Living the Life - Part I of I
Ever since that Christmas day, things have been good in my life. I'm enjoying successes and happiness both in my professional and private life. The team camps were absolutely great and we're all ambitious to get the most out of this season.
Becca and I are having so much fun living together. Sometimes it's a bit weird, seeing our history, but we don't let it get to us. We both lead busy lives anyway.
For now, I'm enjoying a couple of great months in my life. I can only pray it lasts as long as it can...
Hi everyone!
We're past halfway Paris - Nice now.
Paris - Nice: Stage 5 For me the single most important day of my first half of the season. Simply no race or stage will be bigger for me up until the National Championships. (Well, maybe in Critérium du Dauphiné).
It's a tough climb to Station Saint-Honoré, but I've prepared well.
I woke up with amazing legs, so it was time to put them to the test!
The Race
Malori was looking for a way out. He escaped very early in the race and was part of the daily break.
Meanwhile, I was hidden in the peloton. In order to save enough energy for the final climb, I was somewhere around the 40th place. If there would be a crash, I could be in trouble, but I took the risk.
But then, when it mattered, at the foot of the final climb to Saint Honoré, I appeared out of nowhere. Roche stayed near to help where possible. I felt I was getting stronger, minute after minute.
Two kilometers into the climb, I launched a first attack. Roche professionaly dropped the pace, giving me about ten meters advantage over the competition.
The strongest climbers found my wheel. We formed a front group of about six. I never got out of the lead, I kept dictating the pace.
I decided I wouldn't give anyone the time to catch their breath. The audience was going crazy and I couldn't even hear myself breathe. All I heard was: Henry, Henry, Henry! It's on days like this I'm so glad and proud to be French!
A second attack! It was mental and physical warfare, I really wanted to take everything out today I could get.
I held the speed of the acceleration for longer than I thought was possible and longer than I ever did on training. I was having the best day ever in my cycling career.
I gained 30 seconds... 40 seconds... 50 seconds... A minute?
On the flatter section of the climb, I expected to lose some of that time, but I just kept going. 1 minute 10 seconds...
The audience was going wild now. A guy with sunglasses ran alongside me in his underwear, holding a French flag. I appreciate the gesture, but I really wished these guys would take it easy. It can be dangerous at times.
Either way, I was flying by now! The audience was screaming me uphill, so to speak.
Wanting to grab every possible second, I didn't even think to celebrate. I crossed the line in disbelief, but mostly completely dead. I had used every single bit of energy in my body for today.
I didn't celebrate by putting my arms up, but I let out a scream of relief. I think it was so loud the entire peloton must've heared it lower on the climb!
Almost two minutes passed before the first chaser crossed the line. Oh my God, how did I ever gain so much time on these guys?
Kwiatkowski crossed the line, completely broken, dead as a dog. I almost felt sorry for him.
I get into the Yellow Jersey, and with quite a lead! YES!

It felt amazing standing there on the podium. I've been on my share of podiums last year, but none compared to this. It looked like a true celebration of life. It looked like I was voted President or something. Everyone was just cheering, clapping, chanting my name. I felt like a God. The French always need someone to cheer for. It looks like I conquered a lot of French hearts today.

Analysis & Daily Thoughts
Everything today has been so amazing and it's all been happening so fast. From the minute I left Contador behind me, I've had such a rush of adrenaline.
The podium ceremony was like a movie. Afterwards I was taken to doping controle, but I didn't care, I knew I'd pass the test with 10/10. Nothing could break my mood!
Then I had to sign a bunch of autographs for people I didn't know, but they adored me for some reason. The press was next. The French press was especially praiseful about me. They said I was young, a climber, an attacker, a daredevil, a strong-minded guy, already National Champion and I would be the next French chouchou, like Voeckler was. Being born on the National holiday doesn't hurt in the process.
I have to say I'm not sure if I'm ready to become all that. I just want to race and win as much as possible, get everything out of my career as possible.
It might not be logical, but today's victory felt better than that stage win in the Vuelta last season. Here, on my home soil, between so many fans, it's a feeling I never want to forget.
Now up to tomorrow. I will defend this jersey with my life.
See you then!
Henry

Epic win for Henry, must be the biggest one so far! It is also looking very good for Henry in the GC now, let's hope he can hang on, and secure the overall victory

Great show from Henry, now let see how he can handle the pressure put by the (French) press on the Young French Talent

Wow what a win, awesome Henry. French public will rightly go crazy.
That guy in underwear probably is ill by now, weather looked pretty cold.

krisa - Thanks
nice is definitely an understatement here, though
Selwink - Agree
I had so much fun in that stage!
anderspcm - It's definitely the biggest one, especially since this was a direct battle against guys like Nibali, Henao... Keeping the GC will be hard, but with wings, Henry can fly
tpinot - That'll be the main challenge. Rolland & Pinot might give him some tips.
Dippofix - I hope so, too. Thanks, the victory tastes sweet!
Shonak - If Henry ever wants to run for president, now's the time to do it, I bet he's pretty popular
though if he wants real fame, he has to win a TDF stage! That underpants guy will not be running along tomorrow, I think so too.
sutty68 - It was the showing of a pure climber
Thanks for the great comments!
It's for stages like this I started this story! Henry is turning into a strong, pure climber, just the kind of rider I love!

Marseillaise Madness - Part I
I had just won stage 5 of Paris - Nice. It definitely was a turning point in my career and life. The French only care about a handful of races. Mostly it's all about the Tour and Paris - Roubaix, but Paris - Nice has gained in importance over the last few years.
The French are a curious people. Many a talent have wasted away under big expectations and too much pressure. Keeping my blog allowed my readers to warn me about this. I swore I wouldn't let the madness get to me.
But coming off the podium after my final appearance of the day (young jersey), a fat man approached me. He had the biggest moustache and no neck.
"Mr. Vergnaud?"
"That's me."
He was breathing so loud it made me nervous. Suddenly I found myself being pushed into a small area. It was just him and me...
Hi everyone!
Closing in on the finale of Paris - Nice!
Paris - Nice: Stage 6 There's but one thing on my mind today: don't lose any time, not a second.
The Race
I don't think I've ever been more concentrated. Luckily I was able to get some sleep after last night's excitement. I was ready to defend my honors and, more importantly, my jersey!
Having a good atmosphere in the team pays off on days like this. We ride as one! One for all, all for onel.
On the final climb, it was up to me. My job? Easy; stop any attack. Well, I meant easy to describe, not easy to do...
I jumped from wheel to wheel, trying to stop any attack. I didn't take turns, didn't ride a meter in the wind. Kill all attacks.
Gilbert wins his first for Lotto (well, his second career at Lotto) in the breakaway. I succeed in my task and keep the lead.

Paris - Nice: Stage 7 Biggest threat today would be the wind. Blowing 61km/h, I'll have to be careful not to get blown away.
The Race
I had a little more time to enjoy my jersey today. I'm so proud of it. The fans alongside the road were just fantastic. I even saw some Chinese kids, having a flag with my name on it!
As soon as we hit the coastside, the peloton blew to pieces. Malori deserves a medal after today, keeping me at the front with powers beyong my imagination. What a strong, flat rider.
Visconti took the stage, another one for the breakaway.

Analysis & Daily Thoughts
One. More. Stage.
Just the time trial left now. At the start, it immediately goes up towards the top of Col d'Eze. Then it's the descend, which is pretty tricky. The final kilometers are pancake flat.
I'm not sure if I can do this, but this jersey has given me wings so far, I won't let my team mates down. Tomorrow I might just take my second World Tour stage race in a row. It's about time climbers started winning general classifications again!
I'm ready.
Henry

Descent ride for Henry in stage 6 & 7, let's hope he can hang on to his lead at the time trial, maybe he should try to gain time on the ascent

Waoo alone with a strange guy in Marseille? Sounds more a thriller than a cycling story...
Fortunately we know Henry survives as he is still wearing yellow just before the last stage.
And hopefully after the last stage too

sutty68 - I wonder, too. If you see him, tell him I'm looking for him
muttisr - Well, you certainly predicted what was coming thanks a lot! The next EBH, qua talent maybe, but Henry's strengths lay elsewhere
anderspcm - That's the plan, thanks!
duxili - Yeah, let's hope it isn't turning into a horror story You'll know the answer to that in a second

Marseillaise Madness - Part II
Half an hour later, I was able to get out of there, finally. The moustache man turned out to be a big famous reporter. As a cyclist, I'm not really up to date with the rest of the world.
He was asking me all kinds of questions, to do some kind of profile. After a long talk, I told him I'd think about it.
As soon as I got out of there, another man approached me.
Jeez, is it too much to ask to leave me alone for a while?
It seemed my victory had done more than I wished it did.
Paris - Nice: Stage 8 Just 32.5 kilometers left in this Paris - Nice. I'm not a fan of time trials, but this one I should be able to handle.
The Race
It's the first time World Champion Time Trial De Gendt could show off his jersey. He would go on to take the stage, too.
I was the last one to go. Riding mostly on adrenaline, but focused enough!
The uphill part was perfectly for me. I didn't lose any time to my direct threats. In fact, I gained time!
First provisional time on the climb! But now for the hard part. I took no risk in the downhill.
But I stayed upright. The Yellow Jersey had given me wings once again. I'm performing better than ever!

First French winner since Jalabert in 1997, you can imagine the reaction of the crowd! There was a small riot at the podium, everyone was just celebrating so hard. It was kind of scary there, for a while, some fanatics out there. But mostly I was enjoying it.

So close, but I took the Points Jersey, too! Yes!

Needless to say, I took the Young Jersey, too. Best team was Radioshack, we came in 3th.
Analysis & Daily Thoughts
Well... That's it. I'm star struck. It still has to sink in. My phone has been ringing non stop here. Becca is going crazy. The attention I get is phenomenal; letters, phone calls, I'm the town hero over here.
At the age of 22, I have achieved more than I could even pray for starting my career at Citigroup. I wonder what else I can achieve if I put my mind to it! I will never know if I don't go for it 100%. Oh, and remind me to ask for a raise one of these days.
The French attention is huge, a bit scary at times, but for one thing it can be quite handy.
Pinot, Rolland and me, we all share one thing: we're mostly climbers. That means that the coming editions of the Tour will feature a bit less TT kilometers. Wouldn't that be a coincidence, now?
With Kristoff still injured, the team is looking for a replacement in Milan - San Remo. With my current form, I thought I might be of use for the team, so I took a step forward.
Hope to see you there,
Henry Vergnaud.

Two part 1s?
Great victory though, and probably will forever be one of your best wins, let's just hope you can get a tour or 2 as well
