In addition to my message one or two pages ago, about TTT skills, I'll quote Fred Grappe (FDJeux coach).
13 main factors that rule TTT performances :
1) Target intensity
2) Position of riders in the line
3) (TT) Bike handling skills
4) Ability to relay properly
5) Duration of relays for each rider
6) Linearity of the effort during relays
7) Ability to recuperate while sitting in the wheels
8) VO2 max
9) SCx/m² (aka bike + rider aerodynamics)
10) Leadership within the team
11) Choice of a proper material
12) Linearity of efforts during ascents/flat/descents
13) Optimal number of RPM
