Euskaltel Revel in Double
Spanish team top of the charts
By: Les Clarke
Stage 2 and the flat desert tour continued with a more gruelling 138km stage that left all the teams with no doubt that the conditions could be the deciding factor when trying to find the tour winner.
Euskaltel the Spanish team found themselves in a strong position through the latter part of the stage, a position where by Spanish duo Isasi and Urtasun would claim the top 2 places respectively.

With various riders fading as the race drew to an exciting close, the Euskaltel team had 3 riders in the final sprint putting them in prime control of the stage. Outside of the Spanish dominance Rabobank had a strong finish, which kept them 3rd in the team standings but still firmly behind the Americans Team Columbia - High Road.

Individually the overall top 4 placings are still held by Team Columbia riders, as Mark Renshaw takes the yellow jersey off team-mate Bert Grabsch , as the German and Italian Pinotti are just 2" behind the Australian.
Elsewhere Lars Boom of Rabobank can thank his strong finish in stage 2 to assume control of the young rider standings, with De Haes of Silence-Lotto tucked in behind.
Post Race Comments:
Mark Renshaw (Team Columbia - HighRoad): "I am looking for to the pressure that comes with wearing this jersey. Everyone wants a shot at leading the tour and for stage 3 that will be me. But I am honest enough to understand that this tour has a long way to go, with alot of strong teams and riders still heavily interested in taking home the prizes"
Al Kooba (Garmin-Slipstream General Manager): "Patour withdrew due to exhaustion... the heat affected him badly and with poor management of his feed intake we all felt it was suitable for him to withdraw and prevent any lasting damage"
