Stage 2
The first "real" stage in this Critérium du Dauphiné is a difficult one, as it is undulating all the way. The finish awaits in Saint-Pierre-de-Chartreuse, after a 10km climb at an average gradient of 5%.
11km to go
The BOTD begins the final climb to the town of Saint-Pierre-de-Chartreuse. Sylvain Chavanel (Garmin), Zdenek Stybar (Omega Pharma) and Jérome Pineau (Saur) have a margin of 1'50 to the peloton, with Fabio Felline (Katusha) swimming between the 2 groups. The domestiques of Radio Shack (for Damiano Cunego) have taken control of the pace of the peloton.
8km to go
The final 6 kilometres of the climb are the most difficult ones. Wilco Kelderman decides not to wait for that and launches a fierce attack. This is probably too much for the other GC-favourites, as no one counters. Cunego orders his team mates to increase the pace, trying to catch the Dutch number 3 of the Giro.
4km to go
The pace set by Kelderman is too fast for the Shackies, and Cunego is all alone. Luckily for him, Kevin Seeldraeyers (Sony Ericsson) is helping him, and the 2 leave the peloton behind. Kelderman leads the 2 by '33 and the peloton by '53.
Finish
Although Cunego gives it 1 last try with 3km to go, he can't endanger Kelderman. It's not only the in for Wilco Kelderman, but also the lead in the GC, points, KOTM and U25-ranking!
Cunego finishes in 2nd at '40, Seeldraeyers in 3rd at 1'07, Luke Rowe in 4th at 1'27 and a group with Tom Stubbe (Dexia), Fränk Schleck (Omega Pharma), Richie Porte (Saxo Bank) and Wout Poels (Rabobank) at 1'50.

Word from the DS
What a great ride by Wilco, really proud at him!! He had good legs (fitness 90, daily form +3) and decided to give it a go. Great job, and a first step towards winning the Dauphiné!

Absolute great race by Wilco
No one was able to follow his pace, he's obviously carrying his great Giro form
But others'll get better to the end of the Dauphinée, Wilco might have that reversed, so get as much time as quickly as possible! |

@ Ian: exactly what I was thinking. He know needs to gain as much time as possible (and in the ITT in stage 4) to compensate some expected time loss against Cunego and F. Schleck in the last 2 stages with th emountain top finish.
@ sutty: thanks!
@ Marcovdw: your vocabulary is limited when wilco gets good results Don't mind, like it!
@ Jesleyh: thanks, he's one of the best smaller stage races, 5th in Paris - Nice, 1st in Catalunya, 2nd in Romandie and now leading in the Dauphiné.

He is, although he is reaching his maximum potential soon. He won't be the real climber as Contador or A Schleck, but is the ultimate allrounder!

Stage 3
The 3rd stage from Voiron to Lyon looks to be pretty flat, but the danger lies in the last 2 kilometres. These are ascending with about 7%, so th ewinner today also needs some punching skills.
77km to go
It's a beautiful day in the Rhone-Alpes, and 6 riders decide to form the BOTD: Benoit Vaugrenard (Saur), Alexander Porsev (Katusha), Anthony Geslin (Omega Pharma), Matthias Brändle (Red Bull), Mathieu Delaroziere (AG2R) and Loïc Desriac (Europcar). With 77km to go, the gap to the peloton has reached its maximum with 6'25.
3km to go
The BOTD gets caught with less than 10km to go, and 3 fresh riders have attacked. Ángel Madrazo (Sky), Yohann Offredo (Dexia) and Job Vissers (Rabobank) lead the peloton by '35, but the final hill still awaits. We have set up a sprint train, trying to bring Pim Ligthart to a good finish. But the train gets derailed, due to falling back members of the BOTD, and we'll have to start the final hill with just 2 riders in the front (Kelderman & Ligthart).
1200m to go
Madrazo is the last of the 3 that gets caught, about 1200 metres before the finish. 3 small trains are moving to the lead of the race: Garmin with Pulhiès and Bonnet, Astana with Iglinskiy and Guardini and in the middle Petronas - Monster Energy with Kelderman leading out Ligthart. Katusha's Fabio Felline tries the outside of the corner.
600m to go
Pim Lighart is in the lead with 600 metres to go. But as the slope is decreasing and the road starts to become flatter, the "real" sprinters that have survived the first part of the hill are moving to the front. Gerald Ciolek (Red Bull) is in the best position, but also Manuel Belletti (BMC) and Andrea Guardini (Astana, ain't possible, he can't climb......) are among the first riders.
Finish
Gerald Ciolek takes over the lead and sprits to his first victory of 2014! It's a great result for the Red Bull-team, that will loose the main sponsor after the season (but Cervélo will take over). Belletti finishes in 2nd, Guardini in 3rd and Ligthart, who has wasted his energy too soon, in 7th.
No time gaps, so no changes in the GC.

It was a nice effort to bring Ligthart to the win, but the climb wasn't decisive enough to rule out the sprinters.

Stage 4
The second half of this years Dauphiné starts with a 42.5 kilometre hilly time triail with start and finish in Grenoble. The route contains 2 hills, and has a total of 591 height metres.
The best time so far has been set by Dexia's Yohann Offredo in a time of 1h02'18. It lasts, untill New Zealander Jack Bauer (Saur - Sojasun) hits the road. He is '17 faster than Offredo, and the new time to beat is 1h02'01.
Bauer can't enjoy for long that he has the fastest time, when he hears about the split times by Jack Bobridge. Our Aussie absolutely crushes the current fastest time, and finishes after 1h00'14!
Young American stage racer Andrew Talansky is the first rider that attacks the fastest time with a good effort. He is 1'22 slower than Bobridge, so the 2nd time so far.
Prologue winner Anthony Roux is the biggest favourite to win today. But he can't compete with Bobridge, and is more than 1 minute behind at the 2nd split time. He takes a lot of risks in the descend back to Grenoble, but has to settle with the 2nd place at '40.
Australian TT-champ Richie Porte tries to beat his countryman, but lacks the power today. He is 4th so far at 1'22 (same time as Talansky).
Then the top 3 of the GC. Belgian Kevin Seeldraeyers has to minimize the loss, and succeeds in doing it, with the 13th time so far at 2'08.
What goes for Seeldraeyers, goes for Damiano Cunego. Timetrialling ain't his favourite terrain, so with the 14th place at 2'14 he can be very happy.
Only the maillot jaune left. Wilco Kelderman knows that he can take an advance at the GC-win today. His start is relatively slow, but in the last half of the race he goes faster and faster.
Split times 1st sector:
1. Bobridge 20'31; 2. Bauer +36; 3. Terpstra +44; 4. Roux +50; 5. Kennaugh +51; 12. Kelderman +1'01; 14. Porte +1'03; 31. Cunego & Seeldraeyers +1'16.
Split times 2nd sector:
1. Bobridge 38'53; 2. Kelderman +47; 3. Terpstra +1'07; 4. Roux +1'12; 5. Porte +1'42; 16. Cunego +2'05; 17. Seeldraeyers +2'07.
Kelderman starts to see Cunego riding in front of him, and is chasing him. He barely overtakes him, what must have been a real indignation for the Italian. It's the 2nd time for the Dutch, only '16 behind his team mate.

Again, what an amazing result!! We know that the field of timetrialists isn't the strongest possible (no Martin, Cancellara, Contador, Nibali...), but still.... A 1-2 with a margin that big! And with Kelderman leading the GC by almost 3 minutes, the overall win must be certain. All he has to do is stay on his bike and follow Cunego.
