Just a heads up on how I'll procede from here. I'm going to post you the last stage of the Giro today. Then I'll have an Giro Epilogue for you before I wrap up Bayern Rundfahrt (just result updates). Then there won't be any updates for some time, as I just want to take a breather from story writing. I hope you're not too dissapointed, but I'll have it up and running again at some point, maybe sometime next month. Until then, enjoy the last couple of updates before the break and then I'll be back with Tour of Luxembourg, which I'll do a picture coverage of, sometime next month.

Take your break..most important is that you return with your story after that...I had after TdF small motivation problem and story stoped for week...end of the season is hardest to play. But now i have next goal Vuelta. |

June 3: Giro d’Italia - Stage 21 | Vestone > Milano - 181 km
Finally we’re on the home stretch in this year’s Giro d’Italia and what a race we’ve had. Obviously it has been particularily good for us. 5 stage wins. Two by Andy Schleck, one by Nicki Sørensen, one by David Zabriskie and one by the whole team on the first stage wraps up an incomparable domination by CSC during these three weeks and in addition to this, we also won the race with Andy Schleck, as he has proven to the cycling world just how special a talent he is. Before the Giro we hoped he could get a top ten, then after the first mountain stage we changed that to a top 5. Then a bit later after the Briancon stage, we were suddenly gunning for the podium. But all of this changed after the two stages to respectively Tre Cimo Di Lavaredo and Monte Zoncolan, who proved fatal in this year’s Giro as Andy was the only rider not to lose any valuable time on his opponents on these two stages. The way he closed the deal was also incredible. Yesterday he had 23 seconds on Di Luca, but an amazing 4th place on the time trial saw him finally clinch the Giro crown, to retain CSC’s status as defending Giro champions.
The Winners of 90th Giro d’Italia, Team CSC taking hold off the race from the outset in Vestone, to steer it home for their captain.
Today’s stage is not a regular stage even though it might looks as it is that on the profile. But the remaining 157 riders in the race are just happy to have made it through even if they’re 112th in the GC. So the 21st stage is always a day of celebrating for the peloton and so it was today. After 37 km the last climb of the Giro was climbed, it was the Passo Tre Termini, that recieved the distinquished honour of being the last climb of this Giro.
Racing isn’t a part of the agenda through the first part of the final stage, meaning Andy had some time to recieve praises from Danilo Di Luca and Alessandro Petacchi.
Eventually a 5-man break got away with Rodriquez Oliver (GCE), Tomei (PAN), Verheyen (QSI) in it. The last two were quite sensational as they were Igor Anton and Pietro Caucchioli, who are respectively 16th and 14th in the GC, so a pretty odd move to jeopardize their top 20 chances this way. The sprinter teams didn’t take any chances today as they began upping the pace with 95 km to go.
The TV break consisted of a few quite unsual riders today as Caucchioli and Anton had some impossible plans for today.
As every other day the gap came down steadily and things were setting up for the classic last stage dash to the line between the remaining sprinters. A guy like Petacchi must be very hungry for the win and should he win today then the sprinters have really managed to share the stage wins very equally among each other. Mark Cavendish (Abandoned) has 1, Allan Davis 1, Danilo Napolitano 1 and Paolo Bettini 1, bringing the total of sprinter wins to a minor four. Quite unusual number actually.
A lot of teams eventually took part in chasing down the breakaway as the mass sprint was now looking inevitable.
With 20 kilometres left of the 90th Giro d’Italia the breakaway was caught and the sprinter began moving to the front. Just 20 kilometres away from victory now for Andy Schleck.
This is almost it – Andy Schleck is closer than ever to winning the Giro as the Duomo Cathedral was looming up the road right beside the finishing line.
All the sprinters found the front now as we were entering the last kilometres. Lampre tried too pull the same stunt as they did on the 18th stage with Bennati leading out Napolitano and they were in a good position. But unfortuneately for them, Petacchi had finally managed to position himself well as he found the wheel of Napolitano to get himself in perfect position for the sprint. Behind Petacchi, Marco Zanotti had positioned himself just ahead of Vicente Reynes, Paride Grillo and Francisco Ventoso. In other side of the road Liquigas were setting up a train for Di Luca as he wanted to win the points competition and in order to do so he had to come in ahead of Cunego as they were tied on point before this stage. Gasparotto was leading him out. Also Cofidis tried to set up Duque with Lequatre leading him out as Allan Davis had found the Colombian’s wheel, but in a very tough position. It’s looking as if the Lampre train would run away with this.
Petacchi and Napolitano in favourable positions ahead of the sprint. Will Napolitano claim his second or will Petacchi finally snatch a well-deserved win?
Bennati did his job to perfection and led out Napolitano in a great position. Only problem was could he hold off Petacchi? As they came through the last corner we could see that Cunego had found Di Luca’s wheel as he was also looking to win the points competition. At this point, Andy was just sitting in the middle of the pack being protected by his teammates.
At the head of the race Petacchi made his move and flew past Napolitano who could offer no reply to his acceleration. He was going to win this. He had Zanotti on his wheel, but he couldn’t hold it and so he was just looking to take 2nd ahead of Napolitano. But he couldn’t as Napolitano just held him off to earn 2nd behind Petacchi with Zanotti claiming 3rd. Ventoso who came from a difficult position really pulled of a great sprint as he took 4th. Di Luca claimed the win in the points competition as he took 16th on the stage and Cunego only managed 18th. But it really came down to the wire in the end.
Petacchi was the first rider to finish this year’s Giro d’Italia as he snatched the win on the final stage to Milano with the Duomo Cathedral in the background.
Petacchi had won but that didn’t concern us a whole lot. For us the center of attention was a 21-year old Luxembourgian named Andy Schleck, who had shocked the cycling world through the last three weeks to convert his Grand Tour debut into a Grand Tour Victory.
The End of the Line – Andy Schleck has won the 90th Giro d’Italia.
The whole team was gathered before the podium as Andy recieved his last La Maglia Rosa of this race. Di Luca and Cunego understandably looked pretty dissapointed as the Top 3 lined up to get through the last formalities of this incredible race. After soaking Di Luca and Cunego with his champagne bottle he gave it to us just beneath the podium. He did the same with the Giro Trophy. It was a fantastic experience and we did some serious celebrating back at the hotel, but even though this might be the biggest race on the calendar, there are still new races to come very shortly and actually I’ll travel to Luxembourg with both Kurt-Asle and Luke to race that tour in a few days, even though they have spent the last three weeks busting their asses for Andy, but that’s the life of a Pro Cyclist. Lets conclude shall we; 5 stage wins, the overall win, king of the mountains win, U-25 win and overall team win. Pretty damn good I’d say. Now Andy is off to a break and we are not sure when he’ll reappear but we might have some big plans for him later on. Until then let’s let the last words go to Andy Schleck for an indescribable performance.

The 90th Giro d’Italia was a rollercoaster ride for the GC as it was shook up on several occasions. 5 riders wore la maglia rosa through the three weeks in Italy. CSC won the first stage, which was a TTT, and this earned Christian Vandevelde the leader’s jersey for the next two days, before his teammate Fábian Cancellara was handed it only to lose it to Damiano Cunego on the 4th stage to Montevergine.
Stage 4 to Montevergine was won by Damiano Cunego, who also claimed the leader’s jersey on the occasion.
“The Little Prince” held onto the jersey until the 12th stage were a Di Luca raid saw himself, Andy Schleck and Gilberto Simoni gain time on Cunego, to keep all four of them in the GC fight. Cunego gained a little time on Di Luca again on the next stage, which featured a 13 km time trial Santuario di Oropa, but Di Luca just managed to cling onto it, while Andy Schleck and Simoni moved closer to the lead aswell.
Di Luca launched an attack on la maglia rosa and he succeeded on stage 12 to Briancon.
The lead was lost yet again for Di Luca on the next stage to Bergamo, where Cunego got away with Schleck and Simoni on the final hill before the finish. Di Luca caught them again however but as Cunego clinched the stage victory he gained enough time on the line to take the lead back by just 18 seconds. Things were lining up for another thrilling Giro finish. But the happiness came to an abroad end for Cunego as Di Luca and Andy Schleck were the strongest favourites on the crucial mountain top finish to Tre Cimo Di Lavaredo the following day, where Cunego lost 2’28” on Di Luca, meaning he fell to 3rd in the GC behind leader Di Luca and Runner-Up Andy Schleck.
The GC battle continued on the stage to Tre Cimo Lavaredo where Di Luca reclaimed the GC lead.
After the rest day things in the top of the GC changed once again as the peloton headed up the mythical Monte Zoncolan. This savage climb saw CSC’s youngster Andy Schleck run away with the stage victory and the overall lead as Di Luca had an awful off-day, even though he managed to hold onto 2nd in the GC, 31 seconds after Schleck. Even though Cunego managed to almost stay with Schleck to the finish it was now clear that the winner of the 90th Giro d’Italia would either be Andy Schleck or Danilo Di Luca.
Monte Zoncolan proved to be decisive as the rider who conquered its nasty slopes also eventually ran away with the overall win.
Di Luca won the 19th stage ahead of Andy Schleck, meaning he was just 23 seconds behind the young Luxembourgian before the crucial time trial on stage 20. Here Andy Schleck settled it once and for all as he grabbed 4th place on the stage and in the end he brought the GC win home comfortably as would lead Di Luca by 1’41” after the stage. Cunego had also comfortably secured 3rd place, but him and Di Luca must be stunned by the effort that saw the 21-year-old Grand Tour debutant claim victory in a race almost reserved for the experienced riders. A new star is truly born.
Andy Schleck secured la maglia rosa on the 20th stage to Verona where he took 4th on the time trial.
Andy Schleck recieved his very well-earned tribute on the final stage on the podium in Milano, where Alessandro Petacchi also had been following his stage win this day. Surely Andy Schleck will be a potential Tour winner some day with the amount of potential he’s already shown to the world with this great win in the 90th Giro d’Italia. Congratulations!
The End of the Line – Andy Schleck has won the 90th Giro d’Italia.
Breakdown of the 90th Giro d’Italia
HOT
Andy Schleck : Words almost useless, but Andy Schleck is certainly topping the hot list with his inspiring effort to win the race after his try to just complete a three weeks tour for the very first time. Watch out for this kid in the Tour de France in the future, he’s going to win it someday.
Damiano Cunego : Eventhough he “only” managed 3rd in the GC you gotta tip your hat for this guy. During the Giro he won 4 stages and he wore la maglia rosa for a total of 9 days.
Danilo Di Luca : 3 stage wins, 2nd in the GC and 4 days in the leader’s jersey made up for a very acceptable three weeks for Di Luca eventhough he might be dissapointed about his 2nd place. He lost the Giro on Monte Zoncolan.
Monte Zoncolan : The legendary finish at the top of Monte Zoncolan provided the fireworks in the last week of the Giro and Andy Schleck used its nasty slopes to launch a decisive attack on at the time leader, Danilo Di Luca. This is definitely not the last time we’ll see Monte Zoncolan in cycling.
The Organizers : The organizers of the Giro deserves some serious props for this fantastic tour. A very versatile route led to a total of 10 wins by the GC favourites and only 5 stages were settled in mass sprints. The Tour de France certainly has something to live up to this summer.
NOT
Michael Rasmussen : One of the pre-race favourites was Michael Rasmussen, but the danish climber didn’t perform well at all, finishing the Giro as 48th in the GC and without creating any havoc of any kind on the steepest climbs.
Davide Rebellin : Won the treble in the Ardennes just a month before the Giro, but even though a lot of stages suited him perfectly we didn’t see anything from the home-favourite. He did manage 16th in the GC and that’s the sole reason he isn’t topping this NOT list.
Team Discovery Channel : Despite having two GC contenders in Alberto Contador and Janez Brajkovic, the American team only managed to get away with one stage win in the shape of Allan Davis. Contador was their best rider, finishing 36th.
Saunier Duval : Despite a terrifying lineup with riders like Simoni, Riccó, Gil, Marchante, Mayo and Millar, the Spanish team only managed one stage win and they didn’t get the expected podium place, nor did they win the overall team classification. Too many cooks spoil the broth.
The Sprinter teams : The sprinters only settled 5 stages between, which is a low in Grand Tour history. A lot of stages contained small hills before the finish, but that shouldn’t prevent well-prepared sprinter teams to set up their big guys for the final dash.

June 5: Bayern Rundfahrt - Stage 5 | Rothenburg ob der Tauber > Fürth - 161 km
The penultimate stage of this tour was a quite hilly affair and the leader’s could change hands yet again today. Marcus Ljungqvist is still hoping for a podium spot so he have to stick close to especially Steffen Wesemann, who seem incredibly sharp right now. Matti Breschel has shown that his form is coming along after his crash back in March, he has just made his return a few weeks ago, so he’s putting up an impressive display and I’m really looking forward to see what he can do in the next part of the season as he isn’t feeling fatigue yet.

Olaf Pollack won the Points Competition, Kim Kirchen won the King of the Mountains, Marcel Sieberg was the best U-25 rider and T-Mobile won the overall team classification.
So a really good result for us actually as Marcus Ljungqvist finishes on the podium and Matti Breschel finishes a respectable 16th considering his comeback from injury. I think the team in Germany is really pleased with this.
Team Wiesenhof Captain, Steffen Wesemann clinched his 6th win of the season, as extends his lead in the Continental Individual ranking, now comfortably ahead of his teammate Olaf Pollack.

So Bayern Rundfahrt has come to its conclusion, meaning I'll take a break from the story writing for a while. I'll return to full strenght some time in November, where I'll start of with a full coverage of Tour de Luxembourg.

I hope this break will not end up being permanent, as 99% of temporary story breaks turn out to be. anyway, thank you for all the enjoyment I got reading all of this
