Even though Cancellara messed it up you can only be awed by the way he still left the 12 man group biting dust yet again. That was the really big surprise, to me at least. And when you can catch Cancellara/Chavanel wheel like Nuyens did after 250+kms of hard racing you also deserve the win. It wasn't epic, but you still have to be there |

Nuyens virtually drove the perfect race. Was hardly seen through the race (although he suddenly got lost in group 3 after the trieu). But was at the front when people fought for victory.
So you see. Being the strongest doesn't garantue your victory, you should also be smart enough
prevent hangovers --> stay drunk
pozzato, basically the most stupid cyclist around
RIP WW. Gone but not forgotten

Chavanel was on exactly the right team there.
He got an armchair ride from Cancellara because of the team he was in. Like Devolder twice - if he'd ending up winning the race, it would have been because he was in Boonen's team. |

After a week of computer problems I finally got to watch a download. Amazing race, absolutely brilliant. Probably the best classic I've seen. I feel really sorry for Chavanel because he was the fastest at the end, but most importantly, it was a fantastic race |

I disagree Stijn. Nuyens virtually rode the luckiest race.
He was caught in the second and third group so many times, often by simply being dropped, by being not good enough.
Normally in Flanders, you're finished then. But in this years edition, the front group never stayed away, they kept coming back.
In the end Nuyens biggest luck was that Geraint Thomas was there. He fully worked for Flecha and brought the group back after de Muur, and then AGAIN after the Bosberg.
The only thing Nuyens did on his own, was chosing the right attack in the final flat kilometers.
For that, you can credit him, that was smart.
But all that happened before, he got lucky, a lot of times. Normally when you start Kwaremont in 120th position, you're finished. But like I said, this year, the first group never quite 'broke away'. |

Well maybe he was lucky, maybe he was just smart to be at the front when it was important
When you, after such a hard race, can follow Cancellara him self and Chavanel, and beat them in a sprint, you are a deserved winner imo |

If only Nuyens didn't ride for Saxo, then I would be happy. |

Fixed!
You're Canadian, lets see it
Also Deadpool told me to cheer Rollin on for him.
@Ruben- Riders make their own luck 80% of the time.

a. Source for that statistic?
b. Just no in this case. Nuyens got very lucky because of factors outside of his control. Yes he did well at the end, but before that, he had no say in the groups coming back together (which is highly irregular) after he had been dropped. Getting dropped is in no way making your own luck

No doubt imo that Nuyens was the smartest rider. Not the strongest, but smartest. A lot of people says that, including Museeuw

a. Life is your answer! (except the 80% part was made up.)
Thats why I said 80% because although he didn't do much he still had enough luck to stay with the group he dropped down to, and I would say he created his own luck by working on his sprints at some point in his career to beat out the other two. Atleast give me that.

I shall give you that (just, because I'm nice )
I wasn't really having a go at you, I just hate phrases like that which are normally pointless, untrue and/or extremely patronising

“I’m very happy: there were fifty of them behind a gladiator,” Cancellara continued. “It was a spectacle and a double satisfaction: I lost by trying to win, the others rode only to make me lose. And in the end the one who was always in the wheels won. Congratulations to Nuyens, but for me [winning] like that has no value.”

I'm sure Nuyens doesn't care, though |

Cancellara is just such a baby. Stupid stupid comment imo.
EDIT: He is a great rider, but a true champion would not come with those comments. But ok, he isnt the champ of Vlaanderen anymore, so maybe he is just pissed because of that

He has a fair point - every race he's won i've seen him attack hard and never shirk his turn on the front (correct me if I'm wrong). I think he may feel that hiding away and then winning with one little sprint at the end is not a worthy way to win.
However, it would be difficult coming from the viewpoint of someone who has the ability to blow every race apart. |

That's extremely unfair. Not just for Nuyens, I can remember a good number of riders who did a hell of a work in Flanders. It's true that the tactics of some of them were awful, though. |

I don't think he meant to talk bad about the other riders, he wanted to say that you would never see him sucking wheels. But if you don't know that he is rather egocentric, his comments might sound harsh.
But he might not be the most clever person, else he should have realised by now that most riders have no other option then to follow him... |

"Worthy? Sure. But I think with other years he didn’t live the life as he had to do: like a professional rider. But now, as I say, he was motivated by Riis, as Riis motivated the whole team – because you can only win a big race when you have a whole team – and then you see the result: he wins Waregem [Dwars door Vlaanderen – Ed], he wins now the Tour of Flanders…”"
Words from Freddy Maertens, he is spot on imo. Link to the article https://www.velonation.com/News/ID/801...Ronde.aspx
Btw Cancellara on twitter "Interview's are not coming out like always i be thinking to say things.Specially now whats around sounds not me.lot get lost in translation"
Hmm |
