The Killer Wasps

Amazing win. It looks like you employed the strategy I tried to do in MSR, but execute it to perfection.

I was a doubter myself. Like Freitas says, I was pretty ecstatic seeing him actually win in the race. And in that fashion. I'm usually used to my team being in control of the sprint.

The strategy was like this because Van Poppel had a headache (but fit to race) and was on a 0 on the daily form, so I decided I could perhaps make good use of Van Aert's stats combo and have him in the run for 3 monuments. Obviously, it didn't play out like I hoped it would, but Danny was there to save the day Grin

A crash followed by a split in the pack put Van Poppel in a position were it was impossible for him to contest for today's victory and losing the chance to make it 3 in a row here for Jumbo.

Roosen and Jansen tried to keep the flag up but they just didn't have the speed of other sprinters in the main group. Ackermann triumphed after a very good team work by Deceuninck, followed by Van der Poel and Bol.

Van Aert tried an attack on the last climb of the day but it was neutralized by Deceuninck led pack. A strong got away shortly afterwards formed by: Van der Poel, Kung, Benoot, Van Avermaet, Naesen and Eenkhoorn. The group soon had a one minute advantage, but the collaboration wasn't great with the last 2 not taking any turns.

i.imgur.com/7fWeXQx.jpg

Still, Deceuninck would not chase behind Naesen and the group managed to stay away. Van der Poel was the strongest sprinter in the group but some late attempts of going solo before the finish line cost him and Van Avermaet grabbed the win in what was a very close sprint between the two.

Groenewegen returns to the race that he won in 2019. The breakaway got a huge advantage today and could have actually posted a threat for the pack if not for a very aggressive pace by Jumbo on the cobbles. Teunnisen, Phinney and Jansen set up a very high pace which left the pack to under 30 riders, but also dropped one of our leaders: Danny Van Poppel.

Gronewegen was still there but he wasn't quite able to challenge for the win today despite a very close finish. It was the German Champion Ackermann who put another one next to his name, with Bol and Haller completing the podium.

Plenty of climbing in this year's Volta a Catalunya. This meant very few sprinters showed up which allowed Grosu to take a stage win, despite losing a sprint to Simon Yates in the fifth stage.

i.imgur.com/1oa5veu.jpg
Grosu celebrating his first win of the season

Gesink came to the race with a brilliant form and in the third stage, he took a very unlikely win. He sat in the favorites group for most of the final climb before breakaway away in the final kilometre to sprint past Lopez and Geoghegan Hart to grab the win.

i.imgur.com/T6Bwvju.jpg
Gesink makes the biggest surprise of the race

Gesink would manage to defend his lead in the next stages, but once we reached the final brutal mountain stage everything changed. Despite having Kruijswijk with him, the Dutch rider just didn't have the same pace as Geoghegan Hart, Bernal and Lopez, who tore the favorites group apart.

Geoghegan Hart would go on to take the stage win and repeat last year's overall win, while Gesink would drop out of the podium places. It was a real shame as this was probably one of Gesink's last great races and a podium would have been the cherry on the cake.

After many splits and regroups we arrived we a group of about 15 riders in front of the race as we reached the last cobbles of the day. Van Aert and Teunissen took control of the group in an attempt to thin it.

i.imgur.com/0ymq2QN.jpg

Van Aert and Bettiol went clear at the end of the climb but they didn't quite manage to build a gap and were soon caught by the chasing group, with more and more riders coming back as they slowed down awaiting the final sprint

i.imgur.com/wzkLhmM.jpg

Van Aert and Van Avermaet seemed to be the riders with most fuel left in the tank and they battled out for the victory, with the Jumbo rider taking what should be an important morale win ahead the Tour of Flanders

Eenkhoorn and Van der Horn did a fantastic job in making sure we didn't see a repeat of last year's scenario where a sprint finish was avoided by the attackers. It was then up to the sprint train, which also delivered at high intensity, including Groenewegen who defeat Alvaro Hodeg to take the victory, in a repeat of 2019 1-2.

After the last pass of Oude Kwaremont, 5 riders went clear, including 3 (!) Jumbo riders: Van Baarle, Bettiol, Van Aert, Sagan and Teunissen

i.imgur.com/m4cWhJe.jpg

The other were definitely not happy to work in a group which contained 3 riders from a rival team and after Paterberg 3 more riders joined the group: Van Avermaet, Terpstra and Naesen.

i.imgur.com/3rbTLIX.jpg

Naesen, Sagan, Terpstra and Bettiol and Van Aert opened up a gap to the others in the flat section. While the other 4 stopped after opening up the gap, Van Aert continued his attack and went for a solo win, while Teunissen and Van Baarle joined the chasing group

i.imgur.com/eV7frUm.jpg

He didn't manage to build a large gap, but it was enough to keep him in the lead under the last kilometre banner. Sagan was leading the sprint behind, but Teunissen was right in his wheel.

i.imgur.com/Vbow74t.jpg

Van Aert was caught right before the finish line, but only one rider had the speed to go past him. And it was Mike Teunissen! It's a fantastic 1-2 for Jumbo who make it 2 out of 2 in Monuments this year

Wow, Van Aert probably pretty pissed at Mike. Imagine going solo and thinking you're gonna win and then youre teammate just sprints past you in the final 20 metres Pfft

I thought about stopping Teunissen, but I think Van Aert will have other opportunities as well, which is not really the case with Teunissen.

Despite not being the best of cobblers, Ackermann has done well this year in soft cobbled races, winning in Wevelgem or De Panne. That and his win in this race from 2019 made it him the big favorite for today.

As a result, Jumbo tried to make the race as hard as possible on the last cobbled sector, with Roosen and fresh Tour of Flanders winner, Mike Teunissen setting up an insane pace in the peloton. And it worked! Only one rider caught the Jumbo train: Christophe Laporte. They soon joined four riders who had attacked before the sector (Senechal, Hagen, Rowe and Kragh Andersen) to make up the winning group of today

i.imgur.com/FcUW8i7.jpg

This was a huge opportunity for Laporte, but especially for Hagen who couldn't have dreamed of a podium in a normal sprint here. They put up a very good fight, but in the end it was Van Poppel who was the fastest to retain last year's title.

Despite not showing last year's dominance and only winning two stages and despite no bonus seconds being awarded at the end of the stages, Alaphilippe would still enter the final time - trial in quite a commanding lead. He was 39 seconds ahead of his team - mate, Dumoulin and 49 seconds ahead of Kelderman, who were completing the overall podium.

i.imgur.com/bOnHnZh.jpg
Alaphilippe only wore rainbow in the first stage

But then came the final time - trial. The stage started with a downhill followed by two climbs. Despite a route that favored Alaphilippe, everything would be turned around. The Frenchman was clearly in an off day and by the first first intermediate check point, it was clear that it would take a miracle for him to recover and held onto the overall win.

Dumoulin and Kelderman were pretty much matched at the first 2 check points, but Tom didn't have enough left in the tank for the last climb where he lost considerable time to Kelderman, who could go on to take the stage win and the overall win as well!

Teunissen and Van Aert made it a hell of a race for the others on Carrefour de l'Arbre. And Van Aert is the first to make it out of the sector and even though the favorites group imploded, the gaps are not big at all

i.imgur.com/qqeS1QG.jpg

Bettiol, Terpstra and Van Avermaet are his main chasers. They all seem just as spent as Wout, but two Education First riders in this group can't be good news for the Belgian

i.imgur.com/6kFiboR.jpg

Van Aert is the first to enter the velodrome for the second year in a row. Can he hold on this time?

i.imgur.com/aE6GLWL.jpg

Terpstra and Van Avermaet are just 10 seconds behind him. It's going to a really close one but everyone seem to have their tanks empty at this point.

i.imgur.com/kzl8ibf.jpg

Van Avermaet was indeed done, but Terpstra managed to save something for the end. He first sprints past Van Avermaet and then he does the same thing with Van Aert. It's going to be another heartbreaking defeat for Wout

i.imgur.com/3Jhtc8y.jpg

Moving to Education First and getting a good team behind him seems to have been a great win for Terpstra. The Dutchman wins the Hell of the North!

Your team has been in amazing form lately. Hurts to get 2nd at PR, but still a good result, and the form of the team recently makes up for it.

alexkr00
Can't really be upset given how well things have been going lately. But I feel like I'm disappointing Van Aert. He was to get one of the big two sooner rather than later. Maybe I will just sit an let the others waste their energy instead of attacking from far away.

A surprising move by Alaphilippe who decides to attack with about 20 kilometres to go. Lambrecht, Formolo and Konrad join him. The move is neutralized about 10 kilometres though and it will be interesting to see how it will affect Alaphilippe, who had no reason to attack form so far away

i.imgur.com/Dowzw2v.jpg

Fuglsang is on domestique duties today as he leads the way for Alaphilippe on Caugerg. The black and yellow riders, led by Kelderman are right behind the Frenchman, watching his every move

i.imgur.com/QJ4ofGk.jpg

Alaphilippe slowed down a bit after the top of the climb and Kelderman saw this as an opportunity to surprise the Deceuninck rider and started the sprint instead of waiting in the Frenchman's wheel

i.imgur.com/l8QPCjr.jpg

The World Champion was still the fastest though and had no problem countering Kelderman's move and beating him to take the title of kind of the Cauberg for the second year in a row. Van Aert had a very fast sprint in the final kilometre to take third.
