Giro dell'Emilia

This race had some solid riders in it, with guys like Barredo, Sella, Di Luca, Rebellin and Kroon taking part.

We tagged Di Luca as the man to watch, and Linus stayed on his wheel when he made his move. Gerdemann just couldn't pass him at the finish line though, so we took a strong second.

A late season race, we were hoping Gerdemann could make some moves on the late hills and steal a podium.

Unfortunately, nobody seemed real keen on chasing the break down. Eventually we did what we could, but it was too little too late. Matej Jurco takes a suprise win.

Giro di Lombardia

This race is set up well for Linus. Unfortunately, the day was extremely wild, as people would attack in waves. Linus picked a promising attack late in the race... but it wasn't the right choice and was caught. When the pivotal attack came a short while later he couldn't go with them.

Bertagnolli wins the race, ahead of Bettini and Cunego.

Chrono des Nations les Herbiers

i239.photobucket.com/albums/ff235/gumbyman21/80-1pro.jpg

Our last race of the year, we only have Linus Gerdemann and Bradley Wiggins taking part. We really just wanted the opportunity to show off the world championship jersey of Wiggins.

Gerdemann set a time well ahead of the nearest competitor. It was clear early on that the only one who might beat Linus was his teammate.

Wiggins looked great in his jersey early on.

i239.photobucket.com/albums/ff235/gumbyman21/80-1a.jpg

And Wiggins absolutely blew up the field. Having already passed one rider, Bradley was set to pass two more as he approached the finish line.

i239.photobucket.com/albums/ff235/gumbyman21/80-1b.jpg

Wiggins wins easily... by a minute and a half over Gerdemann. A nice High Road 1-2 to finish the season up.

Very nice riding are you going for another year, or transferring to 08

I'll keep going for a bit. I don't have '08 yet. Not sure I'll get another full season in though... interest in '07 stories seems to be waning a bit with '08 being out.

2008 Season Wrap up

It's been a great year for Team High Road. We've had some great results, including a win in the Vuelta, 3rd in the Giro and 5th in the Tour. We won the Pro Tour team standings by a wide margin, and Kim Kirchen won the individual rankings. We've also secured some top flight talent, most noticeably Alberto Contador, to lead our team forward next season.

Individual Pro Tour rankings:

i239.photobucket.com/albums/ff235/gumbyman21/2007-ind-rank.jpg

Milram and Cofidis finished in the bottom two spots of the Pro Tour rankings and face relegation.

i239.photobucket.com/albums/ff235/gumbyman21/2007-team-rank.jpg

Meanwhile, in the continental tour, Slipstream won comfortably. In a close race for second, Barloworld just edged out LPR to get promoted to the pro-tour. Several top LPR rider excercised outs in their contracts to move to a better team (including our own George Hincapie who had signed there in the transfer season).

i239.photobucket.com/albums/ff235/gumbyman21/2007-cont-team-rank.jpg

Candido Barbosa led cycling with 21 victories. Tom Boonen and Kim Kirchen tied for the lead amongst pro-tour riders with 11 each.

Season recap:

And High Road Sponsors were very pleased. Below is a list of all the High Road accomplishments the sponsors liked particularly well.

Sorry... that last one doesn't look like it does on my computer when I edited it together. I'll try to fix it.

2009 Season Preview

Well, after last year we have some serious expectations from our sponsors. I think we have the team to do it though.

i239.photobucket.com/albums/ff235/gumbyman21/2009-goal.jpg

So... we need to win the Giro and The Tour. Can we do it? Well with this team we think we can.

i239.photobucket.com/albums/ff235/gumbyman21/2009-team.jpg

We led Morris Possoni go in transfer season hoping to land a top american or british rider. Unfortunately, we were rejected across the board, and we signed a young Colombian sprinter instead.

Our team is much more built toward stage races this season... we let go alot of our support riders for the northern classics.

Our general plan:
-Alberto Contador will be our man to win Paris-Nice and the Tour de France.
-Diego Ulissi will be the team leader in the Giro d'Italia, with Fabio Duarte as our "1B" option.
-Marcus Burghardt and Bernhard Eisel will lead the cobbled classics.
-Kim Kirchen will focus first on the Ardennes Classics... then on being our "1B" option for the Tour.
-Sergio Louis Henao will be our Vuelta leader, with John Devine as "1B"
-Gerdemann and Rogers will definitely ride the Tour... we think this will give us a dominant team in the mountains.
-Pinotti and Siutsou will definitely ride the Giro.
-Lewis will ride support in the Vuelta.
-Lovkvist and Boom's plans are largely undecided.

For the sprinters: Eisel will ride the Tour... but other than that we are completely uncommitted. Cavendish will be racing early in the season, hopefully to take a good result from the Tour Down Under.

Top teams for 2009:

Some of the teams competing for the pro tour championship:

i239.photobucket.com/albums/ff235/gumbyman21/2009-caisse.jpg

Valverde is backed by a strong supporting cast of climbers. Bit weak on the cobbles and lacking a dominant sprinter, but otherwise very strong.

i239.photobucket.com/albums/ff235/gumbyman21/2009-quick.jpg

They're no longer a sprint team. Boonen and Steegmans will win their share of sprints, and they're still probably the premier cobbled team... but with guys like Di Luca and Nibali added, Quickstep will make themselves known in the stage races as well.

i239.photobucket.com/albums/ff235/gumbyman21/2009-rabo.jpg

Gesink has quickly turned into one of the premier climbers in cycling. Menchov and Dekker are great as well, and adding guys like Augustyn and Anton gives even more options. Chavanel will do well in the hilly tours, Flecha and Langveld will compete on the cobbles, and Friere is still the best sprinter around. This is a COMPLETE team.

i239.photobucket.com/albums/ff235/gumbyman21/2009-astana.jpg

Lost Contador... but added Sastre to cushion the blow. Still a bit weak in the sprints, and Gusev is the only real cobbled threat, but Astana is still a force.

i239.photobucket.com/albums/ff235/gumbyman21/2009-csc.jpg

The Schlecks will lead this group with Sastre gone, and adding Pelizotti will cushion his loss. A dominant cobbled team led by Cancellera, and Haedo has turned into a top sprinter. Another complete unit that will be in every race.

Upper level teams for 2009:

These teams will do well but probably don't have the makeup to win the pro-tour.

i239.photobucket.com/albums/ff235/gumbyman21/2009-silence.jpg

Silence-Lotto is very good... but they just don't have the climbers after Evans and Popovych. Even adding Sanchez just doesn't put them there. They've got a good cobbled squad led by Hoste, and have added Alan Davis and Aaron Kemps to keep their heritage of Australian sprinters now that McEwen is gone. Great team that just doesn't have the climbers to win the pro-tour.

i239.photobucket.com/albums/ff235/gumbyman21/2009-saunier.jpg

An outstanding mountain team, but without good time trialing, cobbled riding or sprinting they're looking only to compete in specific types of races.

i239.photobucket.com/albums/ff235/gumbyman21/2009-liquigas.jpg

A great team... everywhere except the mountains. They could dominate the cobbled season.

i239.photobucket.com/albums/ff235/gumbyman21/2009-euskatel.jpg

Solid climbers, no cobbles, ho-hum in the sprints. They'll score some points from some climbing oriented stage races we think.

KurtinSC
Mid level teams:

These guys won't be awesome, but should be safe from relegation too.

i239.photobucket.com/albums/ff235/gumbyman21/2009-barloworld.jpg

Despite just arriving on the pro-tour, Barloworld doesn't seem to be in any danger of relegation. Soler will get them some points, as will Hunter in the sprints. While there isn't a lot there beyond those two, they'll be enough.

i239.photobucket.com/albums/ff235/gumbyman21/2009-bouy.jpg

Similar to Barloworld, excpet the names are Trofimov and Haddou. They do have a bit more depth with guys like Fredrigo and TT's like CHampion.

i239.photobucket.com/albums/ff235/gumbyman21/2009-fdj.jpg

Gilbert will be their main point guy and things might get rough if he gets injured. They have some okay hilly riders as well, and Chavanel is solid in the sprints.

i239.photobucket.com/albums/ff235/gumbyman21/2009-gerol.jpg

Gerolsteiner should be solid all around. Schumacher, Fothen, Kreuziger and Rebellin will easily keep them from relegation.

i239.photobucket.com/albums/ff235/gumbyman21/2009-lampre.jpg

Cunego will win some stage races. Ballan will do well on the cobbles. Napolitano will win some sprints. But other than that... there isn't much there.

i239.photobucket.com/albums/ff235/gumbyman21/2009-slip.jpg

The other new pro-tour team seems pretty safe as well. While they probably won't win any pro-tour races, they'll be in the top 10 enough.

KurtinSC
Bottom rung teams:

These are the guys likely to be fighting to avoid relegation. Okay... these guys will probably be relegated regardless.

i239.photobucket.com/albums/ff235/gumbyman21/2009-ca.jpg

Well... you have Thor. After that you have.... well at least you have Thor.

i239.photobucket.com/albums/ff235/gumbyman21/2009-ag2r.jpg

Unless they plan their seasons around the less contested pro-tour races, I just don't see them staying up. Gadret or Nocentini could keep them afloat and push a Barloworld or Bouygues down instead... but I'm betting on AG2R getting demoted.

KurtinSC
Okay... time for the 2009 season to start. We'll be upping the difficulty to extreme. Hopefully the team I've built is strong enough to achieve the goals the sponsors have set even at that difficulty level.

Jelajah Malaysia - Stage 1

Why are we riding in this race? Well two reasons... first we wanted Cavendish to get some preparation for the Tour Down Under... and second Nico Keinath wanted to ride here. We also crashed a lot in last year's Bay City race... so that scared us off.

The team is mostly younger guys, with Burghardt, Sieberg and Cavendish providing the experience.

The team:
Leader: Oscar Sanchez - Youngster is our only real climber here.
Sprinter - Mark Cavendish
Free: Marcus Burghardt
Teammate: Marcel Sieberg, Nico Keinath, Jarlinson Pantano

i239.photobucket.com/albums/ff235/gumbyman21/2009-1-1pro.jpg

The first stage (like most of the stages in this year's race) is designed for sprinters. The sprint field is light, so we'll have to work to pull everything back in... Cav is a huge favorite.

We pulled everything back in and set up a train for Cav.

i239.photobucket.com/albums/ff235/gumbyman21/2009-1-1a.jpg

And Cav launches out perfectly and takes the win. Sieberg isn't able to hold on for a podium spot unfortunately.

Cav will get to test his legs again today.

Again we worked hard bringing the break back in and then set up our train of Burghardt, Sieberg then Cavendish. And again it worked. Cav sprinted past with impressive speen and Sieberg caught his wheel and rode it to second place. A nice 1-2 for the team.

Jelajah Malaysia - Stage 3

i239.photobucket.com/albums/ff235/gumbyman21/2009-1-3pro.jpg

Again we worked to bring the break back. Unfortunately this time we couldn't get our train formed. As the sprint began, Cav was boxed in pretty badly back in the pack and Sieberg couldn't lead him out.

i239.photobucket.com/albums/ff235/gumbyman21/2009-1-3a.jpg

Cav fought his way out though. About 900m to go and he's within striking distance. He's had to work hard to get this close though... can he pull ahead?

i239.photobucket.com/albums/ff235/gumbyman21/2009-1-3b.jpg

Yes he can! Cavendish edges out Obst at the line. Three in a row for the High Road sprinter.
