkvist and Garcia Gonzalez. Donald is starting to struggle, though.

i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/Vuelta/PCM0029-1.jpg
Donald finally can't keep up with Pardilla and has to set his own pace. Ardila, on the other hand, is strong enough to stay with Pardilla. It is a tough call to make, but we order Ardila to stay with Donald and help him along. It's still early in this tour and Donald is still our main man.

i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/Vuelta/PCM0030.jpg
Morca was so fast today, he crossed the finish line before anyone could snap a picture. This guy has logged a super human number of days racing this season. How did he manage such a dominant win? He can't possibly keep it up for 3 weeks.

i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/Vuelta/PCM0031-1.jpg
Pardilla finishes 2nd. Despite a wide gap to Morca, this puts Pardilla as the favorite right now. He has a big gap over 3rd place and seems likely to be stronger over the course of 3 weeks than Morca.

i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/Vuelta/PCM0032-1.jpg
Donald and Ardila are caught at the line. Ardila manages to hang on to a deserved 3rd place. He has done a good job helping his teammate and both are now in the top 10.

Into the hills! Should be a sprint finish, though. We plan on sending Meersman into the break today.

i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/Vuelta/PCM0002-3.jpg
Meersman, indeed, manages to get into the days break.

i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/Vuelta/PCM0003-3.jpg
It looks like today might be a day for the break. With 12 km to go they have a 2 minute lead. Pagoto decides to take advantage of the chance to win and attacks.

Meersman is in the break again today. With enough climbing points, he can take the KoM jersey today.

Stage 9: Berja - Baza
i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/Vuelta/PCM0007-3.jpg

Back in the mountains, although this is not a particularly difficult stage and therefore we do not expect the overall standings to change here.

i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/Vuelta/PCM0009-2.jpg
Iduriaga tries his luck 19km from the peak of the 2nd climb. Giesecke joins him. They won't get far.

i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/Vuelta/PCM0010-1.jpg
The chase up the mountain does have some effect on the pack, which is reduce to 71 riders as a result.

i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/Vuelta/PCM0012-1.jpg
Farrar has managed to stay in the front group and as we hit the sprint, he is the only true sprinter in the running.

i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/Vuelta/PCM0013-1.jpg
Farrar moves into the lead.

i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/Vuelta/PCM0014-1.jpg
Farrar wins it! First stage win for Discovery Channel in this Vuelta. With Eisel and Impey picking up zero points on this stage, Farrar is catapulted into the thick of the points race.

Supposed to be a 5km TTT but turned out to be 3.4 km. Saunier Duval won. Not much more to say about it.

Stage 10:Sabadell - Estacion de Esqui Coll de Pal
i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/Vuelta/PCM0012-2.jpg

A real mountain stage today. We'll see if Morca really has it here or was his earlier performance a one-hit wonder.

i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/Vuelta/PCM0013-2.jpg
Meersman goes in the break today, chasing more mountain points.

i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/Vuelta/PCM0014-2.jpg
Giesecke, Iduriaga and Gurendez try to get away from the pack up the Coll de la Creueta. They stand no chance.

i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/Vuelta/PCM0015-1.jpg
Meersman attacks across the peak to take maximum points. That puts him in the virtual KoM lead.

i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/Vuelta/PCM0016-2.jpg
Things are calm until 17km from the finish when Pardilla launches a powerful attack.

i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/Vuelta/PCM0017-2.jpg
He is followed by Donald, Lovkivst, Ardila, Sorensen. Mitodorov and Plaza follow.

i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/Vuelta/PCM0019-1.jpg
Moreno, Redondo and Sanchez join in the fun.

i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/Vuelta/PCM0020-1.jpg
Cuadrado and Ricco go.

i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/Vuelta/PCM0021-1.jpg
Morca is in the pack, out of the saddle and looking like he is having a hard time. All that racing must have finally caught up with him.

i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/Vuelta/PCM0022-1.jpg
With 8km to go, Pardilla has a sizable lead of 1'39....

i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/Vuelta/PCM0023-1.jpg
...over Sorensen who is being chased by Plaza, Mitodorov, Moreno, Sanchez, Donald, Ardila, Lovkvist and Redondo.

i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/Vuelta/PCM0024-1.jpg
Further back is Cuadrado with Evans behind him and Ricco with Garcia Gonzalez further back.

i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/Vuelta/PCM0026-2.jpg
In the pack, Caisse is trying to pull Morca forward.

i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/Vuelta/PCM0027-1.jpg
Lovkvist can't keep up the pace and is the first to be dropped.

i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/Vuelta/PCM0028-1.jpg
Donald and Ardila are both in minus days and have to slow to their own pace.

i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/Vuelta/PCM0029-2.jpg
Nobody is going to come close to touching Pardilla, however. He takes the golden jersey. The mountain points gained here also push him past Meersman into the KoM.

i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/Vuelta/PCM0030-1.jpg
Sorensen takes 2nd.

i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/Vuelta/PCM0031-2.jpg
Redondo wins the group sprint to take 3rd.

i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/Vuelta/PCM0032-2.jpg
Donald and Ardila finish with Evans and Cuadrado.
