28.04.2010: Tour de Romandie
Next on our racing schedule is the Tour de Romandie. It's an ideal lead-up to the Giro d'Italia.
This year's edition of the Tour de Romandie goes over six stages. The first stage is a 14km time trial, stages 2 & 4 are mountain stages. Stage 5 is a mountain time trial to Crans Montana, which could be very interesting. It will most definitely decide the final outcome of the race. The whole route should make this an entertaining Tour de Romandie.
Janez Brajkovic hasn't raced since his overall win in Tirreno - Adriatico, but if he can show some of the same form here in Switzerland, he will be our leader for this race. Should he fail to do so, then Kreuziger and Velits can thrive on their good form from the Ardennes classics. The others are here just to get some racing into their legs.

28.04.2010: Tour de Romandie
Stage 1
Versoix - Nyon: 14.0km
Tactics meeting
There are no clear favourites in this race. No particularly big names are on the startlist, and the form of the riders is uncertain. This stage 1 time trial should give a good indication on who we should watch out for.
Dutchman Joost Posthuma pedalled through the rain to set a best time.
The British time trial champion David Millar was disappointing in his first time trial for Discovery. He clocked in 42 seconds behind Posthuma.
Young Roman Kreuziger was better. The 4th placed man from Tirreno - Adriatico finished 10 seconds down on Posthuma, in 2nd place. Nobody was able to overtake the Rabobank rider, who will wear the yellow jersey tomorrow.

Stage 2
Nyon - Moutier: 210.0km
Tactics meeting
The first mountain stage comes directly after the first time trial. It's not a particularly selective stage, but it could be rewarding for some strong attackers. That's where Peter Velits comes into the picture. He should be able to get over all the climbs, and if he finishes in a small group, nobody beats him in the sprint.
A breakaway went as usual, but it didn't contain any important men and was no match for the pack.
On the penultimate climb, Andreas Klöden made a move.
The peloton didn't want to let such a dangerous rider go. In the chasing process, a lot of lesser climbers were dropped. Klöden was caught just over the top, but he had made the peloton much smaller. Still not small enough for a Velits sprint, though.
So, on the last climb, Kreuziger attacked with Velits on his wheel. Not many were able to follow this explosive Discovery combination!
In fact, only three riders could cope with the accelration. David Lopez (EUS), Bailetti (FUJ), and Willems (LIQ) joined the Discovery duo, and the breakaway had 1 minute back to the pack containing Posthuma's yellow jersey. Could they stay away on the long descent?
Several riders, including Danish champion Fuglsang, and Markus Fothen, tried to chase down the escapees.
With 12km remaining, Kreuziger, Velits and Lopez had dropped Willems and Bailetti. 30sec behind the three leaders, a chasegroup with Fuglsang and Visconti were closing in. This would be really tight!
At 6km, the Euskaltel rider Lopez had been eaten up by Fuglsang (LPR), Visconti (LIQ) and Carrara (VAC). The chasers were even closer!
But at 1km, there was still a gap! Could we get a Discovery 1-2?
We sure did! Velits took the stage, while Kreuziger takes over the leader's jersey. What a day!

30.04.2010: Tour de Romandie
Stage 3
Moutier - Aigle: 153.0km
Tactics meeting
As evidenced by his lack of performance yesterday, Janez Brajkovic is nowhere near his Tirreno form. Therefore, Kreuziger is our sole leader in this race from now on. He's looking to keep his yellow jersey through tomorrow's mountain top finish and the mountain time trial the day after. Today is just an intermediate flat stage before the next mountains.
A textbook sprint stage was won by Matteo Carrara of Vacansoleil, who also did well yesterday. Tomas Vaitkus is coming into shape for the Giro, finishing 5th today.

01.05.2010: Tour de Romandie
Stage 4
Aigle - Arolla: 176.0km
Tactics meeting
This could be where Kreuziger cements his overall lead, or where he loses it. The town hosting the finish is the small ski resort of Arolla. The climb is strange, with some flat patches inbetween the gradients. We'll do our usual Discovery tempo riding. If we execute our tactics as perfectly as on stage 2, this could be a good day.
We did what we set out to do. Klöden was the last teammate remaining on the climb after a while.
With 7km remaining, Klöden was also gone. Kreuziger was a bit isolated, but so were the few other riders remaining in the leading group as well.
3 kilometers from the top, Kreuziger attacked. He was going for the stage win!
But Sandy Casar could follow him.
Casar even passed Kreuziger, and other riders also caught up with our leader. Lopez (EUS), De Greef (SIL) and Cataldo (QST) reached him in the final few meters.
Sandy Casar celebrated his stage win! Cataldo came close in the end, but the Frenchman held on. Kreuziger, who obviously made his move too early, finished 21 seconds down on the winner.

02.05.2010: Tour de Romandie
Stage 5
Sierre - Crans Montana: 19.0km
Tactics meeting
We're revisiting Crans Montana, the place where Klöden failed to gain time on eventual winner Benitez during last year's Tour de Suisse. Today it's not a road stage though, but an individual time trial. Kreuziger was looking strong yesterday, but lack of experience caused him to attack too early. He's one of the best time triallists among the GC favourites, so he could seal his overall win today.
David Millar found some climbing legs to take the provisional lead in the early parts of the day. It didn't take long before it was bested, though.
Andreas Klöden lost 5 minutes on the stage where he set up Velits and Kreuziger's attack. Today he had no teammates to worry about, and could do his own thing. His own thing led him to a very solid provisional lead.
Klöden's time looked like it would win him the stage until Bruseghin set out. The Italian caught Peter Velits who started in front of him. Bruseghin climbed the mountain 5 seconds faster than Andreas Klöden!
Yesterday's winner, Sandy Casar, didn't have the same legs today. He looked like getting 2nd overall, but Bruseghin took it by one lousy second.
Bruseghin started the day more than a minute behind Kreuziger in the GC, so our captain's lead was never really in danger. But Kreuziger wasn't content by just defending his jersey. The Czech flew up the mountain to claim a brilliant stage win, almost catching Carrara in the process. Poor Carrara fell from 2nd to 7th overall.

03.05.2010: Tour de Romandie
Stage 6 [Final stage]
Lausanne - Lausanne: 175.0km
Tactics meeting
The last stage of the Tour the Romandie 2010 is tailor made for Peter Velits. An uphill finish which requires some serious sprinting capabilities. Can the Slovakian make it three stage wins for Discovery in Switzerland?
David Millar found his way into the early breakaway. He didn't work much, but his breakaway companions laid down the gauntlet. With 60km left, they led the pack by 11 minutes. Millar was gearing up for an attempt at the stage win, as there would be no Velits at the finish.
Raul Rubio of Fuji attacked 15 km from the finish. Only three riders could follow: Millar, De Lis (EUS), and Corsini (SDA).
On the climb to the finish, Millar had a great position on the Androni rider's wheel!
But all the tactics among the front four meant that the rest of the breakaway caught up.
Sergio De Lis was having none of it though, and attacked under the red kite. Millar got his wheel!
Just before the line, they were side by side!
The Spaniard edged Millar on the line. The Scot ended up just a few centimeters away from his first Discovery win. De Lis took the biggest victory of his carreer.
Back in the pack, some drama occured. Kreuziger touched wheels and went down! Was he going to loose his overall win in the last few kilometers?
Our leader produced a big effort to get onto the tail of the pack, just in time for the finish. Phew!
Some others were not that lucky. De Greef (SIL) and Cataldo (QST) were also involved in the crash. Both of them lost out on their top 10 placings in the GC, which means Velits moves into 9th.

Roman Kreuziger has clinched his first wins for Discovery Channel! The competition was not all that, but a Pro Tour stage race win is still a Pro Tour stage race win. We took home two stage wins, and were very close to making it four. Millar was desperately unlucky in the last stage, and Kreuziger was close in the first time trial.
Now we're gearing up for the Giro d'Italia, for which Roman Kreuziger has proved that he's got what it takes to lead the team. Stay tuned! |

Before you say that, you should remember a certain Ivan Basso who won the Giro by over 12 minutes to the 2nd placed rider last year
But yeah, Kreuziger has a chance, at least more than Brajkovic had last season.
@JDC: That's probably true. When? I don't know
I've already played a fair amount of Giro stages, and I can promise all of you a really entertaining race. It looks like it will be almost as exciting as the TdF09. |

09.05.2010: Giro d'Italia
We've reached the first Grand Tour of the season. The 101st Giro d'Italia is a tough one. The race has four mountain top finishes, two of them extremely hard: the Zoncolan and Alpe di Pampeago. The latter comes at the end of one of the most terrifying mountain stages I have ever seen. There are 91 kilometers of time trial, spread over a prologue and two longer time trials.
The field of riders is considerably stronger than last year. Except Igor Anton, all of the top 10 from last year is present. The dominating figure from 2009, Ivan Basso, is of course here. Basso's former lieutenant, Vincenzo Nibali, is back with his own team, Acqua & Sapone. Last year's 4th place and winner of the white jersey will therefore be even more dangerous this year.
Cunego enters the race he won in 2004 after two year's absence. He's also in the favourites category together with riders like Scarponi (2nd, 2009), Soler (3rd, 2009) and Valjavec (5th, 2009) . One of the best climbers from last year, Domenico Pozzovivo (9th, 2009), could do well, but he can't ride a time trial. Some of the outsiders are L.L.Sanchez, Tony Martin, Danielson and Barredo. For the sprints I only mention Mark Cavendish and Thor Hushovd, but there are many others.
Then it's Discovery Channel. Kreuziger won the Tour de Romandie quite comfortably, and should be able to challenge the top guns of the Giro. Our team is a lot stronger than last year, with good climbers such as Brajkovic, Pereiro and Rubiera. Vaitkus can come up with a surprise in the sprints, but as usual, he has no one to lead him out. We have no particular goals, except placing Kreuziger as high as we can in the GC.

09.05.2010: Giro d'Italia
Stage 1
Cagliari: 8.0km
Tactics meeting
The opening prologue of the Giro takes place in Cagliari. It's an individual rather than a team time trial, which it was last year. Kreuziger comes from a mountain time trial win in Romandie, and should perform well. The winner of the first time trial in the Swiss race, Joost Posthuma, is also in the Giro.
And said Posthuma was the one who got the early best time as he surged through the fields outside Cagliari.
The former World ITT champion and now just German champion, Bert Grabsch, couldn't handle the speed of Posthuma, as he finished a provisional 2nd.
Neither could Roman Kreuziger. Our Czech leader came in 14 seconds slower than Rabobank's Posthuma.
The leading Dutchman had really powered through the course, as not even Columbia's leader Tony Martin could overtake him. Martin did however knock his teammate Grabsch down from 2nd place.
Gustav Larsson produced a decent prologue, finishing as the best Discovery rider in 6th. Posthuma takes the first maglia rosa.

10.05.2010: Giro d'Italia
Stage 2
Cagliari - Cagliari: 181.0km
Tactics meeting
We're staying in Cagliari for the flat-as-a-pancake stage 2. It will most definitely come down to a mass sprint for the line, in which Tomas Vaitkus will compete.
Larsson and Kreuziger tried to put Vaitkus in a good position for the sprint, and they actually did a decent job.
But there is a certain Manxman in the peloton. Mark Cavendish came out on top, with Vaitkus finishing strongly in 3rd place.
