August Recap and September Outlook

In the aftermath of his victory at the Eneco Tour, Claeys was named the cyclist of the month. Our sponsors remain in an excellent mood about Discovery Channel's performance this season.

Standings

UCI Pro Tour Individual

Thomas Dekker replaces Ivan Rovny at the top of the individual standings and is looking like he may make it back-to-back individual wins.
i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/PCM0021.jpg

UCI Pro Tour Team

Chocolade Jacques records no points this month and is a long lost cause. LPR and Gerolsteiner continue to battle it out for the second relegation spot.
i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/PCM0022.jpg

Continental Tour Individual

Stephane Vrillard sits at the top of the individual standings.

Continental Tour Team

Bouygues Telecom and Credit Agricole are fighting for the second promotion spot after Unibet.

Discovery Channel Vuelta Team Preview

The team selection for the Vuelta has been set for quite a while apart from two positions. The two final selections went to Tyler Farrar and Yaroslav Popovych. Popo is not in the best of condition but is looking better than the alternatives.

Our team is as follows:

Leader: Jason Donald

Jason had a great early part of the season for us and gets the nod here as the leader. Coming into the Vuelta, we figured a good result for Jason would be a top 10 and a great result would be a top 5. Looking at the competition, however, given Jason is still pretty fresh we are thinking he may have a shot at a podium spot.

i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/Vuelta/PCM0004.jpg

Lieutenant: Mauricio Ardila

Ardila will be the guy pacing Jason up the final mountain climbs. He is in great shape and possibly could compete for a top 15 spot.

i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/Vuelta/PCM0002.jpg

Sprinter: Tyler Farrar

Farrar will be our lead sprinter and will be in the mix for the points jersey, although definitely not the most dangerous sprinter here.

i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/Vuelta/PCM0005.jpg

Sprinter #2: Juan Van Heerden

Van Heerden has piled up more racing days this season than Farrar and will probably fade over the second half of the tour. Still, he will gain great experience here.

i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/Vuelta/PCM0007.jpg

Teammate: Thomas Lovkvist

Lovkvist is on his way out of the team after this season, however he'll still play an important role here in helping Donald and pacing the peloton.

i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/Vuelta/PCM0001.jpg

Teammate: Yaroslav Popovych

Popo was meant to be the lieutenant at the Tour de France but was felled by injury. He is back now, but not yet up to full condition. Still, given a lot of the stars here have logged a full season of race days, Popo should still be able to have an impact helping Jason in the mountains.

i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/Vuelta/PCM0009.jpg

Teammate: Gianni Meersman

Gianni is here to give us some punch in the hills and perhaps go into a break or two.

i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/Vuelta/PCM0008.jpg

Teammate: Markus Reich

Markus is our time trial specialist here. He has a goal of at least one stage win. The Vuelta also gets him in shape for the Worlds.

i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/Vuelta/PCM0006.jpg

Teammate: Oier Garcia Viveros

Last and least, Garcia is here to race on his home territory with a view towards gaining experience. He'll go in a break or two and protect our sprinters.

Battle for the Golden Jersey

Other than Jason Donald, these are the guys who look most likely to be in the hunt for the Golden Jersey. It is worth noting that a lot of the guys here have logged a lot of race days this season and therefore we'd expect that what happens in the first week may be drastically different from what happens over the 2nd and 3rd weeks.

Elias Morca (Caisse d'Eparge)

Morca has had a breakout year and is, arguably, the best cyclist here. He has won the Tour de Suisse this season, took the young riders jersey at the Tirreno-Adriatico and took every jersey but the yellow jersey at Catalunya. Only question here is whether he can possibly hold up over 3 weeks given he has already logged a superhuman 86 days racing. Even so, he could still be in the mix.

i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/Vuelta/PCM0001-1.jpg

Javier Moreno (Caisse d'Epargne)

Morca's teammate Moreno is the defending champion here. This is his home soil and he has proven he can perform here. He's not had a good season, however, which begs the question as to whether or not he is at his best. Moreno has 56 race days under his belt so should still be fresh, at least for the first 2 weeks.

i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/Vuelta/PCM0002-1.jpg

Sergio Pardilla (Rabobank)

Pardilla is a past winner here. He won at Catalunya this season and only has 50 race days on him this season. He is solid all the way around and will almost certainly be well poised for a podium spot at the end of 3 weeks.

i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/Vuelta/PCM0003-1.jpg

Antonio Garcia Gonzalez (AG2R)

Garcia has raced 57 days this season. He has been a factor in several races but has not won anything. Still, this is his home country and you can bet he will be psyched up to go for a win. He is a great climber and a solid time trialist. A top 5, at a minimum, should be in his sights.

i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/Vuelta/PCM0004-1.jpg

Gabriele Tassinari (Saunier Duval)

It feels like Tassinari has logged a lot of racing this season, but in reality it is only 43 days. He's fresh, strong and already enjoyed a 2nd place at the Giro. Can he get his second grand tour podium here?

i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/Vuelta/PCM0005-1.jpg

Chris Froome (Lampre)

Froome is fresh off of a top 10 finish at the Tour de France. He has raced 56 days this season so should still have enough in the tank to be a force here. He has all the tools to be in the mix.

i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/Vuelta/PCM0006-1.jpg

Riccardo Ricco (T-Mobile)

Ricco has a top 10 at the Giro and a podium spot at the Tirreno Adriatico this season. He has raced 49 days so he certainly should be fresh enough to be a factor here. Question is whether he is strong enough to compete in the mountains with the big climbers. We'll see.

i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/Vuelta/PCM0007-1.jpg

Others to Watch: Chris Sorensen (QuickStep), Cadel Evans (Predictor Lotto), Ruben Plaza (Lampre), Fredy Gentizon (QuickStep)

Fight for the Green Jersey

These are the guys who are most likely to be competing for the points jersey:

Bernhard Eisel (Lampre)

Eisel hasn't done a lot of this season but he is fresh and skilled enough to be in the mix here.

i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/Vuelta/PCM0001-2.jpg

Tom Boonen (QuickStep)

Boonen is on the back end of his career and is not taking as many accolades as he has in the past. His only big win for the season is a stage at Paris-Nice. He is still good though, and is fresh enough to win a stage or two.

i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/Vuelta/PCM0002-2.jpg

Juan Jose Haedo (Team Wiesenhof)

In a tired field, Haedo is still fresh. The only real reason he is amongst the favorites, frankly.

i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/Vuelta/PCM0003-2.jpg

Stephane Vrillard (Credit Agricole)

Vrillard is at the top of the Continental tour standings for a reason. He is young, talented and combative. This will be a big test for him to see if he is ready to be a part of the Pro Tour.

i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/Vuelta/PCM0004-2.jpg

Daryl Impey (Gerolsteiner)

If I was to put my money anywhere, it would be on Impey. He looks to be a man with momentum behind him. He had a very good Eneco Tour, in the thick of every sprint finish. Look for good things from him here.

i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/Vuelta/PCM0005-2.jpg

Others to Watch: Lino Calvi (AG2R), Greg Van Avermaet (Predictor Lotto), Andre Greipel (Credit Agricole), Wim Stroetinga (LPR), Robert Forester (Unibet)

As the Vuelta gets underway, we have a team at this autumn classic. We're not expecting to compete for the win, but maybe a top 10.

i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/classics/PCM0001b.jpg
Break of 12 today includes our Fumiyuki Beppu. Their lead reaches 11'30 with 100km to go before the pack starts to chase.

i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/classics/PCM0002-4.jpg
Valverde attacks with 52km to go followed by Tendero, Nocentini and Khatuntsev.

i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/classics/PCM0003-4.jpg
Jelle Vanendert goes.

i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/classics/PCM0004-5.jpg
Some of the attacks don't get far as Vanendert and Nocentini are caught.

i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/classics/PCM0005-5.jpg
Just as Valverde and company are caught, Nick Nuyens launches an attack.

i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/classics/PCM0006-5.jpg
Wegmann takes off in pursuit.

i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/classics/PCM0007-4.jpg
Andriato goes along with Vanendert again.

i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/classics/PCM0008-4.jpg
Martin Gilbert is following as well.

i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/classics/PCM0009-3.jpg
With 10km to go, a member of the days break, Banos, is hanging on with his teammate, Vanendert coming up fast, 11 seconds back.

i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/classics/PCM0010-3.jpg
12 seconds behind Vanendert is a group of 7: Gilbert, Kairelis, Andriato, Nuyens, Wegmann and two members of the days break.

i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/classics/PCM0011-4.jpg
Vanendert blows by Banos and is fighting for the win with the larger group close behind.

i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/classics/PCM0012-4.jpg
2km to go and Vanendert is struggling while his chasers open up a sprint behind him.

i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/classics/PCM0013-5.jpg
Vanendert is done and Wegmann is coming fast.

Stage 2: Los Cristianos - Santa Cruz de Tenerife
i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/Vuelta/PCM0016.jpg

This stage is classified as a mountain stage, but given that the there is only one climb and it is in the middle of the race, we don't expect any fireworks here.

i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/Vuelta/PCM0017.jpg
The climb up the mountain actually ends up wiping out the field, reducing the front group to only 61.

i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/Vuelta/PCM0018.jpg
Nothing earth shattering happens after the peak and Luis Cuadrado takes the stage just in front of Ricco.
