Maglia Azzurra
The KOTM-jersey will probably go to one of the GC-favourites, as Nibali, Antón or Kelderman. But still, there are some outsiders to win it. The question is if they have made a goal of winning the maglia azzurra, or if they let the points slip away while aiming for a stage win or a good GC?
Ivan Basso
Double Giro-winner Ivan Basso is at an age (36) that getting a podium os out of reach. His TT-abilities have decreased too much for doing that. But nevertheless, he is still one of the better climbers.
José Rujano
The steeper the road, the more José Rujano loves it. The small Venezuelan lightweight has had some great GC-finishes in the last 3 years (2nd in '11, 5th in '12 and 3rd in '13), and won 4 stages in these 3 years. For ure he'll aim at another top 5, but he'll also be looking for the KOTM-rankings.
Cayetano Sarmiento
Riding a few years for Italian team Acqua et Sapone, Colombian Cayetano Sarmiento will aim for a stage win and possibly the KOTM-jersey.
Dario Cataldo
Dario Cataldo is riding on his home soil, and especially the stage to Chieti will be marked in his diary, as it finishes close to his native town. But the Italian riding for a Belgian team wants more. The KOTM-jersey?
Luke Rowe
British Luke Rowe is one of the biggest climbing talents to start in the Giro. WIth his weak TT-abilities and stamina, he should focus at the KOTM-jersey.

Maglia Rosso
As with every GT, the question is: will the points jersey be won by a sprinter or by a GC-contender? The sprinter teams have to work hard to let every flat stage finish in a mass sprint, so the sprinters can collect enough points.
Edvald Boasson Hagen
The biggest favourite to win the points jersey is Norwegian Edvald Boasson Hagen. Not only did he managed to win 8 stages in the GT's the last 3 years, he alson won the points jersey twice in the Tour de France. His biggest advantage is that he is also one of the best timetrialists, so he has 3 more stages (prologue and 2 ITT's) to score points.
Tyler Farrar
Tyler Farrar has won 11 stages in the last 3 years of GT's. The highlight was the Tour de France 2012, with 5 stage wins and the green jersey. He hasn't showed himself this year, but he'll be ready for the Giro!
Peter Sagan
Slowakian Peter Sagan hasn't won a mass sprint when competing against the world's best sprinters. But this Giro, he gets his chance to do it. He has the speed to do it, especially when the terrain has been hilly.
_________________________________________________________________________
Theo Bos
Theo Bos left Monster Energy and joined Omega Pharma - Quick Step last winter. He has been pretty invisible this season so far (7th in the Scheldeprijs was the best result), but the former track specialist wants to add a 2nd Giro-stage win to his palmares, besides his 1st one in 2012.
Andrea Guardini
The best Italian sprinter of the moment is Astana's Andrea Guardini. He was won in Oman earlier this season and now wants to fullfill his prophecy in being the successor of Alessandro Petacchi and Mario Cipollini. One negative factor: he has problems with speed bumps, so needs pancake flat stages.
_________________________________________________________________________
John Degenkolb
After riding a few years in the Continental Circuit, John Degenkolb can show his sprinting capacity at World Tour level. He won't win the maglia rosso, but can finish a few times in the top 5.
Michael Matthews
The same story goes for Michael Matthews. He left United Health Care and joined Qantas. The question remains if he won't waste energy in joining breakaways.
_________________________________________________________________________
Maglia Bianca
Only 1 real favourite: Wilco Kelderman. Only a crash can prevent him from winning the U25-rankings, as his main rivals are Landa, Majka, etcetera....
Stay tuned for stage 1

Stage 1
The 97th edition of the Giro d'Italia begins in the city of Taranto. Taranto is an old harbour city loctaed at the Golfo di Taranto in the region of Puglia. The 6.5km prologue isn't entirely flat, as it goes up and down alll the route. But with max gradients under 5%, it doesn't favour the climbers.
Peter Sagan is the first rider from our team to start and he sets the best time so far. With the time of 8'37, he can take place in the hot seat.
But our Slovakian is kicked out of the hot seat by Swedish Thomas Löfkvist. The rider from Team Sony Ericsson is 4 seconds faster: 8'33.
The Czech national time trial-champion Frantisek Rabon rides a very good prologue. He is only 1 single second slower than Löfkvist and sets the 2nd time so far.
Team Sky's German time trialist Christian Knees is the next of the favourites to start. He sets the 3rd time so far, '2 behind Löfkvist.
New best time! The main favourite to win today can handle with the pressure. Edvald Boasson Hagen rides an amazingly fast time, 10 seconds faster than Löfkvist. Is anyone capable of going faster than 8'23?
One of the outsiders to win this Giro, is Slovenian Janez Brajkovic. As he finally gets the opportunity to ride for his own chances, he immediately sets a great result. 2nd place so far, only '6 behind Hagen.
Having seen one of his main rivals for the GC-win, Igor Antón, riding a terrible prologue (99th, '40 behind the winner), Wilco Kelderman knows he can gain some valuable time already. He isn't able in beating EB Hagen as in Romandie, but the 3rd time so far, '6 slower than the Norwegian, is a great start of this Giro.
The last rider to start is the one that finally wants to win the Giro. Vincenzo Nibali has won the Tour and Vuelta, and start his quest to win the Giro with the 16th time, '17 slower than Hagen.

Today's Winner
Word from the DS
Stage 1 is done, and we're very happy with the result.3 riders in the top 8 is a result we haven't expected. And Kelderman has already gained valuable seconds to his opponents ('11 to Nibali & Scarponi, '21 to Evans and '34 to Antón). Now all he needs to do is to stay out of trouble in the next flat stages.

For some reason I never followed this story before, but it looks like I picked a nice time to join. Very impressed by the reporting style so far and also looks like you have assembled a very nice team of talents.
When my exams are over, I'll definitely trawl my way through the rest of the story too Good luck for Kelderman in Italia! |

Stage 2
The riders stay in Puglia for the 2nd stage and head from Taranto to Polignano a Mare over 173 kilometres. It features two sets of hills with 2 KOTM-sprints, but the last 20 kilometres are flat, along the Adriatic coast.
170km to go
The press with the camers are waiting for the first rider to attack in this Giro. Matthew Busche (Radio Shack) is the one to do it, catching up some nice media attention. He gets countered by Kasper Jebjerg (Saxo Bank) and Oscar Gatto (Farnese Vini).
141km to go
Of course, the 3 get caught by 6 other riders who also feel like going on an adventure. Manuele Mori (Lampre) leads the other 8 over the summit of the Villagio Turistico and collects the first KOTM-points. He is followed by Busche, Francisco Ventoso (Euskaltel), Gatto, Maarten Wynants (Omega Pharma), Rohan Dennis (Qantas), Job Vissers (Rabobank), Jebjerg and Claudio Cucinotta (Acqua et Sapone). The margin to the peloton is still small, 2'05.
77km to go
5 more riders bridge the gap to the BOTD, namely Bernardo Riccio (Androni), Alexandre Pichot (Europcar), Damiano Margutti (Alitalia) and the Vacansoleil-duo Iljo Keisse and Tom Veelers. As a result, th pace of the peloton drops and the margin increases to 6'32. Gatto wins the 2nd KOTM-sprint, followed by Mori. The latter one secures himself of the Maglia Azzurra!
32km to go
The first team to set up a chase was Garmin. But their sprint must have bad legs, as they suddenly stop the chase. Then Dexia takes over to defend their Maglia Rosa. The gap, with Alejandro Valverde leading the peloton, is 3'29.
7km to go
2 riders have attacked out of theBOTD, shortly before the peloton would have caught them. Iljo Keisse and Manuele Mori get joined by Leonardo Duque (Radio Shack) who has made the jump out of the peloton. But that peloton is coming closer, less than 30 seconds now!
2km to go
Duque is the last rider that will get caught, and the teams are preparing for the sprint. Well, teams?? Petronas - Monster Energy has formed a train, with Kelderman handing it over to final lead out man Ligthart. Our sprinter Peter Sagan is being brought in a perfect position. He has got Enrico Rossi (Alitalia) and John Degenkolb (Sony Ericsson). Edvald Boasson Hagen has lost his train, and the Garmin-train has lost it's sprinter Tyler Farrar. Also some other sprinters are nowhere to be seen, like Theo Bos and Andrea Guardini.
1km to go
Sagan takes over from his final lead out man Ligthart 1300 metres before the finish. Only Degenkolb can hold his wheel, so the battle for the win is between those 2. Rossi is in 3rd place, while Boasson Hagen seems to be forgetting that he must sprint, as he is still waiting for something...
Finish
John Degenkolb is closing in inch by inch, fights himself next to Sagan and even takes over the lead. Great win by the German, but a disappointing 2nd for our Slovakian, as he was so close to the win... 3rd place goes to Edvald Boasson Hagen, who sprinted the last kilometre with a speed 10 km/h higher than the others...... Rossi takes the 4th place and Mark Renshaw (Rabobank) the 5th.
When all riders have finished, a small group filled with Astana boys crosses the line after 5'33, among them José Serpa, Andrea Guardini and Ivan Basso. We really don't know what has happened to them. Just as with Kanstantsin Siutsou (Movistar), who has abandoned with a sore back, what turned out to be a fractured vertebrae .

Today's Winner
Word from the DS
Damnnnnnnnnnnnn, so close.......... This was probably the best chance for Sagan to win a mass sprint, with the other sprinters (Bos, Farrar, EBH) not taking part or being attentful in the sprint...

"but a disappointing win for our Slovakian"
How can a win be disappointing?
Just kidding, understand what you meant here. Good performance by Sagan, shame that he missed out on the win, but it looked promising nonetheless. If keeps this form, he'll surely get away with something from this Giro. |
