Well you were in the best 4/5, and sad that Grabsch didn't take at the last.

Yeah another funny aspect of this story for me is to see how JAJ develops in the time trials, he'll be good at it, but at some point in his career when in peak condition he might take do top 20s. But he is pretty rubbish.

Giro d’Italia – Stage 1
Being here is still very new and pretty big for me. You can sense it in every rider you talk with, that they are scared. Scared of the prospect of three weeks of hard labour. For most these tours aren’t joy rides at all. In all fairness I don’t think it’s joy ride for anyone, but it will be for at least one rider when we hit Milan. The one who wears the pink jersey. There are actually a lot of Danes riding here, and I took some time to catch up with at the startline and during the stage. Besides me, Chris Anker Sørensen (Astana), Claus Michael Møller (Quickstep), René Jørgensen (Tinkoff), Søren Kierkegaard (LPR Brakes) are all riding.
Everybody gathered around Siutsou today to keep him out of the wind and out of troubles. This must the purpose of National Jerseys; showing them off in Grand Tour, it felt great to ride around in the Danish National jersey as I’m standing out from the pack wearing the red and white colours.
The ride through Italy has just started.
The early break was reeled in with over 20 kilometres to the line. I asked Greipel how he was feeling and he said he would try and follow me in the build-up, but he didn’t think he had the strenght to do anything. And he didn’t and as I was in a good position for the sprint I tried to see how far I could take it.
Fillipo Pozzato came shooting up the right hand side with me trying to get in his slipstream. Napolitano and Bonnet closed in on him in the closing metres, but Pozzato took the win and, I, finished 4th. Pretty good for my first Grand Tour stage.
Tomorrow’s finale feature a 1-kilometre climb, which is a perfect springboard for me to go for a stage win. I have some stiff competition though, but it is not the Giro for nothing.

Giro d’Italia – Stage 2
I have had this stage in my mind since Brian told me I was racing the Giro and I can’t think off a more perfectly fitting finale for me than today’s. The road starts to rise with just over 1 kilometre to the line and from 1 kilometre and in it just keeps rising a very high gradient. This is my kind of terrain and if I want to wear the leader’s jersey I have to try something today and you bet I will.
Not much to report from the early phases of the day. A break went away and got caught. As we closed in on the climb, me, Siutsou and Kairelis moved to the front, sitting in the opposite order at the front as we hit the bottom of the climb. It was like hitting a wall. The gradient hit us very sudden and I jostled a bit with my gear before finding a proper setting. With 1,5 kilometres to go Luca Pierfelici and Danilo Di Luca made a move on the left hand side. Me and Siutsou countered.
Pierfelici was very strong, but I flew up in his wheel past Di Luca, with Sioutsou just behind Di Luca. The four of us opened up a gap to Ricco, who had also attacked.
I thought I would sweep past Pierfelici as I had planned to make my move with in the last hundred metres, but he was just so strong and I couldn’t around him as he won the stage with me finishing 2nd, which is quite satisfying nevertheless. Di Luca and Siutsou finished in the same as me and Pierfelici. So this a very good result for Siutsou as he also managed to pass Di Luca in the final metres.
Pierfelici will take over la maglia rosa and Di Luca will move to 2nd in the GC just ahead of Siutsou who has made a perfect start to his Giro. I moved up to 5th in the GC, and with two hilly stages left before we hit the mountains I am eyeing the jersey. I got jersey though as I’m not the leading U25 rider, meaning I will ride in la maglia bianca. Three days into my Grand Tour career and I already have a jersey and it really was huge thing to be up there on the podium to recieve it.

Giro d’Italia – Stage 3
Another flat stage today and I will be riding in the young riders jersey. I’m not far back in the points competition either as I’m only tralining Pozzato by 2 points, so if I do well in the sprint I might be able to wear that jersey aswell. I’ve found out that I’m actually quite well thought here in Italy. Reading La Gazetta this morning in the starting area it seems the Italian press has a great deal of sympathy for me. I guess it’s because of all the bonds I have to Italy. I live in Italy and last season I won two Italian races and now I’m wearing la maglia bianca in the biggest stage race in Italy. It’s always nice to hear good things about yourself and it has really inspired me to go for the leader’s jersey on stage 5 and 6, which are both hilly.
Enjoying the Italian countryside in my white jersey, litterarily eyeing the la maglia rosa up the road.
The breakaway of the day gave us a run for our money as they refused to be reeled in until the 3 kilometres mark.
I tried to be up there to win points jersey. I beat Pozzato but with Napolitano winning the stage I will be 1 point shy of the points jersey. Maybe tomorrow.
I’m still leading the young riders competition by 11 seconds. Nibali is 2nd. Tomorrow is another flat day before two hilly stages. After that we hit the first mountain.

Giro d’Italia – Stage 4
Day 2 in the white jersey and I’m liking the look of it more and more. Tomorrow’s stage is going to be interesting but as I’m just trailing Napolitano by 1 point in the points competition I will definitely try to beat him in the sprint today. I can’t let that chance go by. I still have to sit close to Siutsou and get water bottles at the support car throughout the stage, but in the final 20 kilometres me and Greipel will be released from our domestique obligations to try and pull off a result. We have been close so far with Grabsch taking 2nd place in the prologue and me taking 2nd on stage 2. I’m probably not going to win today but I will try to do so and I will be trying even hard on the next two stages. Count on that. I’ll be up there.
Fast forward to the sprint after acting wind shield for Siutsou, me and Greipel positioned ourselves for sprint. We managed to grab Gavazzi’s wheel (Napolitano’s lead out man), but Napolitano somehow crammed himself into Gavazzi’s wheel with me and Greipel losing a lot of ground because of that little stunt. So we were far back as Gavazzi opened up at the very front.
Napolitano and Vigano worked their ways past Gavazzi, but Rabobank’s Tom Leezer delivered an irresistable sprint and blasted up the middle of the road to take a fantastic win. He was only just ahead of me at the start of the sprint, but somehow managed to come out of nowhere to take a maginificent win. I finished 5th and Greipel is getting stronger as he took 8th on today’s stage to Catanzaro. I kept the white jersey but Leezer has closed in on me as he is now 2nd, just 5 seconds behind.
Later that evening I talked to Brian about tomorrow’s stage and he has given me permission try an attack as long as it won’t affect Siutsou’s GC credentials.

Giro d’Italia – Stage 5
Today is a unique chance for me. A chance to take over the leader’s jersey and if that fails, a chance to take over the points jersey. To take the leader’s jersey I will have to do something on the climbs, because Luca Pierfelici will not be dropped on today’s gradient. The stage features two quite long climbs. They’re not that steep though, so they suit me very well.
After the first climb with 20 kilometres to the next one disaster struck for us though as our team captain, Kanstantin Siutsou hit the deck.
Everybody except me and Craig Lewis were ordered back to pace him back up, but it looks impossible as the pack is really moving fast.
With 65 kilometres to go at the foot of the climb Matthew Lloyd launched an attack which four other riders followed and made up a front group. I would have gone with them, but with Siutsou battling to get pack I was locked in my position.
Mestre, Lloyd, Tschopp, Sarabia and Bertagnolli.
Meanwhile Siutsou had gone solo at the foot of climb and after a fight for 10 kilometres he was back in the pack after a great effort. It goes to show how strong he is right now as he quickly joined me up front. This was my signal to attack, as I tried to bridge up the 1 minute gap the break had on the pack. And I made the junction withouth any big problems and as we crossed the top with about 30 kilometres left, we had 55 seconds on the pack. I’m maglia rosa virtuel right now.
But the pack splashed down the descent and my dreams of taking the jersey were shattered as we were brought back just after breaking the 20 kilometres mark. I decided to take part in the sprint and as Napolitano had been dropped I have the chance to take the point jersey. Tom Leezer, threat to my lead in the young riders competition, was in the pack, but he was long back as the sprint started.
Eros Capecchi of Saunier Duval won the stage, while I finished 4th which was just enough for me take over the points jersey.
So I’m now in maglia cyclam, which is another achievement for me. I’m still 5th in the GC and I have one last chance to win the leader’s jersey on tomorrow’s stage before we hit the mountains on stage 7.
Celebrating another jersey on the podium – this was my 5th time climbing the podium.

Giro d’Italia – Stage 6
Today is my last chance to take the leader’s jersey in this race. At the 40-kilometre mark we hit Montevergine, which tops about 20 kilometres from the line. It’s my chance to attack away from the peloton and take enough time on the current leader, Danilo Di Luca. I am currently leading both the points and the young riders competition, which means I will be riding today’s stage in la maglia cyclam. I really hope I can hold onto it. I know I have no chance keeping the white jersey all the way to Milan, but with my form and my abilities in a sprint I think I stand a little chance to win it.
Enjoying the moment in my new jersey.
As we hit Montevergine the early break was still up ahead, but they were almost reeled in. With 8 kilometres to the summit, Ivan Basso sparked the attacks as he took off with me and Siutsou trying to keep up. Basso was incredibly strong and he stormed into a solo lead going over the top by himself. Trailing him was a duo with Cunego and Siutsou while I was in a 10-man group behind them.
Cunego and Siutsou gained on Basso in the descent but we lost some ground in my group and we weren’t going to catch up. So here ends my dreams of la maglia rosa for this time. Basso wouldn’t be stopped though as he won the stage just as Cunego and Siutsou bridged up to him.
Now to the good news. Because of Siutsou’s position in the GC before this stage and the fact he only lost out on some boni seconds on Basso and Cunego, he is now the new race leader! I’ve fell back into 6th position, but that will be worse after tomorrow’s mountain stage. I’m still wearing the points jersey and leading the young riders competition, so I have something to be happy about.

Giro d’Italia – Stage 7
The illusion will collapse today. The illusion of me being a GC rider. I’m currently sitting 6th in the GC at just over a minute with my team captain, Kanstantin Siutsou sitting at the very first spot. We are now the leaders, and with being the leaders goes responsibility. We had to put some guys at the front today to control the breakaways. I was sitting with Siutsou the whole day though alongside Kairelis and Lewis, while the others were at the front. The only climb today is the final climb to Campitello Matese, which is about 15 kilometres.
Medina of Astana was the first rider to attack on the final climb and he went into a solo lead. Siutsou tried to bridge up but he was reeled in by the pack again when Cunego, Basso, Soler and Nibali all went clear. None of them would rider together though as they would trail Medina in the order I mentioned above. I tried to stay with the pack where Siutsou now was pulling himself, but it was tough hanging on.
Medina put in a great ride and he took the win, but he wouldn’t take the leader’s jersey as that now belongs to Damiano Cunego after he took 2nd on the stage managing to hold off Ivan Basso and even gain time on him. Siutsou lead in the pack at 3’05, so he has lost his race lead unfortuneately. I will keep my lead in the points competition and I will drop to 12th in the GC ahead of tomorrow’s long time trial.

Giro d’Italia – Stage 8
I knew this day would come. It will inevitable come when riding a Grand Tour, but I don’t look forward to it at all. 50 kilometres of time trial awaits me and the other 189 riders today and I might drop out of the Top 20 today, because this is just not my thing. My position in the GC isn’t important to us though, as all we care about there is Siutsou who lost some time yesterday and has to redeem himself today.
Bert Grabsch was our big hope today, but he couldn’t keep the same pace as he did on the prologue as he had to settle for 18th on the stage. I was the 12th last rider to take off and I really felt I gave it a good go out there today. I was substantially behind on the two intermediate checks, but I finished off very strong and as I crossed the line and looked back over my shoulder, the digital number on the finish line said 28th! With other riders still to come I knew I would drop back a little, but this was no doubt the time trial of my life. Couldn’t have come at a better time.
Siutsou on the other hand didn’t have a good day he was faster than me on all the checks, but at the line he was actually slower than me. He told me after wards that he hit the wall in the final 5 kilometres and lost a lot of time there. Unfortuneately he will fall back in the GC.
Today’s winner was in his own league the whole day and was too on stage 6. Yes, CSC captain Ivan Basso took a convincing win today and he is now the leader of the Giro d’Italia. He has also taken over the points jersey, but I will still ride in it as he will be wearing rosa.
The new best U25 rider, Vincenzo Nibali took 4th in the time trial.
Ivan Basso is the new race leader after a huge performance.
Tomorrow we have a flat stage before we hit into the mountains again.

Giro d’Italia – Stage 9
It’s flat today before we hit another mountain stage tomorrow. I’m trailing Basso by just a few points in the points competition and will look to pull those points back in the sprint. But guys like Pozzato and Napolitano aren’t far behind either so I will have to look out for them.
After we had sent off Burghardt in today’s break, consisting of 4 riders, I took some time to talk with Chris Anker Sørensen, who is not in the least pleased with how the Giro has been for him and his team. His captain Brajkovic is way behind on GC following his win on the prologue and he hasn’t done well in the mountains like he had hoped to do. There has only been one mountain stage so far, so surely he has a chance to redeem himself. Apparently he isn’t comfortable at Astana, and as we’re looking for a good climber at High Road I might recommend him to the management, but I think Brian is already following Chris intently.
Anyway, the break with Burghardt was reeled in with 25 kilometres to go and from there on in he just strolled home in a low tempo, so he could still be fresh to go for a stage win at some point. The sprint didn’t work out well for me. I caught Leezer’s wheel in the sprint, but suddenly lost it right before the sprint and I found myself in a horrible position. I fought on though and managed to salvage a 7th place. Leezer came from way to take the stage, while Pozzato took enough points to be the new points leader. I’m 2 points behind him.

Giro d’Italia – Stage 10
The second mountain stage and I’m really starting to feel all the racing in my legs. I knew it would take an effort to pull through this race since it’s my first Grand Tour, but it’s just so much tougher than I though. My morale is high though and I still want to go for a stage win. I’ll definitely have a go at it on stage 15, but I need to take a decision as to what I want to do about the GC. I have a good chance to finish inside the top 20, but if I keep digging deep in the mountains, the pack won’t let me attack on any of the stages, because I could be a threat to other Top 10 riders. So on stage 14 to Monte Zoncolan, I might fall through completely on purpose. I will give it a go today though up the Terminillo climb, which is a lot worse than the other mountain to Campetello Matese we rode a few stages back.
Again it was all about Siutsou who dropped to 10th in the GC on the time trial. He can’t match the Italians however, as he had to settle for 9th on the stage, 3’42 behind Ivan Basso, who took the stage after pulling away from Nibali, Ricco and Cunego in the final kilometre to consolidate his overall lead.
I just fell off the 30-man pack at the end of the stage. Still a pretty good ride I think.

Giro d’Italia – Stage 11
A long flat stage today. 235 kilometres. This is one of the things I’m good at too. I’m not the best sprinter in a bunch sprint, but after a long, strenous day, I have a bit more to shoot with compared to a lot of the big guys and since André still isn’t completely up for the challenge today I’ll have a crack at it. If there’s a sprint of course.
Burghardt desperately tried to get in the break but all his attempts were cancelled out. Insted Christian Knees got in the break consisting of 7 riders. Unfortuneately for him they were brought back in. Fortuneate for me, since I had diamond legs today and I found a decent spot for the sprint. Also I managed to win a jostle with Napolitano for the wheel I got into.
The Lampre train on the left was strong and Cucinotta benefitted from this as he shot right into the lead. I tried to go with him and I was coming up pretty strong, distancing all the other sprinters. I got closer and closer and I though I actually had a chance at this one. But I ran out of road and Cucinotta took the win. I finished 3rd though and I will now wear the points jersey again. I’m not leading the points competition, but Basso is and he can’t wear it because he wears the leader’s jersey. So I’m back in business. Tomorrow I can win it back completely if we have another mass sprint.
