Van Aert and Teunissen seem to be in top shape ahead the start of the classics season with the duo working perfectly together in the first two stages to give Teunissen two victories in mass sprint finishes.
Fuglsang won the only uphill finish of the race, but with a very big group coming together at the finish, it was all going to be decided in the time - trial. There, after the intermediate check point it looked like Fuglsang's team - mate, Bob Jungels will be taking the glory, but De Plus had an amazing second half to beat the Deceuninck rider and take the stage and the overall win.
De Plus put the hammer down in the time - trial

Campenaerts won the time - trial in the second stage, but failed to take the leader's jersey, who went to Herrada, as he was caught on the wrong side of a split in the opening stage, as well as some other important names. Before we entered the decisive two stages, a crash shook up the peloton on the downhill from the last climb of the third stage, which saw only about 20 riders survive.
A group of four riders went clear in the queen stage and finished the stage together: Kelderman, Herrada, Soler and Madouas. Despite finishing last in the group, Herrada would keep his jersey since no bonus seconds were awarded in at the finish. Still, no amount of bonus seconds would have helped Kelderman move into red as he was 22 seconds behind the Cofidis rider in the GC.
The four strongest climbers of the queen stage
Kelderman would manage to get a hold of the GC in the last stage. The short finishing climb proved to be very brutal and Herrada surprisingly cracked. Despite not being able to keep up with the winning duo of Uran and Oomen, Kelderman won enough time over Herrada to take the win.

With a rather weak start lists, it only came down on Jumbo and Ineos to chase down the breakaway. And Eenkhoorn, Van der Hoorn, Roosen and Jansen did a fantastic job in making sure we avoided a repeat of last year's breakaway success.
As we reached the final two cobblestoned climbs of the day, Van Aert launched a powerful move with the help of Mike Teunissen which left all of his rivals behind, trying but failing to keep up withe black and yellow duo
As the raced reached Bosberg, the final climb of the day, Van Aert was alone in the lead and he looked set to finally write his name on the list of winners of one of the major Belgian classics
And it was indeed Van Aert's first major classic win. Behind him, Teunissen was caught by Wisniowski and Roelandts and failed to reach the podium, but that didn't really mattered since he did his main job for the day: helping Wout win

The team did a splendid job leading out Danny Van Poppel in the final kilometres. And Danny managed to repeat last year's feat by being first across the finish line even though the sprint was quite closer than it should have been given the perfect team work that had been done for him.

The race started perfectly for the team with a win in the opening TTT. The team would lose the red jersey in the next stage to Gaviria due to the bonus seconds the Colombian was awarded for winning the stage.
The leader's jersey would be back in the team in the very next stage though, with Sivakov taking it. The Russian rider was very close to get his first win for the team in the next stage, but Ackermann took advantage of the road flattening out before the finish to snatch the win from him. The German would go on to win the remaining 2 mass sprints of the race as well.
Sivakov would get his moment of glory in the queen stage where he was first across the finish line as he consolidated his lead in the general classification which would eventually turn into a victory. It was a race dominated by young riders, with Lutsenko being the only rider in the top 5 of the overall rankings not to feature in the youth rankings as well.

The startlists have been really weak, especially in the cobbled classics. Hopefully, everything will be back to "normal" once we reach the big races.

Wow, great results recently. You took a big win with Sivakov, and winning both KBK and OHN is definitely a good sign heading into the classics season.

The Italian white roads produced quite a few crashes and splits in the pack in the last kilometres of the race. Sadly, due to some poor positioning, Van Aert was caught on the wrong side of one of the splits and despite Vervaeke and Hagen's best efforts he did not get back in contention due an amazing speed being set up in the pack.
The reason the pack rode the last kilometres so fast was because of a very strong attack put in by Fabio Aru. They would manage to catch the Italian in the end and for the third year in a row the race will be decided in a sprint. But none of the riders that finished on the podium this year have done so in the previous years. Pogacar and Padun battled out for the victory until the very last few metres, with the Ukrainian Champion getting the glory.

A breakaway stole Groenewegen's chance to win the opening stage in Paris - Nice. Groenewegen would take his stage win in the third stage, but the sprinter who made the most out of the race was Ackermann who won the other 2 mass sprints.
Third year in a row with stage win for Groenewegen
The advantage the breakaway had in the first stage over the pack was over 5 minutes which allowed Ledanois to keep the yellow jersey for 5 stages. He only lost it in the first hilly stage of the race.
There, at the top of the last climb Powless and Hagen broke away from the pack as no one seemed interested in following their pace. Soler joined and overtook them on the downhill with still a couple of escapees left on the road. The stage ended on a small steep hill, where Powless managed to make up the ground to both Soler and the last escapee left to take the stage win.
Powless sprints past Gougeard to take his biggest win yet
Despite opening up a gap to Soler, Powless would not take over the yellow jersey, with the Spaniard taking the lead thanks to the time he had won in the time - trial. Soler had no problem defending the jersey in the last stage, even winning the only top mountain finish of the race. After spending most of last year in the shadow of Nibali and Quintana at Mitchelton, it looks like with his former Movistar team - mate out, it's finally Soler's time to shine.

Plenty of success before this race though. I'm sure Powless was delighted with the outcome.

Despite being put in a perfect position by his team - mates, Van Poppel missed out on making it three in a row, with Weemaes going past him rather easily. Van Poppel is definitely not in the same great shape he was last year and many wonder if he even should be considered as the main MSR contender in these conditions.

The team did well in the opening team time - trial, but there was no way anyone was getting even close to Quick Step and their dream team in that day. Jungels, Lopez, Roglic and Mas awarded the jersey to Capecchi.
De Plus leading the team in the TTT
After two sprints won dominated by Aussie riders and De Plus getting quite lucky by avoiding a time loss after a late crash in the third stage, things really got heated as we reached the mountains.
The fourth stage, which was also the only top mountain finish of the stage, saw De Plus and Lopez riding away from everyone else. Laurens took the stage, but Lopez would keep the blue jersey as the Jumbo rider was unable to drop him. At the end of the day, only one rider was withing one minute of the duo in the GC; Lopez' team - mate Primoz Roglic, but the Slovenian would fade in the next stages, which would go to breakaways which were mostly made by very strong riders that lost their GC hopes in the fourth stage.
De Plus and Lopez on the attack
De Plus started the final time - trial 4 seconds behind Lopez and even though it wasn't a particularly long one, the Belgian had no problems moving into the overall lead to take the win. A very important victory for De Plus which shows that last year's Vuelta result was no fluke.

We are back with a more sprinter friendly finale for this year's race, with only Cipressa and Poggio before the finish. And everyone seemed content with a sprint finish as no one tried to attack on the final climbs, except for a small acceleration from Van Aert on Poggio which didn't lead to anything.
Van Poppel wasn't feeling very well today and the team did not bring the desired lead out either as they failed to group in time on the downhill. As we reach the flat, despite being together, they weren't in the strong position they were last year
Grosu eventually found a way to launch Van Poppel but just as he was making his move, the Dutch champion was blocked by Haller and all of his hopes for repeating last year's success seemed to be over
But Van Poppel somehow managed to get past the Austrian rider and actually contest the sprint for the top spots. It's going to be a very close finish though with Bennett, Van Poppel, Laporte Matthews, Ackermann and Ewan all with a chance to win this thing.
And it's Van Poppel who proves to be the fastest on the finish line. What a sprint by the Dutchman! If last year it was the team who had the most merit in the victory, this time it is definitely him

Fantastic win. Wasn't expecting that given van Poppel's current form, so I guess you must have been pretty ecstatic. |
