USA Pro Cycling Challenge - Stage 7

August 28, 2011

i1236.photobucket.com/albums/ff456/mresuperstar3/USA%20Pro%20Cycling%20Challenge/Stage%207/Profile.jpg

11 times around this hilly circuit in the state capital of Colorado,
Denver, for the finale.

i1236.photobucket.com/albums/ff456/mresuperstar3/USA%20Pro%20Cycling%20Challenge/Stage%207/1.jpg

It's a 7 man breakaway as we finish circuit #4.

i1236.photobucket.com/albums/ff456/mresuperstar3/USA%20Pro%20Cycling%20Challenge/Stage%207/2.jpg

As you can see Taylor Phinney does much of the work in the breakaway
today just hoping the peloton doesn't make the catch.

i1236.photobucket.com/albums/ff456/mresuperstar3/USA%20Pro%20Cycling%20Challenge/Stage%207/3.jpg

But that just wasn't going to happen,
the peloton keeps them in their sights for most of the day.

i1236.photobucket.com/albums/ff456/mresuperstar3/USA%20Pro%20Cycling%20Challenge/Stage%207/4.jpg

A strange move on the second to last time up the climb,
Kanstantsin Siutsou attacks!

i1236.photobucket.com/albums/ff456/mresuperstar3/USA%20Pro%20Cycling%20Challenge/Stage%207/5.jpg

But he is pulled back on the downhill,
so as we approach the climb one last time
Staf Scheirlinckx and Greg Van Avermaet jump out front.

i1236.photobucket.com/albums/ff456/mresuperstar3/USA%20Pro%20Cycling%20Challenge/Stage%207/6.jpg

And these two have timed their attack perfectly.

i1236.photobucket.com/albums/ff456/mresuperstar3/USA%20Pro%20Cycling%20Challenge/Stage%207/7.jpg

It's wheel to wheel as they approach the line.

i1236.photobucket.com/albums/ff456/mresuperstar3/USA%20Pro%20Cycling%20Challenge/Stage%207/8.jpg

Scheirlinckx nips Van Avermaet at the finish,
the peloton follows closely behind all in one group.

Interview - Andrew Talansky

Q: Your really having yourself a nice season, compared to what you did last season. What's the difference?
A: A combination of more leadership roles and gaining more experience in the peloton. Oh, and the fact I continue to grow into a better cyclist.

@fcancellara: Thanks Wink

@sutty68: I'm very pleased with that, as long as we keep getting ranking points at each race I will be happy. Two months left on the season now and promotion is right in front of us (I can almost touch it  ).

It's not as easy as the profile suggests,
as wind and rain are projected in the forecast.

i1236.photobucket.com/albums/ff456/mresuperstar3/Paris-Bruxelles/1.jpg

And the rain greets the riders on the startline today.

i1236.photobucket.com/albums/ff456/mresuperstar3/Paris-Bruxelles/2.jpg

As the riders ride out of the rain, a 10 man breakaway is formed.

i1236.photobucket.com/albums/ff456/mresuperstar3/Paris-Bruxelles/3.jpg

But don't worry the rain comes back soon enough,
it's get really dangerous out there now.

i1236.photobucket.com/albums/ff456/mresuperstar3/Paris-Bruxelles/4.jpg

Not surprising a major crash occurs, however none of the favourites
are taken out as it happens near the back of the peloton.

i1236.photobucket.com/albums/ff456/mresuperstar3/Paris-Bruxelles/5.jpg

EA-Sony picks up the breakaway with 12kms to go.

i1236.photobucket.com/albums/ff456/mresuperstar3/Paris-Bruxelles/6.jpg

5kms to go and Larsson takes to the front, a nice preparation ride as he hopes to defend his World ITT Championship in two weeks.

i1236.photobucket.com/albums/ff456/mresuperstar3/Paris-Bruxelles/7.jpg

Larsson stays on the front for as long as possible
before handing it off to Keough to lead Phinney to the line.

i1236.photobucket.com/albums/ff456/mresuperstar3/Paris-Bruxelles/8.jpg

A lot of riders start their sprint early creating a traffic jam up front,
as Phinney gears up behind Keough.

i1236.photobucket.com/albums/ff456/mresuperstar3/Paris-Bruxelles/9.jpg

Phinney finds a little room and goes for it with 300 meters to go.

i1236.photobucket.com/albums/ff456/mresuperstar3/Paris-Bruxelles/10.jpg

And like a lightning strike Phinney jolts to the front.

i1236.photobucket.com/albums/ff456/mresuperstar3/Paris-Bruxelles/11.jpg

What a win! Taylor Phinney had speed nobody could match,
what a sprinter this man could turn into in the (near) future.

i1236.photobucket.com/albums/ff456/mresuperstar3/Paris-Bruxelles/12.jpg

But you can't give all the credit to Phinney,
what a train EA-Sony Ericsson put together today.

Interview - Taylor Phinney

Q: That might have been the closest win ever here at EA-Sony, can you take us through the last 20 kilometers?
A: Well, Talansky and Howard picked up the breakaway at 12kms. Then Cozza did a great job taking control from 12 to 6kms. And then Larsson was unhuman for the next 4 kilometers. And from there Jake found me a hole to get through with 400 meters to go and I went. This was probably one of the best rides by our team all year, it's was fun to be apart of it.

Team Expectations

Sony Ericsson highlighted a stage win at the start of the season as a goal, and I don't see why we can't achieve that. After the sprint train we pulled off yesturday, we bring pretty much the same group of riders. The only problem in our way might be the Hushovd and Farrar combination. We also need to keep Larsson safe in the peloton as this is his last prep race before heading to the World ITT Championships.
