Antomarchi wins the final stage of the Tour du Haut Var ahead of Voeckler.
Voeckler didn`t sprint for the stage win as he takes the overall.

Great time-trial by Westra (2nd) and Jesse Sergent (4th). Smile

Yup. Specially Westra losing only 5 secs to Martin and winning a podium. And AC sucked today. He probably forgot to eat his steak yesterday. Pfft

No sign of Chavanel in this year's Volta ao Algarve. Not a good sign for someone targeting northern classics. He used to do better there in the past.

Nice from Voeckler to let Antomarchi pass for the stage win. Dumoulin unfortunately just finished in the 3rd group while Moncoutie was in the 2nd group. For some reasons he didn`t helped him on the last 10 kms although the podium was still in reach for Dumoulin.

Looking forward to Martin vs Cancellara ITT battles this season. Think Martin can still improve a bit but is already challenging Cancellara a lot.

Bit suprising Martin could only beat Westra by just 5 seconds.

Then again, that says alot about Westra

In the US we have Bicycling magazine. It isn't really about the pro sport, and is more for your weekend-warrior enthusiast type (Fred, being the Bike Snob term). In this month's past issue, they declared Phinney, Stetina, and King to be the top 3 young, upcoming American riders.

Phinney is probably top 3, King top 5, and Stetina top 10, but apparently Andy Talansky and of course TJVG are way worse than I thought...

We had this discussion at the races this weekend. Someone mentioned Phinney as the future of American cycling, and my buddy jokingly shouted "Fuck Phinney!" A lot of Talansky fans in my areaPfft

Bottom line, American cycling is only going to get better, what with Phinney, Talansky, TVG, Stetina, Fairly, Stetina, King, and a host of relative unknowns racing at the junior and u23 level. The US Juniors won the Nations Cup last season, indicating, to me at least, that there is more depth to this new generation than meets the eye.

There are a bunch of really good guys at the U23 level a few years from being names. You're old teammate Eastman, my old (sort of) teammate Nathan Wilson, plus guys like Juan Carmona and Joe Dombrowski.

Your right. Just a shame that Miyazawa finished out of the top 5. He was at one point the best Japanese sprinter, but now he's pretty old.

Hivert won ahead of Ventoso and Freire! Shock
Or did he attack? :/

The article I read just said that he won the sprint of the first group ahead of them. But this sounds just so weird.Wink

kumazan
The stage was kinda hard, so it's possible that the sprinters were a bit 'burned', notice how the only sprinters in the group were Ventoso and Freire, both decent climbers. But a bit weird anyway, yeah.

Aquarius
He says on L'Equipe that he indeed struggled to keep on with the main group on today's climbs, but that he eventually managed. Then he benefited from a chicane near the finish (30 or 40 m ?).
He also claims he'd lose 19 times on 20 against Freire, but this time he won. Good for him. Anyway, as soon as the World Tour will start (and the proper races), I guess the French will go back to where they belong : 5th to 7th nation in cycling.

marble
I remember Hivert back in the 2009 Paris - Nice. He won the sprint in the main group twice.. Though, none of the other riders were actually sprinters (unless you count Lorenzetto), so I guess this is a first.

Looking at the picture on cyclingnews, it certainly does look like he won a bunch sprint. 43 riders finished with the same time.

There is the bunch sprint for everyone. I get the sense that people were just burned out.
