This can't go wrong for Kelderman

Stage 8
The last stage in this edition of the Critérium du Dauphiné is only 114 kilometres. But the riders have a lot of climbing to do. First the Col de la Croix de Fer (via the Glandon), 21.8 kilometres at an average gradient of 7.4%. The last 14.2 kilometres of the stage ascend with an average gradient of 6.2% to the skiresort La Toussuire.
57km to go
An 11-rider group has formed the BOTD and it is stuffed with mediocre (or worse) climbers as Devolder, Stybar (again these 2) and Mori. With 57 km to go, already ascending the Col de la Croix de Fer, Rigoberto Urán (GC's 12th) attacks. The Colombian gets joined by Juan José Cobo (Dexia), Sébastien Joly (Europcar) and Stefan Denifl (Red Bull).
Also nice to see that there have been fans of Kelderman on this road!!
38km to go
Cobo is the first to crest the summit of the Croix de Fer, joined by Joly and Urán. Denifl follows at '24, but won't be able to close the gap in the descend. The peloton follows at 4'17. Just as yesterday, Kelderman is without any team mates...
15km to go
The leading trio is able to maintain it's margin in the descend. With 15km to go, close to the foot of the final climb to La Toussuire, the number 3 of the GC attacks. Richie Porte gets joined by Wout Poels (9th).
9km to go
Wilco Kelderman is struggling in the final climb, and can't keep a position among the first riders of the chasing group. Fränk Schleck, although without a chance for the GC-win, attacks, looking to score a stage win. But Cobo and Urán, Joly has been dropped, are still 3'41 in front of him (Porte and Poels ride 2'55 behind the leading duo).
5km to go
Back to the leading duo: Urán has cracked!! Meaning, the Spaniard is leading the race solo. 5km to go and Urán follows at '55, the group Porte, Poels and Schleck at 2'35 and the group Kelderman, Cunego and Seeldraeyers and friends at 3'19.
4km to go
Cunego takes over the lead of the group and increases the pace. He closes the gap to the group Porte-Poels-Schleck. But consequently, Kelderman gets dropped!! Can he hang on, or was this long spring and pre-Tour season 1 race too long??
3km to go
Kelderman is showing some balls here, as he joins the group again. But then, with 3km to go, and Urán to be caught, Seeldraeyers attack, countered by, well the entire group, including Damiano Cunego!. The GC-leader continues to ride in his own pace, and has to hang on for 3 more kilometres, luckily not the steepest.
Finish
Th ewin in this final stage goes to Dexia: Juan José Cobo takes his first win of the season, for his new team. The waiting starts for the 2nd place. Can Kelderman stay close enough to Cunego to win the Dauphiné??
Stay tuned!

Finish
Fränk Schleck takes another 2nd place at 1'26, with Cunego in 3rd in the same time. Poels and Seeldraeyers finish at 1'41. Luke Rowe finishes 6th at 1'52 and the 7th place goes to..... Wilco Kelderman, also at 1'52, meaning he wins the Critérium du Dauphiné 2014!
Kelderman showed some true fighting spirit, but needs to sit down for a few minutes after he has finished, being totally exhausted... But he has won the Dauphiné, another great win to add at his palmares!

Word from the DS
What a difficult last climb of this Dauphiné. Kelderman really showed he has the right attitude to become one of the best cyclists! The next 2-3 days, he has some interviews for the press and tv, and then it's a 2 week holiday for him, somewhere far away from the cycling world. And he has deserved it!

@ all: Thanks. He is indeed one of the better cyclists already. This season is almost over for him (maybe another Top 3 in Tour of Pologne), he has a great future.
