One of the 2 World Tour races in Switzerland is the Tour de Suisse, a stage race with 9 stages, consisting of a lot of time trialling and climbing. Last year, Jurgen Van den Broeck took the GC-win.
The Route
It's the same route as in 2010, won by Fabian Cancellara, meaning it has no decisive climbs. The Tour de Suisse starts with a 7.0 kilometre prologue in Lugano, including a climb to the Via S. Giorgio. In the 2nd stage, the riders reach an altitude of over 2000 metres above sea level (Simplonpass), but the summit is more than 80km before the finish. The 3rd stage to Schwarzenburg has a hilly final.
The 4th stage to Wettingen could be for the sprinters, whereas the hills in the final part of stage 5 towards Frutigen are probably too difficult for them. Stage 6 is the queen's stage, with the Sustenpass and Oberalppass in the first half of the stage, and the summit of the Albulapass (13.8km at 6.8%) about 10 kilometres before the finish in La Punt.
Stage 7 to Wetzikon is hilly again, and could give some GC-changes. Th epenultimate stage to Liestal is relatively flat, so the GC-contenders can rest before the final 27km ITT in Liestal.

No Wilco Can't you just send him to every stage-race on the calendar?
No, seriously, a very strong team. Gesink's form isn't ideal, but I think it's good enough. A top 3 should be realistic.

If Gesink wants to be good in the Tou,r he'd better not show Wilco's level yet. |

Don't think Gesink can win the Tour de Suisse. He starts with a fitness off 81, and that is too low to beat Contador and Schleck, and perhaps even De Gendt and WIggins. All he needs to do is to shine in the Tour!

Stage 1
The first stage of the Tour de Suisse is a 7.0km prologue in Lugano. It's a very hilly prologue, as it contains 140 height metres.
Thomas Dekker rides a very, very fast prologue. He crushes the best time so far set by Roman Kreuziger by 10 seconds. The time to beat is 12'10.
At the summit of the Via S. Giorgio, TT world champion Fabian Cancellara is 4 seconds slower than Dekker. But in the descend back to the Lago di Lugano he takes a massive amount of risk. And it pays off, as he crosses the finish line 1 second faster than Dekker....
Tony Martin won the ITT in the Bayern Rundfahrt, but apparantly isn't in his best form yet. Der Panzerwagen is 2 seconds slower than Cancellara, and ties with Alejandro Valverde in 3rd place.
The GC-favourites have started, and Robert Gesink has the goal of not loosing time. He takes the 11th place, at '10. He is faster than Kreuziger ('1), Froome ('2), Contador ('6) and Wiggins ('12), but slower than De Gendt and .... ANdy Schleck (both '2). Not a bad start at all!

Aaaagggghhhhh, so close......... Poor Thomas, I'd thought he had Cancellara in the back at the summit, but Spartacus must have taken some enormous risks in the descend....

I think you mean 1405 height feet earlier!
Otherwise the entire prologue would be at a gradient of about 1in5!
Good result for Gesink though, nice ride to start his attack on Suisse

Stage 2
The 2nd stage in this Tour de Suisse is classified as a mountain stage. Only reason is the Simplonpass (20km at 6.6%, alt 2005m). After the summit, 80 kilometres remain, so even the sprinters can come back in the peloton.
80km to go
The pace of the peloton in the long ascend of the Simplonpass is pretty slow. No attacks occur, and even nobody sprints for the KOTM-points. Consequently, Sky's Michel Kreder takes the points (and the KOTM-jersey) and 153 riders can join him.
14km to go
No attacks occur, untill the hill 14km before the finish. Przemyslaw Niemiec (Alitalia) and Kim Kirchen (Sony Ericsson) are the first ones to attack, and they will be followed by, well, half of the peloton?
Finish
A small group of 7 riders manages to create a margin to the peloton, and will sprint for the win. Surprisingly, all the sprinters in the peloton, such as Boasson Hagen, Cavendish and Kittel all have no energy left to sprint.
Nicholas Roche (Radio Shack) is the fastest of the 7 and wins the 2nd stage, his first win for his new team. Franco Pellizotti takes the 2nd place, and Dario Cataldo the 3rd.

Word from the DS
What a strange stage. First, even all the sprinters arrive at the summit of the Simplonpass in the peloton, without problems. Then, at a small hill, attacks all over the place that none of our riders could counter. And the sprinters suddenly ran out of energy and all finished outside the top 20..... Oh well, never mind.

@ Csabi13: Gesink will be our leader here, but Dekker will have a protected role by now. And when Gesink can't follow and Dekekr can, Dekker will be the leader.
@ baggieboys32: 140 it is... Mistyped.
