Stage 3 (last one today)
Another flat stage gives another opportunity for sprinters. Due to strong side wind we must be careful and avoid any unpleasant time losses.
Luca Paolini couldn´t find good position before sprint, maybe it will be better in next flat stages.
Mirco Lorenzetto surprised all elite sprinters and took great stage win for his team! He was fastest in bunch sprint when he could defeat Thor Hushovd in last metres. Tyler Farrar took last podium place today. Mark Cavendish couldn´t be happy with his today´s performance, but kept gold jersey for another stage.
1 Marlón Pérez Caisse d'Epargne 4
2 Stephen Cummings Barloworld 2
3 Dimitri Kryvtsov ISD - Neri 1 |

Stage 4
Today´s stage finishing in Belgium is classified as hilly. Riders will face up to several small climbs, e.g. famous Cauberg or Mont Theux. Stage will finish after 224 km in Liege.
Strong breakaway group including Nocentini or Gilbert established shortly after start and built nice advantage of 9 minutes over the P. Gilbert won both mountain sprints on Cauberg and secured Maillot rojo for himself.
Rinaldo Nocentini was last man who could keep Philippe...but he droped out 40km before finish, while peloton was still 3 minutes behind.
Although it was almost sure that Gilbert will be caught, he had completely different opinion. His advantage never droped under 2 minutes and after reaching of last mountain sprint at Mont Theux summit he head towards finish town.
There were some attacks mostly launched by puncheurs like Kolobnev or Kroon, but Team Astana didn´t let them go.
After more than 200km Philippe Gilbert reached Liege and took great stage win!
EBH and Mark Cavendish brought the peloton with all contenders into finish 1'29 back.
Gilbert was awarded for his effort by many kisses and Maillot oro as well. Although we are still at the beggining of race, Philippe is third rider which will put this jersey on his shoulder. Will he be able to keep it more than day or two?

Stage 5
Welcome in Spain! After massive regroupment from Liege to Tarragona riders are heading towards quite flat stage, with few minor hills. Team silence - Lotto is full of strong flat riders and they will certainly defend Maillot oro for their leader.
Interesting tactics made by Silence. They´ve sent Staf Scheirlinckx into solo break and easily controlled front of pack. Staf won both mountain sprint and took KOM jersey form his team mate.
Later on, teams with elite sprinters took control over the pack, Scheirlinckx was caught and everyone started to prepare for bunch sprint. Several sprint trains were created, Heinrich Haussler was lead-out man for Thor Hushovd with Matti Breschel at his back.
They´ve created huge gap before rest of field! Thor moved forward, but Matti looked very calm and powerful!
And yes, Breschel went over Thor and won stage 5! Luca Paolini took decent 5th place behind Cavendish and Farrar.

I see that you also went for the resized screens. Nice choice
But I think you made them a little bit too small. It's better to resize them 'manually' rather that letting photobucket do that for you.

Stage 6
If we would compare both stages yesterday and today, we could find only minor differences. Something else than bunch sprint would surprise me a lot.
BOTD - Bertogliatti, Jalabert and Anza. Anza as last survived breakaway rider was caught about 20km before finish.
Usual picture from mass sprints - Hushovd behind his lead-out man Haussler...they established fastest train again.
Thor was more lucky than yeasterday and could finally celebrate stage win ahead of surprisingly fast Carrara, Eisel and Paolini. Another decent result for our sprinter! Gilbert will defend his overall lead in tomorrow´s timetrial.

Stage 7
Stephen Cummings was the fastest man from second half of field.
Cummings´s time dominated over all until David Canada crossed finish line. David defeated Stephen by 5 seconds. He finished 19th at the end of day with 2'14 loss. though.
Our main hope, Stefano Garzelli, rode quite well today, he couldn´t beat Canada´s so far best time though. Stefano finished as 20th, 2 seconds behind David.
Carlos Sastre must be on good shape! He crushed best time easily by amazing 46 seconds!
But he couldn´t celebrate for long, Angel Vicioso improved his time by another 18 seconds and took the lead.
One of main contenders for overall win is called Samuel Sanchez. Actually he is my personal hot tip for Maillot oro in Madrid. He finished 3rd today, 1'02 behind winner.
We could see an incredible performance of David Herrero today! Although he can´t be count between main contenders, TOP10 may not be unrealistic result. He defeated Sammy´s time by 12 seconds and only one rider could beat him.
No, Denis Menchov isn´t the right man. He finished 5th today with same time as Maxime Monfort (sorry, I forgot to make his picture).
And he is the winner. It´s not any surprise that the best stage rider in the world won today´s time trial. Alberto Contador demonstrated his power and destroyed all hopes of other contenders for Maillot oro by very decisive performance. His time was fastest by incredible 50 seconds!
Last man on the road, Philippe Gilbert couldn´t fight with best time trialist today and had to say goodbye to Maillot oro. As we are heading to first mountains tomorrow, he won´t have certainly any chance to take it back again.
