Tour of California

Past Winners

2007 Roman Kreuziger (Liquigas)
2008 Darren Lill (Navigators)
2009 David Zabriskie (Discovery Channel)
2010 Vincenzo Nibali (Liquigas)
2011 Danilo Di Luca (QuickStep)
2012 Mikhail Ignatiev (CSC)

While the Tour of California is not one of our sponsors goals, it is a team goal. We've only managed one win here, with David Zabriskie taking the race back in 2009.

The mountains and hills here aren't dangerous enough to allow for much separation between the contenders and there are two time trials over the course of the race. Therefore to win here means being strong in the time trials while having enough ability in the hills to create a gap over the top time trial specialists.

Fabian Cancellara has always performed well here because of his time trail capabilities, but he has never managed a win as he's lost critical seconds in the hills. Last season his CSC teammate, Mikhail Ignatiev - a strong time trialer in his own right, took home the win. CSC will again be amongst the top contendors as they bring a very strong time trial team with Cancellara, Ignatiev and Jakob Fielder.

For Discovery Channel, we are counting on Jason Donald to be our guy as he has the time trial skills and the climbing abilities. Tyler Farrar will be gunning for the points jersey. Andy Schleck, John Devine, Maxim Monfort and Yaroslav Popovych are all here as well as preparation for the March Pro Tour races with Paris-Nice being Andy's early season target. Still, even in poor fitness, Andy has the ability to surprise here.

Stage 1: San Francisco ITT
i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/Mallorca/TSF/PCM0058.jpg

Short ITT today and the goal is for Jason to lose as little time as possible to the big time trial guns of Fielder, Cancellara and Ignatiev.

Kari Hokkanen sets the first strong time of the day at 5'34" but that will only be good enough for 14th.
i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/Mallorca/TSF/PCM0059.jpg

His time at the top doesn't last long as our Markus Reich sets the new top time at 5'24". We'll see if that holds up.
i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/Mallorca/TSF/PCM0060.jpg

The first real threat is Martin Mortensen who comes through at 5'27", that will be good enough for 6th overall.
i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/Mallorca/TSF/PCM0061.jpg

Jakob Fielder is next to come through and is setting a torrid pace. So torrid in fact that the photographer was not quick enough to snap a shot. He ends up besting Reich's time by 3 seconds at 5'21". That looks very good, but will it hold up?

Next through for Discovery Channel is our tour hope, Jason Donald. He does extremely well, coming in just behind Reich at 5'25". This bodes well.
i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/Mallorca/TSF/PCM0064.jpg

Everyone watches as Cancellara hits the road, he is the most likely guy to top his teammate, Fielder. He crosses the line at 5'22" and Fielder's time holds.
i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/Mallorca/TSF/PCM0065.jpg

Andy Schleck hits the road. As a stage racer, he is an excellent time trialer but he is low on fitness. Nevertheless, he does well and finishes at 5'28", good enough for 7th.
i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/Mallorca/TSF/PCM0066.jpg

Defending champ, Mikhail Ignatiev, is the last guy who could top Fielder. He comes in only fractions of a second better than Reich, though, at 5'24". Fielder celebrates his stage win. While CSC celebrates an awesome showing that results in them grabbing the top 3 spots.
i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/Mallorca/TSF/PCM0067.jpg

Last capable man through for Discovery Channel is Popovych. He does much better than expected at 5'30", grabbing 8th. As a result, Discovery Channel puts 4 guys in the top 10.
i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/Mallorca/TSF/PCM0068.jpg

Jason Donald ends up 5th on the day, only 1 second behind Ignatiev. A great result!

As promised. These are all of the riders with an average rating of 80 or above. Worth noting that of the riders on this list, one (Humberto Amilcar) is a regen. To me, the true test of any career game is whether or not quality regens are created as others retire. For PCM 2007, figure the earliest a regen could emerge to begin development was 2008. That gives maximum 5 full seasons of development by the time you get to early 2013. From my standpoint, to have a top 10 in the world cyclist emerge over that time is pretty good and speaks well for the regen system in the game.

It's the database, in this case PCM Spain. If you think about it though, who knows exactly how a cyclist will evolve over the course of 7 years? Even 1 year. One year ago who would have said Wiggins would be 3rd at the Tour de France during the 3rd week?

Tour of California

Stage 2: Sausalito - Santa Rosa
i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/TSF/PCM0001.jpg

Flat stage with a slight uphill climb 35km from the finish. That shouldn't impact the outcome, though, and we expect a sprint finish which means Tyler Farrar is the guy today.

An early break attempt consisting of 10 riders includes the aging George Hincapie. Great that big George can still compete.
i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/TSF/PCM00022.jpg

The pack reacts, though, and hauls them back in. Only 3 manage to escape: Cattardico, Longo Borghini and Garcia. They are soon joined by Civero.
i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/TSF/PCM00032.jpg

As the peloton reaches the hill before the finish, a few riders think they'll try their luck: Sutton, Gusev and Borrajo go. They have no chance. Sutton's decision to attack is odd as he should be one of the favorites in a mass sprint.
i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/TSF/PCM00052.jpg

The break is caught and it will, indeed, be a sprint finish. Farrar manages to catch the wheel of Napolitano.
i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/TSF/PCM00072.jpg

Grabbing Napolitano's wheel ends up looking a bad move. Danilo decides to have a snack and drops back so Farrar switches to the wheel of Kiendys.
i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/TSF/PCM00082.jpg

Farrar is indecisive and switches again to the wheel of Greipel as the sprint starts.
i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/TSF/PCM00102.jpg

Not only has Tyler been unable to get good position, he also has made a huge mistake in earlier leaving the wheel of Napolitano. As Farrar struggles to move forward, guess who is going to win?
i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/TSF/PCM00122.jpg

That's right, it is Napolitano who takes the stage. In fact, Credit Agricole dominates the sprint placing 4 in the top 10.

Stage 3: Santa Rosa - Sacramento
i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/TSF/PCM00152.jpg

Another flat stage, another chance for Farrar.

After several attemps at a break which are denied by the peloton, a group of 3 (Jacobs, Hary and Fieber) get away. Yesterday CSC lead the chase, defending yellow. With a CSC man in the break today, it will be interesting to see CSC's race strategy.
i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/TSF/PCM00162.jpg

CSC controls the pace of the peloton, holding the break at around 7 minutes, not letting them get any further and not chasing any harder. With 95km to go, Discovery Channel moves forward to take charge of the chase.
i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/TSF/PCM00172.jpg

Fieber attacks and opens a 2 minute lead over the rest of the break. CSC definitely won't chase now.
i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/TSF/PCM00182.jpg

Discovery Channel, with help, catches Fieber and we move towards the sprint. Farrar learned his lesson yesterday and grabs Napolitano's wheel.
i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/TSF/PCM00202.jpg

Turns out this may have been a bad day to pick Napolitano's wheel. Danilo is well back as the sprint gets started.
i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/TSF/PCM00232.jpg

Farrar has no chance (nor does Napolitano). Mortensen will get the win today with Farrar finishing a very disappointing 8th.
i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/TSF/PCM00252.jpg

Farrar's failure today hurts on two levels: 1) no stage win, 2) Mortensen taking the stage and the 20 second time bonus moves him into yellow, 18 seconds ahead of Donald. With his time trialing skills combined with the potential for him to get further time bonuses in sprints, he is now a huge threat to take the Tour.

Somehow managed to not export race results.

I love career sports management games. You have to figure no matter how strong the management game, once you get past the first season it becomes pure fantasy. Nobody can predict how athletes will develop, especially young ones.

My other favorite game is Football Manager, which I'm sure a lot of people on this board enjoy as well. That game is about as good as it comes with regards to talent scouting, etc. Still, thinking back over past games and how players have developed in real life, sometimes they get it right and players they predict will be very good indeed turn out to be very good. Sometimes they get it horribly wrong (Tonton Zola Moukoko or Andri Sigporsson anyone?). That's just the way it is.

Talking about scouting riders, I was playing my Hearts (don't ask) career in Fifa 08 today. I signed a scouted defender who turned out to be a 79, which is the second highest scouted player I've ever found (I found a english goalie once who was an 82). His name was K.Dickerson, nothing strange about that right.....well wrong, he was Spanish and his first name (I don't remember it exactly) was Croatian. I really am starting to be impressed with the name generation in PCM's scouting system.
