Yeah I'm very surprised with Zabriskie. There's definitely going to happen something on the next stage, but if he can stay at the front then he might even be able to move into the top ten with a great time trial, because if you look at the riders ahead of him in the GC, there are no real good time trialists among them.
you already have some info??
BTW lucky for you DiLuca didn't sprint along in that bunch sprint, in my first career with the pcmgeeks-db he did and won (to extend his lead in the GC through the bonus seconds... )
I don't know. I haven't raced it yet. I'm as anxious to find out as you are
EDIT:In case no one noticed, the 19th stage is on page 20

June 2: Giro d’Italia - Stage 20 | Bardolino > Verona - 42 km
Stage Profile
23 seconds. That’s what stands between Andy and eternal greatness, and 42 kilometres of time trial of course. The 90th Giro is going to be decided today and it’s going to be a rally between our captain Andy Schleck and Pre-Tour favourite Danilo Di Luca. Damiano Cunego looks certain to take 3rd, while Simoni must be very frustrated with finisinh just outside the podium, unless he can pull of a phantom time trial today. But between us, he can’t.
The first time to beat was set by Sebastian Lang (GST) and he’s a true specialist in this discipline, his time lasted for quite some time. The first serious challenger was Great Britain’s David Millar and the Brit did very well as he beat Lang on all of the intermediate times and eventually beat the German by 46 seconds to clock a new fastest time.
Sebastian Lang and David Millar showed their capability in time trials as they were the first serious contenders to set fast times.
157 riders are left in the Giro on this 20th stage and as 50 of them had taken off it was time for our first rider, Luke Roberts to turn to the stage. Luke has been in good form during this tour and he has shown himself in a few breakaways throughout these 3 weeks. He was lacking a bit on the first two intermediates, but he finished off very fast to clock a provisional 3rd best time, 45 seconds slower than Millar. Brian Vandborg had before Roberts came, clocked seconds best time, meaning Lang was now pushed to fourth. Our next rider was Bobby Julich who was 96th in the GC before today. He hasn’t been in very good form and the plan was actually to let him abandon the race after the first mountain stage, but he was so dedicated to help Andy that he stayed. He clocked provisional 10th best time.
Luke Roberts and Bobby Julich ran decent times today after three weeks of acting domestiques for Andy.
Joost Posthuma showed good form as he claimed provisional 2nd best time, while young Roman Kreuziger was feeling fatigue meaning he could only take provisional 7th.
Kurt-Asle was our next rider to hit the course, but as he had also done a lot of work for Andy in the past three weeks he couldn’t muster up a very good time.
Tyler Hamilton has been completely anonymous through this race, to tell you the truth I didn’t even know he was in it.
Millar’s time was finally beaten as Marzio Bruseghin started his 20th stage and turned in a great performance to beat Millar by 1’32” at the line. This was the man to beat today. Janez Brajkovic also did very good as he finished his day in provisional 3rd. The top 3 was now: Bruseghin, Millar, Brajkovic. Christian Vandevelde the took off and he also claimed a good provisional time but he was bound to get degraded later on.
Who can challenge this phantom time by Marzio Bruseghin. Brajkovic couldn’t.
The next significant riders were the Scandinavian duo, Gustav Larsson and Nicki Sørensen. Larsson was in his field today and he didn’t leave his Swedish fans down as he claimed provisional 2nd in Verona, just over a minute slower than Bruseghin. Nicki Sørensen couldn’t do much on the time trial as it isn’t really his speciality, but I just have to point out what a fantastic Giro he has had. The stage win speaks for itself, but the fact that he could sit with Andy for a very long time in the hilly has been really important for our young captain. Nice ride Nicki!
Nicki Sørensen was cheered on by the fans along the route as he has had a phenomenal ride in this Giro.
Rigth after Nicki took off from the platform his teammate Volodymir Gustov climbed it and got ready to race. Gustov has also been in tremendous form in this tour as he is 25th in the GC and he has also been a fantastic helper for Andy in the mountains. Simoultaneously as Gustov was on route, Ricardo Riccó was also putting in his last effort to stay in the top ten and one of the guys he had to hold off for this top ten spot was actually David Zabriskie, who had already taken off a few minutes before Riccó. And Dave was incredibly strong. He was a bit behind on the first intermediate but then he picked himself up and bursted into the lead with a fantastic finish. Could he claim a top ten spot? He had beaten Bruseghin with a whopping 46 seconds!
David Zabriskie claimed the lead and challenged Riccó for his 10th spot in the GC.
David Arroyo fought for his 6th place, while Nocentini was looking to hold on to his surprising 5th spot.
Then it was Simoni’s turn. But this wasn’t his pigeon as he’s a quite poor time trialist and rightly so he couldn’t do much about the 4’37” deficit to Andy nor the 2’13” deficit to Cunego’s podium spot. Meanwhile Cunego couldn’t do anything about Di Luca’s second or Andy’s lead, which we didn’t expect either. So the GC was now almost set.
Both Simoni and Cunego rode in jerseys, that really belonged to Andy.
As Cunego finished we were only missing Di Luca and Schleck, so the top 2-10 was now set and Zabriskie had done an amazing job as he had climbed to a fantastic 8th in the GC, now that’s another super result for CSC and Zabriskie of course. He could already have earned himself a Tour Spot with that performance.
Now the eyes turned to the true battle of today. Danilo Di Luca against Andy Schleck for the overall Giro win. Andy had a 23 seconds advantage over the Italian, but could he hold it? It has been a strenuous three weeks for Andy and as he hasn’t tried riding a Grand Tour before this you could suspect that he would crack sooner or later. The problem for Di Luca was that he had only one day left to do so.
The Battle for La Maglia Rosa: Andy Schleck vs. Danilo Di Luca – Would Andy finally crack or is he pulling off a legendary achievement?
So did he crack? No bloody way he didn’t, on the contrary actually. He had another field day and Di Luca was an his heels all day as he has finally met the real “killer”. Andy was scorching up the road on his way to victory and he was breathing down Di Luca’s neck as they hit the final part of the route. Andy was 10th on the first intermediate, but then he followed the same recipe as Dave as he stepped it up a notch and by the 2nd intermediate he was now fourth. Di Luca finished 19th, a fraction of a second slower than his teammate Roman Kreuziger. Andy held a tremendous pace coming into the final turns as he claimed fourth best time on the line and bagged his first Grand Tour win in the age of 21. He actually came close to catching Di Luca on the home stretch, but what did it matter?
Andy Schleck became unofficial Giro winner today in Verona, but he has to wait until tomorrow for it to be official, but between us: HE HAS FRICKIN’ WON IT!!
Unfortuneately for Dave his thunder was stolen as the attention turned to one of the youngest Giro winners ever and rightly so because it’s an unheard performance and if you look at the GC development through this race Andy has been down with more than 2 minutes at one point. But he has turned it around where it really mattered and that was the mountains. I guess we’re going to celebrate this today, but we’ll wait with the real celebration until tomorrow where his win is official and on his resume. Oh and nice ride by Dave.
