Mallorca Challenge (1.1)
First up is the Trofeo Palma, traditionally the only chance for the pure sprinters. Surprisingly none of them have put this first race on their schedule, a perfect chance thus for the sprinters of the second row.
While Spanish champion Ion Izagirre seems to be enjoying his first racing kilometers with us, a group attacks against its better judgment.
The breakaway doesn't stand a chance and then Navardauskas shows once again he's got a thing for riding hard on flat roads. His attack last exactly long enough to keep a very strong Manuel Martínez behind him. Credits to Carlos Barbero as well for a great leadout.
The route of Trofeo Alcudia makes this a far less predictable one. Some demanding climbs which may or may not be close enough to the finish to be decisive, all depends on how aggressive the pack will be.
After a fast start finally Hector Saez is allowed to attack, along with Roompot's Piotr Havik. Hector's pace on the climbs soon turns out to be too hot for Havik. Ten kilometers to go, Saez is reeled in as well.
A last minute attack from Izagirre is neutralised just in front of the line and the surprising sprint winner is Tinkoff's Daniel Teklehaimanot. 1 | | Ramunas Navardauskas | Team Dimension Data | 2h05'36" | 2 | | Manuel Martínez | Ruralvía - Seguros RGA | s.t. | 3 | | Ben Swift | Team Sky | s.t. | 4 | | Raymond Kreder | Team LottoNL - Jumbo | s.t. | 5 | | Carlos Barbero | Ruralvía - Seguros RGA | s.t. | 6 | | Lluis Mas Bonet | Team Sky | s.t. | 7 | | Marco Haller | Team Dimension Data | s.t. | 8 | | Eduard-Michael Grosu | Bora - Argon 18 | s.t. | 9 | | Nicola Ruffoni | Movistar Team | s.t. | 10 | | Edward Theuns | Lotto Soudal | s.t. |

Mallorca Challenge (1.1) - part 2
Third race of the series is Trofeo Pollença, finishing at the peninsula in the very northeast of the island. After two main climbs halfway the race will be decided at the Mirador des Colomer climb at the end.
In the breakaway, our team is represented by Omar Fraile. He's on the road with fellow Basques Jon Insausti and former team mate Amets Txurruka. Last one is Dimension Data's Frenchman Renaud Bailly.
Txurruka's dropped first but eventually no-one in out front stands a chance against the motivated pack. At the Mirador des Colomer, Izagirre still seems to be pedalling comfortably going under the red kite.
He'll have to keep an eye on the Giant duo of Zakarin - Goos though, as now they're overtaking him with less than 1 kilometer to go.
In the end Izagirre takes a slightly less comfortable win over uphill finish specialist Alexis Vuillermoz. Zakarin completes the podium as Intxausti finishes in fifth in his first race of the year.
Trofeo Soller is the race with the toughest looking profile, with climbs to conquer right after the start. With no big guns at the start, a lot of climbers will have their mind fixed on this particular race.
Ochoa starts his season with a day out front, together with Bennati and former Caja Rural rider Miguel Angel Benito.
But quickly enough, an aggresively racing bunch reels in everyone several splits occur. Only Izagirre remains in the first group, but he's still feeling sore after yesterday's race.
Luckily the pace is somewhat lowered and a lot of our riders manage to come back. None of them have returned without having to fight to be able to do so though.
In the long descent Juan Andres Pardo Calvo sneaks away, and despite the pressure of New Zealand's champion George Bennett, Pardo wins showing he's much more than just another Spanish breakaway specialist.
For us, Chávarri shows his good legs at the very last short climb and his gap allows him to take third, as Ion Izagirre finishes only a few places down.
Last but not least is Trofeo Calvia, another unpredictable bumpy ride. Our plan is to skip this breakaway in order to try to keep our sprinters Martínez and Barbero close to the front.
But our plan fails thanks to an extremely high pace set as soon as the harder climbs arrive. Everyone of our team is dropped, except for Bilbao and Intxausti. The reduced pack slows down...
and suddenly Intxausti relays and accelerates, trying to lead out Bilbao and together they surprise all the other riders. A great 1-2 for Ruralvía - Seguros RGA. 1 | | Ion Izagirre | Ruralvía - Seguros RGA | 4h17'31" | 2 | | Alexis Vuillermoz | Team Dimension Data | s.t. | 3 | | Ilnur Zakarin | Team Giant-Alpecin | + 3" | 4 | | Julian Arredondo | BMC Racing Team | + 11" | 5 | | Beñat Intxausti | Ruralvía - Seguros RGA | + 15" | 6 | | Marc Goos | Team Giant-Alpecin | s.t. | 7 | | Nicolas Roche | Lotto Soudal | s.t. | 8 | | Paweł Poljański | Team Dimension Data | + 21" | 9 | | Joaquím Rodríguez | Tinkoff-Saxo | s.t. | 10 | | Stéphane Rossetto | AG2R La Mondiale | s.t. |

Herald Sun Tour (2.1)
The race starts with a short, flat prologue in the streets of Melbourne. A disappointing stage for us as our top finisher is Vandenborre, finishing in 26th, having ridden 6" slower than stage winner Hepburn. 1 | | Michael Hepburn | IAM Cycling | 3'42" | 2 | | Timo Roosen | Team Smartstop | + 2" | 3 | | Leigh Howard | Orica-GreenEDGE | s.t. | 4 | | Thomas De Gendt | Lotto Soudal | s.t. | 5 | | Edward Theuns | Lotto Soudal | s.t. | 6 | | Travis Meyer | Orica-GreenEDGE | + 3" | 7 | | Matthias Plarre | Bora - Argon 18 | s.t. | 8 | | Damien Howson | Lotto Soudal | s.t. | 9 | | Reinardt J. V. Rensburg | FDJ | s.t. | 10 | | Harry Carpenter | Team Budget Forklifts | s.t. |
The first flat stage includes a tricky uphill finish that might suit the punchers better than the pure sprinters.
Unfortunately our two sprinters are boxed in when they try to come to the front. Co-leaders Vandenborre and Ochoa race attentively and both finish within the top 10, in the same time as stage winner Grosu. 1 | | Eduard-Michael Grosu | Bora - Argon 18 | 2h54'31" | 2 | | Tom Van Asbroeck | Trek - Segafredo | s.t. | 3 | | Edward Theuns | Lotto Soudal | s.t. | 4 | | Michael Valgren | Tinkoff-Saxo | s.t. | 5 | | Kristian Sbaragli | Bora - Argon 18 | s.t. | 6 | | Andris Smirnovs | Gazprom - Rusvelo | s.t. | 7 | | Diego Ochoa | Ruralvía - Seguros RGA | s.t. | 8 | | Gerry Druyts | Topsport Vlaanderen - Baloise | s.t. | 9 | | Mike Teunissen | Team LottoNL - Jumbo | s.t. | 10 | | Sam Vandenborre | Ruralvía - Seguros RGA | s.t. |
The third stage included a short non-steep hill right within the sprint preparation. But still a full bunch sprint was to be expected.
Diego Ochoa tried to last minute attack just over the top but his attack did not last. Stage winner was Rick Zabel, who finally seems to have become a sprinter who can win. Our main sprinter Manuel Martínez grabbed a 6th place. 1 | | Rick Zabel | Orica-GreenEDGE | 4h00'43" | 2 | | Tom Van Asbroeck | Trek - Segafredo | s.t. | 3 | | Michael Kolar | FDJ | s.t. | 4 | | Andris Smirnovs | Gazprom - Rusvelo | s.t. | 5 | | Edward Theuns | Lotto Soudal | s.t. | 6 | | Manuel Martínez | Ruralvía - Seguros RGA | s.t. | 7 | | Gerry Druyts | Topsport Vlaanderen - Baloise | s.t. | 8 | | Eduard-Michael Grosu | Bora - Argon 18 | s.t. | 9 | | Diego Ochoa | Ruralvía - Seguros RGA | s.t. | 10 | | Lilian Calmejane | AG2R La Mondiale | s.t. |
The most flat stage was the last chance for the sprinters, as most probably they won't strike in the final stage which contains 3 ascents of Arthur's Seat.
Finally Tinajero managed to lead out Martínez properly, but again Manuel would have to settle for second, losing the bunch sprint against Rick Zabel. 1 | | Rick Zabel | Orica-GreenEDGE | 3h29'54" | 2 | | Manuel Martínez | Ruralvía - Seguros RGA | s.t. | 3 | | Eduard-Michael Grosu | Bora - Argon 18 | s.t. | 4 | | Andris Smirnovs | Gazprom - Rusvelo | s.t. | 5 | | Boris Vallée | Lotto Soudal | s.t. | 6 | | Tom Van Asbroeck | Trek - Segafredo | s.t. | 7 | | Michael Kolar | FDJ | s.t. | 8 | | Edward Theuns | Lotto Soudal | s.t. | 9 | | Gerry Druyts | Topsport Vlaanderen - Baloise | s.t. | 10 | | Willy Willwohl | Bora - Argon 18 | s.t. |
GC before the queen stage 1 | | Rick Zabel | Orica-GreenEDGE | 10h28'37" | 2 | | Eduard-Michael Grosu | Bora - Argon 18 | + 5" | 3 | | Tom Van Asbroeck | Trek - Segafredo | + 6" | 4 | | Edward Theuns | Lotto Soudal | + 11" | 5 | | Michael Hepburn | IAM Cycling | + 13" | 6 | | Thomas De Gendt | Lotto Soudal | + 15" | 7 | | Gianluca Brambilla | Astana Pro Team | + 16" | 8 | | Damien Howson | Lotto Soudal | s.t. | 9 | | Georg Preidler | IAM Cycling | + 17" | 10 | | Claudio Imhof | IAM Cycling | s.t. | … | … | … | … | … | 13 | | Manuel Martínez | Ruralvía - Seguros RGA | + 18" |

Great podium for Manuel Martínez.
GC seems to be wide open, for the final stage.

Martínez is certainly becoming a solid sprinter, maybe the best one out there in South America. Too bad he still hasn't won. Anyway we'll certainly have a hard time renewing his contract.
The GC indeed is undecided so far, go Diego and Sam!

Herald Sun Tour - conclusion
Three times the Arthur's Seat climb. A Wilunga Hill-like stage. The last difficulty of this year's Herald Sun Tour. A breakaway seemed to be ruled out even before this stage had even started.
Still, quite a lot of riders tried their luck. Among them were former Colombian champion Miguel Rubiano, Russia's veteran Mikhail Ignatiev and Tim Roe.
The group got scattered at the second climb of Arthur's Seat. Only a few guys out front would make it over the top without being reeled in. But the pack was way too eager to grant them anything.
Sam Vandenborre sacrificed his own GC ambitions to drop off Ochoa near the front. And the Colombian managed to stay there, close to co-favourites Betancur, Brambilla and Ledanois.
Being a little far back, Ochoa had to deliver a very strong sprint for the stage win, but Ledanois just had that little more in the legs that day. Another second place it was for us, which allowed Ochoa to climb to 3rd in the general classification, as Ledanois logically won the race too.

Vuelta a Murcia (1.1)
The route looks a bit different compared to the one of last year's edition, when Intxausti destroyed his opponents as he tamed the final hill on his own.
Chávarri joined a duo to create a three-man breakaway. At the longest climb of the race, Boris Vallée couldn't keep up with Eder Chávarri and our former teammate Lluis Mas Bonet. Mas Bonet was dropped too but he came back in the descent.
Even before the final hill both realised there was no point in trying today. That's where the race would be decided.
Purito Rodríguez is the first to attack, as Izagirre tries to follow. But he fails to do so and over the top only Vuillermoz and Oomen have been able to join Purito.
Their attack was close to being neutralised, but one of them still had one card to play...
... and Vuillermoz timed his attack perfectly. He rode to today's win on his own. Behind, Barbero started his sprint early and he held on for second. 1 | | Alexis Vuillermoz | Team Dimension Data | 4h41'43" | 2 | | Carlos Barbero | Ruralvía - Seguros RGA | + 32" | 3 | | Edward Theuns | Lotto Soudal | s.t. | 4 | | Egor Silin | Tinkoff-Saxo | s.t. | 5 | | Gijs Van Hoecke | Lotto Soudal | s.t. | 6 | | Jay McCarthy | LA Aluminios - Antarte | s.t. | 7 | | Jan Hirt | AG2R La Mondiale | s.t. | 8 | | Miguel Angel Lopez | Team Dimension Data | s.t. | 9 | | Gianni Meersman | Trek - Segafredo | s.t. | 10 | | Ion Izagirre | Ruralvía - Seguros RGA | s.t. |

Clásica de Almeria (1.1)
Our last race before the Algarve / Andalucía combo turned out to be a huge disappointment, as Barbero grabbed the wrong wheel and got boxed in, finishing in 28th. Volta ao Algarve (2.1)
A relatively easy stage to start with. Nothing noteworthy had happened until the preparation of sprint started.
Lotto's and Giant's trains just destroyed the pack and in the end the sprint came down to a battle between Belgium's and Germany's champion, with Kittel winning over Stuyven. Behind, Zurlo won the peleton sprint as he was allowed to sprint for himself after Barbero had lost the Italian's wheel. 1 | | Marcel Kittel | Team Giant-Alpecin | 4h12'24" | 2 | | Jasper Stuyven | Lotto Soudal | s.t. | 3 | | Tiesj Benoot | Lotto Soudal | s.t. | 4 | | Federico Zurlo | Ruralvía - Seguros RGA | + 42" | 5 | | Michael Matthews | Orica-GreenEDGE | s.t. | 6 | | Sébastien Turgot | AG2R La Mondiale | s.t. | 7 | | Carlos Barbero | Ruralvía - Seguros RGA | s.t. | 8 | | Jay McCarthy | LA Aluminios - Antarte | s.t. | 9 | | Patrick Clausen | CULT Energy Pro Cycling | s.t. | 10 | | Lachlan Morton | Orica-GreenEDGE | s.t. |

Ruta del Sol (2.1)
A very hard time trial to start with. Despite having stated that he didn't feel to well, Ion had the best time at the intermediate point,. He took it rather easy in the descent and held on to a great third place, after Alaphilippe and stage winner Porte. stage results & overall standings 1 | | Richie Porte | Lotto Soudal | 37'27" | 2 | | Julian Alaphilippe | Etixx - Quick-step | + 5" | 3 | | Ion Izagirre | Ruralvía - Seguros RGA | + 9" | 4 | | Cameron Meyer | Etixx - Quick-step | + 13" | 5 | | Rohan Dennis | Team Sky | s.t. | 6 | | Luke Durbridge | Cannondale Pro Cycling Team | + 19" | 7 | | Ryan Mullen | Team Sky | + 22" | 8 | | Joey Rosskopf | Cannondale Pro Cycling Team | + 32" | 9 | | Fabio Felline | Bora - Argon 18 | + 34" | 10 | | Bob Jungels | Tinkoff-Saxo | + 40" |
