A Tale of Two

Kuurne - Brussel - Kuurne

i1248.photobucket.com/albums/hh490/IanButlerPCM/kuurnebrusselkuurne01.jpg

Would the world champion be able to defend his win here in Kuurne? Or would we try to keep this win here in the team?

Stijn Van Gent

It was a rainy day again, and only between 0 - 1° C, so a hard day to race. Vandenbergh took a pretty bad fall and will be out for months. The most optimistic viewpoint is that he'll return just in time for Paris - Roubaix.

i1248.photobucket.com/albums/hh490/IanButlerPCM/kuurnebrusselkuurne02.jpg

The World Champion, Greipel, seemed in a pretty good shape. We noticed that Saxo Bank is building a very strong team, with Contador (who'll ride the Tour this year), Greipel, Steegmans and Seeldraeyers.

i1248.photobucket.com/albums/hh490/IanButlerPCM/kuurnebrusselkuurne03.jpg

I nearly fell when Bookwalter hit the ground. I was just able to avoid his bike, but it was close!

i1248.photobucket.com/albums/hh490/IanButlerPCM/kuurnebrusselkuurne04.jpg

After the final cobbled section, we had four riders left in a medium-sized peloton. Willems, Bak, Roelandts and I. Because of my illness and just to play on the safe side, we put all our cards on Roelandts today.

i1248.photobucket.com/albums/hh490/IanButlerPCM/kuurnebrusselkuurne05.jpg

Stijn Devolder, now riding for Radioschak, tried to surprise the peloton and avoid a mass sprint. For a minute there, it seems like it was working.

i1248.photobucket.com/albums/hh490/IanButlerPCM/kuurnebrusselkuurne06.jpg

But then we came with the big guns, setting up a decent sprint train for Roelandts.

i1248.photobucket.com/albums/hh490/IanButlerPCM/kuurnebrusselkuurne07.jpg

And it only got better when Roelandts finished off all our hard work! What a victory! I finish 10th, and that's better than my result of last year, so I'm not complaining.

It's been a hard day and a bad start of the season for the team, so we're extremely glad about that first win of the season. Hopefully this is a sign that everything will be better now!

My next race is in Paris - Nice, but Eric will be here first, for Strade Bianchi.

Faillu
Good ride. Nice win with Roelandts. Wink

Thanks, we're glad to hold the victory in Kuurne, even if it's with another rider Wink

Strade Bianche

Eric Lombaerts

i1248.photobucket.com/albums/hh490/IanButlerPCM/stradebianche01.jpg

Roelandts was our biggest hope today, so I decided to help him by getting into the breakaway of the day.

i1248.photobucket.com/albums/hh490/IanButlerPCM/stradebianche02.jpg

They reeled me back in and I went again, this time on the typical white roads. It's harder to react for a peloton on those small roads.

i1248.photobucket.com/albums/hh490/IanButlerPCM/stradebianche04.jpg

I joined a group of four that hadn't been reeled in and we formed the breakaway of the day.

i1248.photobucket.com/albums/hh490/IanButlerPCM/stradebianche05.jpg
i1248.photobucket.com/albums/hh490/IanButlerPCM/stradebianche06.jpg
i1248.photobucket.com/albums/hh490/IanButlerPCM/stradebianche07.jpg

Nearing the end, I felt like I had a chance. I kinda felt like Gilbert in 2011, my legs could do anything! So I went.

i1248.photobucket.com/albums/hh490/IanButlerPCM/stradebianche08.jpg

I took along two riders and we were heading straight for the finish line.

i1248.photobucket.com/albums/hh490/IanButlerPCM/stradebianche09.jpg

Unfortunately, we got caught in the final 2km, victory was so close!

Van Avermaet passed me with an incredible sprint and I was unable to follow him, I ended up on the 9th place, which is still pretty good, considering I was in the attack all day.

This promises for Tirreno, I'm hoping for a top 10 place again, maybe even more!

Tomorrow, Stijn starts in Paris - Nice, with the prologue. Knowing Stijn, he will give it his all to get a stage win there! I wish him the best of luck.

TomC
Wow! I wasn't here for a week and you're already in March 2013! Good luck in Tirreno Grin

Ian Butler
I hope you'll be able to catch up on the story Grin
Thanks! (you'll see their schedule on the previous page, if you're interested, and the first post has been updated with their main results of 2012)

Paris - Nice - Stage 1

Stijn Van Gent

i1248.photobucket.com/albums/hh490/IanButlerPCM/parisnicestage101.jpg

We are mainly here for Jurgen, to get him to beat Wiggins, who is an expert on one-week tours. But I"m also here for a stage win, I know I can do it! I'm fully recovered now and ready for action.

I raced a decent prologue, I think, and ended 20th.

not the best start for team but it will sure get better with Stijn going to Paris-Nice and Eric to Tirreno Wink

Paris - Nice - Stage 2

Stijn Van Gent

i1248.photobucket.com/albums/hh490/IanButlerPCM/Parisnicestage201.jpg

Well, this as flat as they come, so if I want a stage win here, this would be my best shot. The other profiles are much more hilly and less to my liking.

I had a great lead-out train, with Stannard, Bak and Meersman.

i1248.photobucket.com/albums/hh490/IanButlerPCM/Parisnicestage202.jpg

But Rabobank showed off their power with an impressively large sprint train.

i1248.photobucket.com/albums/hh490/IanButlerPCM/Parisnicestage203.jpg

Rabobank was a bit faster and with 1km left to go, I was in 5th position, I still had a great shot at the win!

i1248.photobucket.com/albums/hh490/IanButlerPCM/Parisnicestage204.jpg

But I was unable to accelerate even more and I ended up on a 7th place. Bozic is the winner of the day.

i1248.photobucket.com/albums/hh490/IanButlerPCM/Parisnicestage205.jpg

What can I say, it's just not coming this season. I feel real shitty because our team set up a very good lead-out train. However, I still have some progression left in the sprinting area, and I hope I can be the sprinter Greipel was in our team, one day!

Paris - Nice - Stage 3

Stijn Van Gent

i1248.photobucket.com/albums/hh490/IanButlerPCM/parisnicestage301.jpg

This might just be too hilly.

And my fear gets confirmed, I drop on the final ascend, no sprint for me...

i1248.photobucket.com/albums/hh490/IanButlerPCM/parisnicestage303.jpg

Valverde takes the win, he's strong!

i1248.photobucket.com/albums/hh490/IanButlerPCM/parisnicestage304.jpg

What a disappointment, again... I don't seem to get it right. I hope my season will be better with the cobbled races and in Poland & Eneco Tour, because this isn't working for me. I'm letting the team down...

Let's just hope he'll be alright for RvV (I noticed his fitness program didn't save last time and I only discovered now that his peak isn't even close to RvV! changed it, hopefully he'll build up form for RvV quick enough)

Stijn Van Gent

i1248.photobucket.com/albums/hh490/IanButlerPCM/parisnicestage401.jpg

Would this day be any different from last days?

I guess not. The hills are too much for me, again. Gilbert takes the win and the leader's jersey. Van Den Broeck loses 29 seconds, that's too bad.

See you tomorrow.

Tirreno - Adriatico - Stage 1

Eric Lombaerts

i1248.photobucket.com/albums/hh490/IanButlerPCM/tirrenostage101.jpg

No disappointing team time trial like 2012, but a hilly stage opens this Tirreno - Adriatico, suits me fine! Will De Gendt dominate this race like he did last year? All I know is I've grown a lot since then, and I'm here for a top 10, maybe top 5 place. And who knows, with the right kind of luck...

Sky was eager to ride, that's the way we know them.

i1248.photobucket.com/albums/hh490/IanButlerPCM/tirrenostage102.jpg

But they push the pace so hard that De Gendt, maybe due to a loss of attention, loses contact with the peloton! He works hard to chase his way back into the pack.

i1248.photobucket.com/albums/hh490/IanButlerPCM/tirrenostage104.jpg

But he doesn't get closer...

Nearing the end, we're chasing a group with Cunego and Quintana in it. I set the pace on the uphill parts.

i1248.photobucket.com/albums/hh490/IanButlerPCM/tirrenostage106.jpg

It was my first day as a leader and I think I did well. I was able to give commands to the team-mates and they listened to me. When I was alone, I set the pace myself. I can see myself leading the entire team one day, but that's too far ahead in the future! Back to the now:

Chavanel attacked, a dangerous rider. I couldn't let him go, so I went with him.

i1248.photobucket.com/albums/hh490/IanButlerPCM/tirrenostage107.jpg

Unfortunately it came back together to a group of about 30 riders. I set myself in Van Avermaet's wheel and sprinted my legs off.

i1248.photobucket.com/albums/hh490/IanButlerPCM/tirrenostage108.jpg

I think I did fairly well and ended up on a 7th place, with Boasson Hagen taking the win.

i1248.photobucket.com/albums/hh490/IanButlerPCM/tirrenostage110.jpg

De Gendt will lose more than 10 minutes today. His Tirreno - Adriatico is as good as over.

That means that my competition for the GC is narrowed down to about 28 riders, and not all of them can survive the mountain stage! So it's looking pretty good, I'm thinking top 5 is definitely possible! My legs are greater than ever, and the time trial should be my day to shine! I trained on time trialing a lot over the winter and got much better, so this time trial will be a great test!
Oh, by the way, I'll be wearing the Young Jersey tomorrow, hopefully I'll hang on to it!

See you tomorrow, for the first flat stage.

Nice start by Eric Smile

Ian Butler
It's a better start than for Stijn Pfft

I think he has a big shot here, looking at the competition.

JuanMotr
what is Stijn peaking for? Early classics and world championship?

FreitasPCM
Eric riding well in his way to success Cool

Ian Butler
@JuanMotr: He isn't riding the worlds, it's too hilly. He doesn't have a 100% peak, instead he has many periods of minor peaks at the cobbled season, the NC, tour of poland and lastly eneco tour. But the profile of the WC changes every season so maybe he'll ride them next year. (Eric peaks for WC, though)

@FreitasPCM: He's certainly off to a great start this season, let's hope he keeps it up Wink
