Good showing from the team today.
Aru to fight for KoM will be awesome.
Nibali might be in an uncomfortable position. Too far behind to really fight for GC but not far enough I think for people to let him ride away. |

It's a shame both Aru and Nibali have suffered but I really do like this scenario. Minutes can be gained in one single mountain stage so keep going for an improved GC position / stage win(s) / that KoM jersey

@Butler/Kiserlovski01 - We still hope for some miracle, this can go in many directions, but i dont think a podium or something like that is likely.

6/5-28/5 2016 Giro d'Italia
14/5 Stage 9/21 Radda in Chianti – Greve in Chianti ITT 40.5 km
It is not raining, but very cloudy and a strong breeze.
The first rider to take the hot-seat for a longer period is Lotto Soudal’s Lars Ytting Bak, with a 1h00’17” time.
Astana’s first is Zeits he loses 54” to Bak.
New best Stefan Küng (BMC) 59’09”
Aru has a very good day, despite ITT is not his game he only loses 12” to Küng.
As expected Guardini will not fight for this he loses 3’23”
New best Silvan Dillier (BMC) with 58’54” but right behind him Jérôme Coppel (IAM) it setting new best on sector 2 and 3 and get in with new best 58’42”
Kangert a pretty god tempo rider get in 8th losing 44” to Coppel, acceptable but no more than that.
Almost having passed Steve Morabito, Cataldo get new best sector 3, but he get a very bad last sector must have started out too hard and get in 31” behind Coppel.
It has started to rain.
Nibali is having if not diamonds then at least good legs, he beat Coppel at any sector setting new best with 58’09, 32 seconds faster.
GC 5th Roman Kreuziger (Tinkoff) sets new best just 3” faster than Nibali: 58’06”
But Rigoberto Urán is just in an unbelievable good shape right now the GC leader set the final time 56’54 stunning 1’12” faster than Kreuziger.
Result of previous GC top 10:
Rigoberto Urán Urán | Cannondale Pro Cycling Team | 56’53” | Richie Porte | BMC Racing Team | +01:37 | Mikel Landa Meana | Team Sky | +03:15 | Riccardo Zoidl | Trek - Segafredo | +02:24 | Roman Kreuziger | Tinkoff | +01:12 | Andrey Amador Bikkazakova | Movistar Team | +02:12 | Adam Yates | Orica-GreenEDGE | +03:39 | Jarlinson Pantano Gomez | IAM Cycling | +03:33 | Miguel Ángel López Moreno | Astana Pro Team | +03:03 | Gianluca Brambilla | Etixx - Quick Step | +02:36 |
Evaluation:
Overall:
Despite being GC leader this was the first season win by win 29 years old Colombian Rigoberto Urán, his first win since winning Grand Prix Cycliste de Québec September last year.
Today positive surprise was Roman Kreuziger (Tinkoff) 2nd although not considered a favorite by bookmaker and media.
The worst result was clearly Sky, with Kiryienka being a top favorite coming in as 17th.
Astana:
Vincenzo Nibali did great with a podium, slowly advancing the GC.
Dario Cataldo also with a very fine ITT just outside top 10
Miguel Ángel López also did fine considering this is not his favorite discipline, holding on the his GC.

The top 10 certainly is within reach now if Nibali can keep this up. Would be a great comeback.

Real life has caught up with your story, if you replace Astana, Aru and Nibali with Sky, Thomas and Landa. |

So true - too often bikes or cars create those accidents.

15/5-17/5 2016 Vuelta a Castilla y Leon 2.1
15/5 Stage 1/3 Arevalo – Valladolid 194.3 km
Right from the start we got a 7 rider breakaway, they are reeled in. then we got a 4 riders breakaway.
The pace in the peloton is very fast, and in a sharp turn we have a crash right in front of Tour’s director’s car number one, it looks very bad.
Race favorite Cyril Gautier (Ag2r) was down.
Again the breakaway are reeled in, the pace have now been hard for more than 53 km.
Then finally we get a breakaway that the peloton will accept, it is Malaguti (Unieuro – Wilier), Vinhas (FC Porto), Fonte (Rádio Popular), Parrinello (Area Zero) and Antunes (LA Aluminios).
The breakaway gets about 5’30 before the peloton starts the chase, it is mainly Lampre and Cofidis sharing the workload.
The breakaway is over with just 3500 meters to the line, it this point the sprint trains has already been formed.
Astana got Fuglsang in front of Boom leading for Nikitin.
It is a technical sprint with some difficult curves, the strongest today is Van Asbroeck in front of Cimolai and Božič.
Nikitin gets a respectable 8th
Evaluation:
Overall:
Having a great season so far this was the 4th season win by the 26 years old Belgian Tom Van Asbroeck.
He previously won Volta Limburg Classic and got stage wins in Tour de San Luis and Szlakiem Grodòw Piastowskich,
The stage played out as expected, all the favorite teams got a rider in top 5.
Astana:
A crazy stage seen with Astana eyes, Nikitin crossed the line as 8th, but was accused of punching Katusha’s Marco Haller in the sprint and was kicked out of Vuelta a Castilla y Leon, to make things worse he fell on the stairs of the rented apartment later that night and was seriously injured. (*)
