22.05.2010: Giro d'Italia
Stage 13
Venezia - Trieste: 158.0km
Tactics meeting
A short, flat stage today, but the lack of gradients will be more than compensated for tomorrow when we climb the Zoncolan. It's good for us if another breakaway goes clear today.
Columbia controlled the proceedings today, and Mark Cavendish brought home his second stage win in the Giro. He won by a large margin over the other sprinters. Yesterday was his birthday, so this is a nice birthday present for the Manxman. Not that anyone gave it to him...

23.05.2010: Giro d'Italia
Stage 14
Trieste - Monte Zoncolan: 220.0km
Tactics meeting
The Zoncolan was visited in 2003 and 2007. Both times, Gilberto Simoni summited first. He has now retired, so another rider will today be crowned King of the Zoncolan. The climb averages 9%, and is preceeded by 200 kilometers of riding including two smaller climbs. If Kreuziger can hold on to his pink jersey today, he has only one seriously threatening stage left (the queen stage coming two days from now).
The breakaway, where Ivan Rovny was our representative, had a maximum lead of 12 minutes at one point. The strongest climber in the break was probably Sylvester Szmyd of Garmin.
On the last climb before the Zoncolan, only Rovny and Maisto (QST) were left in front.
At the foot of the Zoncolan, David Lopez joined them while the pack was not far behind.
Rovny and Maisto couldn't keep up with the heads of state, and Lopez was also soon caught.
The peloton started to thin out 6 kilometers from the summit. Of the Discovery riders, only Kreuziger looked strong. Pereiro, Brajkovic and Larsson began to struggle as they hit the steepest parts.
2 kilometers from the top, only 9 riders were left in the front group with Nibali setting the pace. Tony Martin, 2nd in the GC, had been dropped, so had all Discovery riders except Kreuziger in his pink jersey.
Brajkovic, Larsson and Pereiro were with Tony Martin in the second group on the road. They were 50 seconds behind the nine leaders. Ivan Basso was even further down the slopes.
Inside the last kilometer, Nibali began to open up a gap which only Kreuziger could bridge. Our pink jersey had been retained, but could Kreuziger get the stage win?
Nibali even dropped Kreuziger in the final meters, and is the winner on Monte Zoncolan!
Michele Gaia performed brilliantly to get the same time as 3rd placed Barredo, while Soler and Scarponi took 5th and 6th, respectively. These were the only ones to finish within a minute of Vincenzo Nibali. Pellizotti lost quite a bit of time today.

Sure!
The fun of random potential is that young talents such as Gaia can suddenly emerge. It will be interesting to see what he can do in the Giro next year. |

Haha, it's hard to get used to almost the only race where the leader's jersey is not yellow |

24.05.2010: Giro d'Italia
Stage 15
Comeglians - Fonzaso: 190.0km
Tactics meeting
The flat stage between Zoncolan and the queen stage will most definitely see a breakaway go clear and win. If the sprint teams decide to chase today, we'll push them off their bikes. Everybody needs a rest, but there will of course be someone who's going to give it a go. We plan to be part of the action to maybe get another stage win.
We actually managed to put two guys in the first breakaway. Behind Rovny, Rubiera, Gobbi (CMO) and Velo (QST), a larger breakaway was chasing.
But the other breakaway could never reach the first one, as our two riders did the lion's share of the work. With 25km to go, the four leaders had 15 minutes back to the peloton and 1'30 back to the larger breakaway. The two non-Discovery riders were beginning to look tired.
6km before the finish, Ivan Rovny attacked his break companions. Neither Velo nor Gobbi could answer, and Rubiera tried his best to disrupt the chase.
Ivan Rovny was never caught, so the 22 year old Russian won his greatest victory so far in his carreer! It's our third stage win in this Giro, and with Kreuziger also fighting for the overall win, it's turning out to be one hell of a Giro for us.
Rubiera tried his best to make it a Discovery 1-2, but Marco Velo was too strong in the end. The main field clocked in 13 minutes after Rovny.

Hey isn't kinda weird that most of the stories are in the Giro, and the real Giro is in a week.

I like the fact that I posted the prologue of Romandie on the day when it took place
I guess most stories are progressing at roughly the same speed. The 2010DB was released just in time to get the stories to coincide (sp.) with the Giro. |

25.05.2010: Giro d'Italia
Stage 16
Fonzaso - Alpe di Pampeago: 190.0km
Tactics meeting
It's the queen stage of all queen stages. Stage 16 is probably the toughest stage the Discovery team has raced so far during this one-and-a-half season. Five steep mountains must be conquered before the final climb to Alpe di Pampeago: 10% average gradient over 8 kilometers. If Kreuziger is still in pink at the end of the day, he can rightly call himself winner of the Giro d'Italia 2010.
Only a few kilometers into the stage, Scarponi and Pozzovivo went on the attack. Scarponi was sitting 8th in the GC, while the CSF captain was 14th.
Scarponi&Pozzivivo's breakaway triggered a strong chase in the peloton on the way up the first mountain, so at the summit, a lot of riders had been shed.
On the second climb, Carlos Barredo also broke away in pursuit of the two leaders.
The three strong climbers formed a solid breakaway, which held a lead of 4 minutes by the time they reached the intermediate sprint. 70 hard kilometers remained to the finish.
Over the third last mountain, the main field only counted 21 riders, including Kreuziger, Pereiro and Larsson. Brajkovic hasn't got the stamina for such long forays into the mountains. The three-man break was 2 minutes in front at this point.
By the time the peloton, if we can call it that, reached the penultimate climb, it had been reduced to six riders: Nibali, Gaia, Soler, Pellizotti, Valjavec, Kreuziger. The breakaway, still consisting of Scarponi, Pozzovivo and Barredo, led by 1'40.
Near the top of this climb, Barredo dropped the two other brave escapees.
From the six riders left in the favourites group, Soler with Nibali not far behind, summited first and got a gap to the four others, including Kreuziger.
Before the bottom of the last climb to Alpe di Pampeago, Kreuziger, Valjavec and Pellizotti had dropped Michele Gaia. The situation was Barredo first with 1'27 to Scarponi & Pozzovivo. They had 50 seconds down to Soler & Nibali, while the Kreuziger group trailed these two by 40 seconds.
Soler & Nibali, who had left Kreuziger on the summit of the last mountain pass, caught Scarponi & Pozzovivo halfway up the climb to Alpe di Pampeago. Barredo was still 50 seconds ahead, and Kreuziger&co were 50 seconds behind this Nibali group.
Soler and Nibali were obviously fresher than the two who had been in the break all day long, and left them easily. Soler even gapped Nibali by some meters.
The early escapees Scarponi & Pozzovivo were not only passed by Nibali & Soler. Also the Kreuziger group caught and passed them.
The third early escapee was never seen again, though. Carlos Barredo, who had been on the move since the second mountain, won the queen stage of the Giro!
Soler finished 2nd, 55 seconds down, with Nibali just behind. Nibali could get the pink jersey, depending on how far back Kreuziger was. Soler moves from 12th to 5th overall.
Kreuziger and Pellizotti came home 1'15 behind Nibali, and 2'47 behind winner Barredo. Kreuziger can wave goodbye to his jersey for now, but the deficit in the GC is not more than 12 seconds. It can be made up in the final time trial. The third member of this group, Valjavec, cracked inside the last kilometer.
The rest of the Discovery team finished way behind today. Especially Brajkovic, who crossed the line like a dead man 17'30 behind Barredo. The Slovenian falls from 9th to 21st in the GC. He is not made for these distances. As much as 68 riders missed the time limit today, including the entire Lotto team, all of Agritubel except one, and Mark Cavendish. What an epic stage this was!

It once happened in real life that they lost 5 riders in one TdF stage. That was a long time ago though.
But Kreuziger should be able to kick Nibali's ass in the TT. Go Roman! |
