@sutty68: Yeah, but unfortunately today the guys won't have such luck...
Tour de France, July 2013
The crash from yesterday was heavily talked about in the papers & internet forums all around the world. There's has been some controversy after yesterday's finish where many top riders like Contador, Porte or Cavendish lost their chance for the overall classification or the stage win. Complaints, mostly from journalists and team managers (not really from the riders themselves though), about the too fast route got louder but A.S.O. reacted by pointing out that the fault lies mostly with the riders and not the course itself. In any case, the chances of the Tour victory have drastically decreased in camp Saxo - Tinkoff Bank, where maybe Michael Rogers or Roman Kreuziger will take over command as the leader of the team? If Alberto Contador will have a free role though or be degraded to the duties of super-domestique? Bjarne Rijs didn't want to answer any of this questions after yesterday's stage.
Stage 6
After yesterday’s stage, we see another route suited perfectly to sprinters. Except for the final stage, this might be the best stage for classic flat sprinters like Cavendish, Greipel or Kittel.
The peloton takes it easy today after yesterday’s heavy crashes with much time loss. Going into the final 50 kilometers, the break though has only 2 minutes lead, but that’s mostly due to the fact that only 3 guys are upfront.
Another flat stage, another crash in the peloton. Poor guys. This time a Euskaltel rider is involved too (Vrecer). Say what you will about dangerous descent and all, but when the peloton picks up the pace ahead of a bunch sprint, it’s way more dangerous at le Tour than anywhere else. Amongst others, Zubeldia does suffer the second crash after yesterday – two very bad days for the prior Euskaltel rider.
Belleti, El Fares and Vansummeren have only a gap of a few hundred meters left, as they hit the last 10 kilometers. And of course, they don’t want to give up just yet.
The last kilometers are up. Cavendish must feel still rage after yesterday and Omega Pharma are eager to make today count.
With Boonen pacing for Cavendish, this should be a clear win for them. Or not? Next to Lobato, Kittel is finally showing himself upfront in a bunch sprint. It took long enough. On the left side of the road, Lotto Belisol is pushing forward fast.
Greipel takes the stage win. The second in a row. Cavendish waited too long on Boonen’s wheel and launched his sprint only on the last 300 meters. Not enough to beat the German Supersprinter. Mezgec comes in 3rd. Lobato scores a nice 6th place.

Stage 7
What’s this? Oh, Mountains. Yes, le Tour leaves the flat of the previous 3 days behind and picks up a bit of positiv racing action, after the previous two days offered lots of negative press with all the crashes happening. Some already talk of a decided Tour de France win for Team SKY, but it's still a long way to Paris, and we havn't even started yet.
After a more or less used first week, Euskaltel pick up their spirits at the end of it and try to make the best of this stage. Or at least, that’s the plan.
Martínez took the team’s directive serious and was one of the first riders to attack. With him is Argos’ South African rider Van Rensburg. For now they are only two, but a group of Hushovd, Gasparotto, Petit, Jerome and Boom might catch up soon. But alas, before we start talking, Omega Pharma are eager for the intermediate sprint and this year’s 3rd at Tirreno-Adriatico, Martínez, gets reeled in before a serious gap can be achieved.
Gasparotto has way more luck with breakaways than the entire Euskaltel team. After attempts of Astarloza, Vrecer and Serebryakov, it’s Martínez turn again and he looks to maybe catch up to the new breakaway.
Heading into Col de crox de mounis, the break’s lead is bigger than any other yet in this year’s Le Tour. They rode up fast the, equally steep, former Col des 13 Vents and now have about 8 minutes lead, with about 100 kilometers left to go. At least, that’s something. That bridge looks safe to cross though.
The long descent after the two steep climbs didn’t help the breakaway much. They got caught 10 kilometers from the finish, and as the peloton hits now the final 5 kilometers, things look set for another bunch sprint here in Albi.
It’s the typical tactic by Omega Pharma at this year’s Le Tour. Kwiatkowski sets the pace, Boonen takes the second kilometer, while Cavendish’s prepares himself to sprint ‘em down. Kittel is on his backwheel though, and J.J. Lobato and Serebryakov are close too. Greipel is a bit far back but considering his previous performances, the German might as well take another stage win today.
Cavendish perfects today’s Omega Pharma effort and takes a clear, seemingly effortless stage win. With guys like Kwiatkowski and Boonen pacing for you, anything but the stage win is not acceptable and Cavendish does truly good today. Lobato takes – yet another – 6th place. This is, by my counts, his third 6th place by now. Still, gotta take what you get.

Due to the extremely fast finish with many curves, a split occurred in the peloton, and riders such as Quintana, Wiggins, Contador, Fuglsang, Kreuziger, Pinot, Horner or Porte lose about a minute to the yellow jersey. Nieve and Antón just cross the line in time to not suffer any time loss. This is time loss is unfortunate for the fight of overall classification, but there’s also a good thing about it: Lobato takes back the white jersey, at least for today. Quintana or Pinot are sure to snatch it back from him tomorrow.

Tune in tomorrow when the Tour de France starts tacking on the Pyrenees.
Edited by Shonak on 08-01-2014 20:27
Not bad, not bad at all. J.J. definitely has some good form, given that a lot of riders he beat should do better than him on paper.
And the white jersey back is nice too, even just for one stage.
Anton and Nieve are well placed given there has been a TTT. All those crash are worth something at the end of the day
(I am not just talking about this fantastic screenshot you are capturing each time )
Thanks guys. I agree with each one of you, Lobato is really showing his potential here, but then again, he is the spanish champ.
@duxili: You may not believe me, but I've captured all crashes in the Tour as they basically happened, meaning I didn't have to go back into replay to get them. I particularly liked the mass-crash on stage 5 since I was looking for Cavendish at the front of the race at the time (to position Lobato) and I kept going back and when I found Cavendish, the crash happened like 5-10 seconds later.
"It’s a little bit scary when Contador attacks." - Tommy V
So far it's indeed quite an enjoyable Tour de France.
Tour de France, July 2013
Stage 8
No more Cavendish, no more Greipel, no more Lobato. At least for 2 days as we hit the mountains. And hopefully no more mass crashes either. From Castres we hit Ax-3-Domaines. Yes, that’s right. Le Tour finally hits the Pyrenees and we hope to make our best impression here. Prepare for ikurrinas, prepare for some orange boys and god damn it prepare to finally race some real mountains. But before the riders can race Ax-3 Domaines, they will first to tackle HC.-Cat climb up to Port de Pailhères.
It took “only” about 50 kilometers until a breakaway remotely had established itself. SKY obviously were eager for Edvald Boasson Hagen to take the points at the intermediate sprint, which he took easily in the end. Afterwards, they didn’t pace so much anymore, and riders could finally break loose. With them is Igor Antón, who is right now getting new bottles. Also in the break are Gautier, Vaugrenard, P. Velits, Vuillermoz, Visconti and previous stage winner Roelandts.
Despite serious efforts, the breakaway has merely 3 minutes lead up to Port de Pailhères.
Double attack by Saxo-Tinkoff. Contador charges Kreuziger, while Katusha makes the work for SKY. Van den Broeck is the only one who follows the two Saxo riders. As a reaction, the peloton tears itself apart in a matter of seconds. Not good for Antón, not good at all.
Quintana and Moreno pace for their captains. Ten Dam wants to join Group Contador/Van den Broeck but doesn’t get anywhere far, considering that two mountain goats pace the peloton right now. Nieve is the only Euskaltel-Euskadi rider left in the peloton.
It’s a little reward for all the effort of the break, taking this mountain points, but honestly – we hoped for more. The peloton will soon catch up to the break.
It may be stupid to ride on like this, but Antón makes one thing clear: We don’t ride for overall classification, we don’t ride for tomorrow or yesterday. We ride for today, to take any shot at the stage win we have. Meanwhile, yellow jersey Boasson Hagen is dropped in the descent.
Merely meters left between them as they head into the final ascent of the day. At least the basque fans appreciate it the effort Antón puts into this race as he is the first to start the climb up to Ax-3-Domaines.
Mollema, Van den Broeck and Contador are hot for today and when they pass Antón, our basque rider can think about nothing better than to hang on. But eventually, they caught very fast again. Now Antón will try to help Nieve a bit.
Attack after attack after attack follows… Fuglsang gets away and gets a serious time on the others. Surely, this has also something to do with the fact that he already plays no part in GC anymore after the horrible first week. Quintana might be another lucky guy to make it worth it. SKY don’t take charge of the race, maybe they wait for Edvald Boasson Hagen? Instead, single riders work for their own gain.
Fuglsang is a beast today as heads into the final kilometer and is set to take the stage win. Meanwhile, Quintana is eager to make up some time after the time loss from yesterday.
Fuglsang takes the stage win, but either he is too exhausted to raise even his arms or he still has hopes for overall classification and fights for every second. After an brave relatively late attack and a horrible first week, Fuglsang repays the confidence Astana put in him with the team’s first stage victory. Quintana comes in close second.
Nieve is the first to launch the sprint out of an attack, but Froome and Contador are just a bit faster. He takes 6th – another 6th place for Euskaltel – Euskadi. What’s the matter with those anyway?

Quintana’s attack equalizes yesterday’s time loss and he is merely 1 minute behind Froome again, who is the new leader of the Tour ahead of Mollema and Valverde and Valverde’s teammates Intxausti and Quintana. Nieve profits from the crashes of Contador, Fuglsang or Kwiatkowski and cracks Top 10 for now. Meanwhile, Igor Antón got to the finish about 4 minutes later to Fuglsang, but has the KoM jersey for now.
I'm planning to do an interview wiht Juan José Lobato for the rest-day after stage 9. Send in your questions via private message or here in the thread - that is if you have any.
Thanks everybody. Euskaltel - Euskadi had of course to show itself here in the Pyrenees and at least we achieved that. I think that maybe I should have let Antón rest a bit more so that he wouldn't have lost so much time on the final kilometers, while I may should have attacked with Nieve too. Ax3-Domaine finished way too fast unfortunately and when I realized that this was it (meaning the attack by Fuglsang and later Quintana) we were already close to the finish.
@Blueprint: Yeah, Astana and Fuglsang really striked back and took advantage of their early bad luck. Certainly a way to rescue the Tour de France for the team, and already this early on - Euskaltel - Euskadi is a bit jealous.
@Ian Butler: Haha, thanks. Yeah, Nieve in Top 10 is kinda nice.
@welker: Indeed it was. Mountain jersey for Antón and Nieve not losing time. Could have been way better though.
@duxili: Antón will certainly try again when the time comes. Animating the race - that's what we are here for. Since the first mountain stages are in the Pyrenees we had to show ourselves of course.
@Atlantius: No banana for Fuglsang?
Well, Antón has only 76 MT so he isn't considered a threat by anyone I suppose (Nieve has 77). Antón grabbed the mountain jersey with 5 points ahead of Visconti and Fuglsang (the mountain classification will be posted on stage 9 or the rest day). I wished that he would have lost a bit less time up on Ax3-Domaine but the breakaway never really got enough time for that to happen.
@sutty68: He kept up with the best of them but maybe a bit more initiative would have been good seeing as how Fuglsang and Quintana managed to break free.

"It’s a little bit scary when Contador attacks." - Tommy V
Again I'd like to invite everyone to send in questions to Juan José Lobato for the scheduled interview.
Tour de France, July 2013
Stage 9
Multiple climbs offer a good chance for a breakaway win today, but considering that things in GC are still very tight, don’t expect the peloton to take it easy today. From St. Girons to Bagnere de Bigorre, climbs such as the Anzican or the Col du Peyresoude, will make it tough for the riders, while the long descent might turn either into a bliss or an unwished for last challenge for the possible winners. This is the second mountain stages in the Pyrennes and be sure to watch out for our orange boys.
At the first climb, Col du Port d’Aspet, Vrecer falls in the climbing. Not quite nice for a rider of Euskaltel – Euskadi, but he shouldn’t have any problems getting ack.
Up to the second climb, Col de Menté, Sky already show their dispcline and strength by making the race quite tough for everybody involved. A few riders have already lost contact. Sicard tried earlier to make something happen, but was caught again. Now Astarloza caught up to riders such as Tony Martin, Serpa, Geschke and Feillu. Up front, Andy Schleck rides with Dyachenko and back in the peloton, Daniel Martin attacks.
Following Daniel Martin’s strong attack, Astarloza follows him. Geschke and Feillu are with them, while Dyachenko and Andy Schleck are close for grabs. Tony Martin and the others join too. At the mountain sprint, Martin catches up Dyachenko with his attack. De Greef and Feillu attack too, while Schleck looks set to take the points. Katu advises Astarloza to be smart with his power since riders such as Dyachenko, De Greef, Schleck and foremost Daniel Martin are tough opponents.
Sichard fucks up the bottle carrying pretty bad as he doesn’t manage to get them from the descent to the foot of the next climb in time. Antón and Nieve therefor pull a bit back and all’s fine then, but this stuff can’t happen too often. It’s obviously vital for our riders to stay hydrated. Sicard may can brace himself for a little talk.
Today’s stage is truly not for the faint of heart. Daniel Martin leads the first breakaway up to Col des Peyresourde, while Group Astarloza is around 30 seconds behind. We underestimated the early intense fight. These guys are way better for such a stage than Astarloza. The peloton is about 4 minutes behind but if that will be enough? Daniel Martin is currently ranked 30th with 5 minutes behind.
Many flags are here as Astarloza, Daniel Martin, Andy Schleck & Co. ride up to the summit.
Daniel Martin, Dyachenko, Andy Schleck and De Greef fight for the mountain points.
As they head downhill, they already see the next climb waiting for them and wonderful serpentines look steep and long from here. But you can also see the summit already if you look close enough. 8 minutes lead for the riders. While Daniel Martin looks like he might try to race against the whole peloton on his own.
There’s no denying that Astarloza isn’t up to the task of winning today against such strong competitors. He loses ground on Col del Val Louron-Azet.
Andy Schleck caught up to Daniel Martin and the irish rider attacks right away to secure the mountain points.
Meanwhile, Katusha pace for Joaquim Rodriguez up the mountain with SKY taking over ahead of the summit. Igor Antón loses the mountain jersey today. Daniel Martin is currently also the virtual leader of le Tour since the break has a lead of over 8 minutes. Katusha recognizes the danger more though apparently as they keep up their work even in the downhill.
Fans of both Andy Schleck and Daniel Martin will happy to see them both equally strong at the foot of La Hourquette d’Ancizan, while we are desperately looking out for any orange jersey.
The pace by Katusha (Spilak & Moreno) is brutal to say the least. In a matter of instances, every rider struggles.
Daniel Martin and Andy Schleck fight upwards – neither of them is willing to grant a meter to the other.
A bit later Astarloza gets caught by the peloton. Immediately he tries to protect Nieve a bit.
Without the need to accelerate, Daniel Martin pushes forward and gains a bit of gap on Andy Schleck. The irish rider takes the mountain jersey for good today, but will he also take the stage win? Probably. Fans in Ireland are probably going mental right now. I imagine in Germany probably too.
Following a few minutes, Igor Antón wants to take at least a few points on this mountain summit. He takes 5th, gaining 12 points. At least that’s something.
After a long day, a very hard route, Daniel heads into the final 10 kilometers. His gap is still about 5 minutes. Katusha hard at work back in the peloton, while SKY mainly looks comfortable on their wheels.
Nothing will stop the irish now! Stage win for Daniel Martin and Garmin – Sharp. Obviously there must be something about this route that just suits this rider and truthfully, this is a place where universes collide. Truly a flawless performance by him today and you can see how much he enjoys this moment.
Thanks to a late attack two kilometers ahead of the finish, Nieve and Antón finish 3rd and 4th. This is a nice result but honestly: It was too little today. After all, this was the last mountain stage in the Pyrenees. Seeing how strong and calm both Euskaltel riders looked today, I think it would have been better had one of them shown similar spirit as Daniel Martin. Sending Astarloza was not enough for today but that will be a lesson for the future.
