Martin's bad day in the first week costed him at least one place in the GC. Too bad. Sad

But how is it possible that Nibali didn't win?! Shock

I was also stunned when I saw Basso winning the stage. Haven`t expected that at all.
Actually Martin would have been 6th with +19'54''. Was bad luck, don`t know why this happened. But well, 8th is better than I expected before. Also the whole Giro was harder than I expected, especially because most mountain stages were longer than 220km.

A long and hard Giro comes to an end. Today it will be our last chance to win a stage. Hunter might feel better than some other sprinters like Cavendish or Petacchi after all the mountains. But my tip is Boasson Hagen today. As 28th in the overall he proved that he is a good climber and not just a great sprinter. He already showed a good sprint performance in other stages so he might be the fittest today.

Just 108 riders are participating today. Several riders felt out of the time limit as Dean or Meyer for us.

Together with Astana and Sky we have the biggest squad still in the race with 7 starter. Scarponi will be 2nd in the overall but his team was the smallest. Just Bertagnolli was able to help him until today. Bertolini abandoned yesterday. Surprisingly most sprinters are still here and so we will see a nice sprint today. Just Steegmans, Ventoso, Greipel, Loddo and Chavanel are gone.

img696.imageshack.us/img696/2739/pcm0003u.jpg
A bigger group escapes. With Seeldraeyers and Samoilau there are also two top 15 contenders.

img35.imageshack.us/img35/7684/pcm0004e.jpg
Especially RadioShack and HTC are doing the pace as on most flat stages. Hushovd and Cavendish are their riders. But also Meier is helping for Hunter and because of these two riders.

img802.imageshack.us/img802/4629/pcm0005.jpg
Nothing really happened on this stage. So we jump to the last 15km. The group is caught and the sprinter preparations begin.

img339.imageshack.us/img339/3032/pcm0006.jpg
There are 3 trains. On the left Hermans-Hushovd, who still has a small gap. Then Ulissi-Gavazzi-Hunter and in the middle the best positioned train Frapporti-Modolo-Cavendish-Geslin. The sprint will start soon.

img594.imageshack.us/img594/9308/pcm0007u.jpg
Modolo was the strongest. He wins ahead of Swift and Hunter, who showed a strong performance today and had a good end speed. Strangely Cavendish didn`t even sprint. Obviously he had no more energy, so Goss on 7 was the best HTC rider. Boasson Hagen on 65 was a bit weird. He had no interest today and so Sky was riding for Swift.

Not a perfect but still a good Giro for our Garmin Team. We missed a stage win, but with many top 10 and two top 3 results plus the 8th and 27th overall we can be quite happy.

Enrico Zen (Colnago) felt out of the time limit today Wink
He tried to follow the group solo but in the end he had no more energy left to stay in the peloton.

Vincenzo Nibali has also another big acchievment. He is the first rider after Eddy Merckx in 1968, who won the overall, the point and the KoM classification. That is Giro supremacy! Great performance by him. It will be interesting to follow his career. Will he stay at Liquigas or changing he team?

Nice 3rd with Hunter in final stage, good overall 8th for Martin in such a hard Giro... Nibali was unbelievable great in Giro!

Summary May

img255.imageshack.us/img255/1671/ergebnisse.jpg
We just rode the Giro and the Tour of California in May. We can be quite happy with our results although we couldn`t celebrate a stage win.
Fabio Felline is a quite interesting rider. He is just 21 but already nice skills. So he won 2 hard stage races in May. We thought about him earlier the season so we might contact him later as his contract ends in 2011.

img703.imageshack.us/img703/967/ptriders.jpg
With his Giro domination Nibali is also on top of the Pro Tour ranking. Our riders are a bit behind in this ranking. So none of us in the top 15.

img23.imageshack.us/img23/2952/ptteams.jpg
Liquigas also takes the lead in the team rankings with a comfortable gap to Saxobank. Here we are quite good as 6th. Especially Sanchez in PN and Vansummeren in Gent-Wevelgem were collecting the points.

img689.imageshack.us/img689/3002/awardsiw.jpg
No question that Nibali got his award. 10 stage wins and the overall in the Giro. Never before the award was that deserved. Will Nibali also go for the Tour or the Vuelta? Would be quite interesting then.

The young award is always a bit strange. I don`T really know how young you are allowed to be for this award. Because riders like Van Garderen or Martin are still U25 but too old for this award.
So Patrick Gretsch wins this award in May.
The young German timetrialist of the HTC squad won the ITT in his home race, the Bayernrundfahrt.

Could you post the stats of Felline? Had him in my custom team with the ASO DB, and he's turning out to be one of my best riders. Amazing riding, cobbles and stamina (finishing 3th in the Tour of Flanders, if PCM hadn't screwed up).

He looks quite good in flat, hill, cobbles and also not bad in mo,TT, for a 21 yo really well. I don`t know his limits but I am sure there is still something.
Also not the worst sprinter. But with already 53 race days his season might be almost over after 5 month.

Actually I planned to ride just the Dauphinee and Suisse in June. But then I saw that some riders have quite less racedays over the season and so especially Boom with just 48 in whole 2011 is too less for a rider like him.

So we decided to take part in the Skoda - Tour de Luxembourg with a strong squad lead by Boom and Zabriskie and in the DELTA Tour Zeeland with Boom and Bobridge as leaders.

So Lars Boom might be in a good shape for the Dutch nationals and the Tour.

Tuco the Ugly
Nice 7th (I'm not counting Nibali b/c he was clearly riding a different race).

roturn
Indeed he was. Thanks. Not sure about new transfers, especially because of my low transfer budget at the moment, so it might be that I haven`t enough money for a new stage racer like Van Garderen. Then Martin might be the leader in next years Giro, too.
My plans are to get a stage racer, a young allrounder like Felline and maybe another sprinter like Ciolek or Goss.

The Tour de Luxembourg is a quite difficult 5 day stage race with many hills. Many riders use it generally as an early test for the Tour de France.
It`s first held in 1935 with Mathias Clemens as winner. He has also the record with 5 wins. With Frank Schleck and Ricci-Poggi the winner of 2009 and 2010 are also participating. While 2nd one won out of an attack, Frank Schleck is a big favourite again this year.

Ricci-Poggi won the 3rd stage with an successful breakaway and none of the favourites were able to gain enough time on him on the final 2 stages.
Garmin didn`t participated here last year. But with Gadret, Wegmann, Rabon and Moinard there are 4 riders of the top 10 starting again.

Garmin squad 2011:
img130.imageshack.us/img130/5632/teamtb.png
Zabriskie and Danielson still have quite a good form after California. Lars Boom`s last race is already a few weeks ago, so he needs some more days before we can expect great results by him.
Because of the spontaneous idea to take part here, we just have a 7 rider squad.

I guess, we will see Schleck, Menchov and Gesink also in the TdF. So they can prove that their form is already relatively well.
In the flat stage we have also some good sprinters. McEwen, Feillu and Swift rode quite successful the Giro, but also Ciolek, Goddaert, Kluge, Stroetinga, Veelers or Bozic are good sprinters.

Good luck! Strong startlist here...

Thanks. But not sure if Boom is fit enough for the 3 hilly stages. Fitness of 65 atm. Just forgot him in the planner to let him ride the Dauphinee or Suisse. So he still needs some race days as leader. He might be a big favourite in the DELTA Tour Zeeland after this race and then a good help during the TdF plus a good attacker next to Vansummeren.

img594.imageshack.us/img594/1574/pcm0001.jpg
We start with a short but in the end hilly prologue. Top favourites are Boom, Chavanel and Vaugrenard. But I also think we should have a look on Zabriskie, Wyss, Van Winden, Rabon or Fothen, who always likes these short timetrials.

img718.imageshack.us/img718/3654/pcm0004.jpg
Zabriskie on the road. He is just 1s slower than Marcel Wyss, we missed the Suisse rider.
6'08

img529.imageshack.us/img529/6425/pcm0005p.jpg
The Dutch timetrial champion Dennis Van Winden can`t beat their times.
6'13

img715.imageshack.us/img715/7944/pcm0006n.jpg
Danielson is another rider of our squad, who can come close to the actual times. But not today. Same time as Van Winden.
6'13

img88.imageshack.us/img88/273/pcm0007.jpg
And another Garmin rider as we have 4 strong prologue riders. Jack Bobridge had already a long season and is still able to get good results.
6'11

img232.imageshack.us/img232/1917/pcm0008k.jpg
Czech champion changed teams and is now riding for Vacansoleil. We had also interest but had already engaged a similar rider with Boom at the same time. Not a very good time for him.
6'19

img810.imageshack.us/img810/7236/pcm0010.jpg
Fothen had a strong race in the Tour de Romandie, where he finished 4th in the overall. Also a good time today. We must watch him in this race for sure.
6'09

img80.imageshack.us/img80/8307/pcm0012c.jpg
Denis Menchov. He won the Tour last year ahead of Contador and Schleck. Then he was transfered to Ag2r and wants to repeat it in 2011.
6'13

img834.imageshack.us/img834/9241/pcm0013.jpg
Sylvain Chavanel was my bet for today as he is the best prologue rider next to Boom. And he has a new best time.
6'02

Unfortunately I have no screenshot of Boom, but he finished quite strong with just 6s to Chavanel and s.t. with Zabriskie.
6'08

img812.imageshack.us/img812/3636/pcm0014n.jpg
Vaugrenard had a good spring and was very strong in the Ardennes. So he is also a favourite for this race. His time could be better, but his strenght are the hills.
6'11

Surprisingly F.Schleck did extremely well here. I didn`t expect it and so I don`t have a screen. He finished 2nd with 6'07.
So Chavanel and Schleck are the favourites for the next stages.

Although it`s classified as a hilly stage I think most riders won`t have big problems today. The hills aren`t long enough for real attacks. So my favourites are Swift, Ciolek and Feillu today. Our main goal must be to avoid losing time if there are attacks.

img507.imageshack.us/img507/6563/pcm0002.jpg
A few rider attacked after 30km. With Rabon and Hoste there are also two good riders for the overall in this group.

img52.imageshack.us/img52/2279/pcm0003v.jpg
Quinziato crashes and it doesn`t look very good how Arvesen rides into him. But both can continue.

img443.imageshack.us/img443/3654/pcm0004.jpg
Especially Milram and Saxobank are doing the pace. Ciolek is working a lot, so they might attack later.

img823.imageshack.us/img823/1536/pcm0005l.jpg
Juraj Sagan and Hoste attack out of the group when the peloton is coming closer. 20km to ride and 2'30 for them.

img841.imageshack.us/img841/5720/pcm0006g.jpg
Another crash. Tossato and Tjallingi this time on the ground. These roads are quite hard to ride with many corners.

img526.imageshack.us/img526/273/pcm0007.jpg
F. Schleck attacks on the lat hill and Chavanel follows. But they have no chance as also Garmin is doing a high pace now. But it might be too late. With 3km they group has still 1min.
This wasn`t perfect by us as we ignored the time for a long period and when we started to work it was too late.

teleciclismo.com/file_public/news/Bandiera.jpg
Marco Bandiera wins the sprint of the group ahead of Amorison and Rabon. For any reason my image resizer deleted the finish screenshot when it crashed.

img63.imageshack.us/img63/9839/pcm0009w.jpg
Romain Feillu wins the sprint for the 9th ahead of the two Sky riders Swift and Vigano 59s later. This is not that much, but a rider like Rabon is hard to beat now.

Quite good result at the prologue. Boom does not look that worse Wink

roturn
I agree that the prologue was quite good, although a Boom in top shape would have won it probably. But in the first stage his pulse was most times higher than Zabriskie`s.
But I prefer it his way, when the fitness has a higher influence than in older PCM`s. So a 73hi can win against 79hi in some races.

valverde321
Or like a 76 Mo and 76 Hil (Uran) can lose to a 65Mo and 71Hil (Rojas). It makes me mad.

roturn
But then training is much more important. I bet there were real races where Uran lost contact and Rojas were able to stay.
In the knowledge that Fischer isn`t a top sprinter with 72 I just train him on 2 very big peaks. Last year he won one stage in the Pais Vasco and then again some races after the Tour and was my best rider in Vattenfall Cyclassics, because Farrar had no form.

Hey, great podium with Hunter in the last Giro stage! Boom and Zabriskie rode a pretty good prologue Luxembourg. Hope you can get soem nice results there Wink

img576.imageshack.us/img576/1574/pcm0001.jpg
This stage is much more hilly than yesterday. So we might see attacks on Rabon`s jersey today. Can Boom compete with Schleck and Chavanel or is his fitness level still too low?

img815.imageshack.us/img815/6563/pcm0002.jpg
After many attacks a medium group was allowed to ride away. The French champion Peraud is the most dangerous.

img89.imageshack.us/img89/4886/pcm0003x.jpg
To avoid making the same mistake than yesterday, Löw and Dao are doing a low pace. So the time gap is never too big.

img35.imageshack.us/img35/1121/pcm0004g.jpg
The riders reach the first of the 3 rounds in the final circuit. Wegmann with the first attack. Schleck and Chavanel are following. Zabriskie, who feels much better than Boom on the climbs doesn`t counter as Bobridge is still able to do a high pace and there are still 30km to go.

img580.imageshack.us/img580/4629/pcm0005.jpg
Next climb and Chavanel attacks. He is still angry about losing the jersey after just one day. Wegmann is again very attentive.

img192.imageshack.us/img192/3032/pcm0006.jpg
With just 9km to ride the group is already caught. Schleck attacks on the same point where Wegmann tried it 2 laps earlier.

img257.imageshack.us/img257/273/pcm0007.jpg
This time Zabriskie is following as also Chavanel and Wegmann. Boom is quite exhausted and has to stay in the peloton together with Peterson and Danielson. But also Rabon seems to be in troubles.

img709.imageshack.us/img709/1471/pcm0008h.jpg
4km to the finish line and mostly downhill. Just Zabriskie and Schleck have a 10s gap. Wegmann and Chavanel are back in the field.

img814.imageshack.us/img814/7236/pcm0009.jpg
Well, it was not enough for a stage win but 2nd behind the World Champion is definitely not that bad.
Later we got bad news. The jury decided to give them the same time than the other favourites although there was a small gap. And even worse. Even the next group with Rabon, where was clearly a gap was counted with the same time.
So we just won the bonus seconds...what a shame.
Rabon had big troubles today but had luck with the decision and keeps the jersey.

I hate that gap system Sad Nonetheless an amazing performang by Zabriskie, hopefully he can show something at the next stages...

roturn
Thanks. There is one hilly and one flat stage coming. So I have to attack on the hilly stage.
I just changed gene_f_time_gap to 10 in stage 3 and 4. So this stage will be different the next time.
All stages with a hill on the last 10km are 10 in my opinion. Otherwise you don`t even need to attack on these hills. But for this stage it was too late.
