 April 20, 2012 – La Flèche Wallonne
La Flèche Wallonne is the second of three races in the Ardennais week. We're in Belgium now. La Flèche has a longer tradition (since 1936) than the Amstel Gold Race and can be considered a bit more prestigious.
The route is, for a race of such importance, relatively easy. A lot fewer hills (compared to the AGR) and only 200 kms have to be passed until the finish on the legendary Mur de Huy.

Again, Liquigas and Gilbert are the favorites here. They're challenged by the Schleck brothers or Alejandro Valverde.
Our sponsor expects us to win this race but considering how strong Philippe Gilbert looks at the moment, we would be satisfied with another podium finish.
The break of the day consisted of 12 riders. Marco Marcato was in there, as well as the likes of Franco Pellizotti or Robert Kiserlovski. They worked together extremely well and for quite some time, it looked like they would make it. Eventually, they were caught with only 4 kms to go!
Caught by... well, basically the whole pack! About 50 riders were still together. Andy Schleck was the only favorite who attacked but was caught with the original break.
Just as the Amstel Gold Race, this one was ought to end in a sprint as well. Andy Schleck took the sprint from the front. Damiano Cunego was on his wheel, soon overtook him and it looked pretty well. But then, how else could it be, came Philippe Gilbert! Bam! No chance for anyone else. Two from two for him. Peter Sagan did great as well, finishing fifth.
Same picture as last race: Gilbert wins in front of a Liquigas rider. This time, it's Cunego.

Although I love to see Gilbert winning these races, I'll give you some advice: let or Cunego, or Sagan hit Gilbert of the bike, closely before the final in LBL (let's say just before the Saint-Nicolas), and ride away with the other..... I think it's the only way to beat this guy

Thanks for all the comments. I'm very happy with the outcome, especially since I'm usually not that good at the Ardennes, and now I get on the podium even on extreme, that's really nice. Gilbert is just a monster, so I would settle for another podium at LBL very well.

Preview
The highlight of the Ardennais week has finally arrived! Liège – Bastogne – Liège, the fourth of five cycling monuments, along with La Lombardia the most prestigious hilly classic! Called „La Doyenne“ (The Oldest), it's the oldest cycling race that is still staged.
The course is very difficult, with lots of very steep ascents, distributed over 259 kms. Just as the other two classics, the finish is uphill but the last kilometers are much harder. Will we firstly see a solo win?

After his recent performances, Philippe Gilbert is surely the top favorite here. Having been the runner-up two times, Liquigas will surely try their best to beat him today. Apart from them, Alejandro Valverde, Cadel Evans or Samuel Sanchez will try to improve their bad performances.
Third race, third sponsor goal: Again, they want us to finish on the podium, which is exactly what we aim for. Coming from the Giro del Trentino, Vincenzo Nibali joined the team to improve it even more, using this one as a preparation for the Giro.

He made it! He really made it! Philippe Gilbert is now one of the very best cyclists of all times! With this win, he is one of only two riders - along with Davide Rebellin - who ever made the Ardennais triple.
A very nice conclusion of the Ardennais week. With his second second spot, he proved to be the next best puncheur after Philippe Gilbert. And if we realistically admit that the Belgian was way out of league, we made the very best of it, with three runner-up finishes plus a fifth and two Top 15s. We're very happy with that. |

Thank you all for the kind comments. I think to beat Gilbert, it would have taken a perfect day for both Sagan and Cunego. But one of them always had a rather bad shape (max 0) so more wasn't possible. But as I said, I'm extremely pleased with the results
