Quick Update

Alessandro Ballan won the Ronde:

And Astana actually won a classic, Sergui Ivanov breaking away for Gent-Wevelgem glory:

Pino Cerami to come.

GP Pino Cerami

A hilly Belgian semi-classic (being optimistic) on a circuit with a steep climb each lap.

i284.photobucket.com/albums/ll27/wackojackohighcliffe/PCM0001-62.png

Rik is leader and I will be the option if it comes down to a bunch sprint. Despite Gent-Wevelgem taking place the day before, there was a strong field, including five ProTour squads.

i284.photobucket.com/albums/ll27/wackojackohighcliffe/PCM0002-53.png

After a few failed attempts a break managed to make it stick, 6 getting away.

i284.photobucket.com/albums/ll27/wackojackohighcliffe/PCM0003-53.png

The pace was hot and a lot of people were struggling on the climb. However, Rik was finding it quite easy and contemplate making a move. On the penultimate ascent, with the break just in fron, Rik went with his gut and attacked.

i284.photobucket.com/albums/ll27/wackojackohighcliffe/PCM0004-49.png

He tore past the break and started a solo run, riding at an infernal pace. The bunch worked hard but stopped once they had brought the breakaway back, assuming they were the last people in front. Soon they had been informed by their directeur sportifs but that small time allowed Rik to increase his lead, still riding hard ahead.

i284.photobucket.com/albums/ll27/wackojackohighcliffe/PCM0005-46.png

It looked like Rik would take the win as we came into the last few kilometres and I stayed tucked in at the head of the peloton, behind the Kio-Ene lead-out train of Gavazzi, by far the best sprinter present.

i284.photobucket.com/albums/ll27/wackojackohighcliffe/PCM0006-40.png

It was all over before the sprint even started, a great victory for Rik and the team, especially Klaas who protected him all day. He pointed to his grandmother as he crossed the line (in heaven not on the finish line arch or in a blimp).

i284.photobucket.com/albums/ll27/wackojackohighcliffe/PCM0007-30.png

I sprinted well, beating Gavazzi to the whitewash but the finish line came a little too quick as I was unable to outsprint Eeckhout.

i284.photobucket.com/albums/ll27/wackojackohighcliffe/PCM0008-27.png

The team was overjoyed: a win and 2 riders on the podium. The whole team also went up for the teams classification and we spilt the bubbly that evening. Pro cycling felt great.

Columbian National Road Race Championships

Held in Neiva, these are the first flat national champs anyone can seem to remember. A very small climb each lap but it is mainly a city circuit. I am racing solo here but there are pairs from Europe and two full Colombian teams out to win. It's going to be interesting; it's going to be tough.

i284.photobucket.com/albums/ll27/wackojackohighcliffe/PCM0011-16.png

The plan was to follow an attack containing a rider from both full teams, Colombia es Pasion and UNE - Orbitel. A big attack went which had the right riders in but some couldn't hold the pace. I ended up with an UNE - Orbitel rider.

i284.photobucket.com/albums/ll27/wackojackohighcliffe/PCM0012-15.png

However, that attack was to be shortlived. I followed another break with the correct credentials but for some unknown reason the two Colombian teams were still chasing.

i284.photobucket.com/albums/ll27/wackojackohighcliffe/PCM0013-9.png

We were dragged back within 5km. As I reached the bunch I overheard a Colombia es Pasion rider shout 'we got that little European rat back'. It was a domestic conspiracy! They resented us for leaving the country to make a better living than them so they were trying to deprive us of the victory, even if that meant that their rider wouldn't win. Somehow though, two 'Europeans' managed to slip into a break of three, Mauricio Ardila and Felix Cardenas. They gained a 13 minute gap with an UNE - Orbitel rider. I just prayed to God that he didn't win.

i284.photobucket.com/albums/ll27/wackojackohighcliffe/PCM0014-6.png

I rode on the front of the bunch as Colombia es Pasion were'nt pulling for some reason. It was in vain. Victor Hugo Pena clipped off the front of our group with 30km to go and he wasn't seen again.

We were still 6km from the finish but at the head of the race a ferocious sprint was starting.

i284.photobucket.com/albums/ll27/wackojackohighcliffe/PCM0015-7.png

Ardila managed to squeeze Juan Carlos Lopez of UNE - Orbitel out of the running but couldn't beat Barloworld's Cardenas. A 'European' win! Some consolation.

i284.photobucket.com/albums/ll27/wackojackohighcliffe/PCM0016-5.png

After being so active early on I didn't have much left for the sprint for the minor placings. When the rider in front of me slowed I couldn't get around him.

i284.photobucket.com/albums/ll27/wackojackohighcliffe/PCM0017-6.png

I settled for a top 10. Not a great outing.

Olympias Tour U26

This is a big chance for me to get onto a bigger squad and therefore contract for next year. The 10-stage Dutch talent-spotting race concludes the first half of my season and is a good race for the team. Two time trials (for Klaas), 6 pancake flat stages (for me) and 2 hilly stages (we'll see what happens when we get to those). There's a quality field here including Lars Boom, but we were horrified to see that any age was being allowed this year. We could have brought Rik, this being a perfect race for him.

Here is the team we brought instead:

i284.photobucket.com/albums/ll27/wackojackohighcliffe/PCM0004-50.png

The first stage is a 7.6km ITT around Vaarsveld with a sharp ascent and descent. It will decide the first leader and could set a precedent for the whole tour.

I was off first of our team and we knew we were in for a good day when I came in not far from the pace, despite being a terrible tester. I eventually finished 57th of 96, only 23 seconds off the pace.

It was Michael Polazzi who then set the next best time for our time. He rocketed into the then lead with a time 15 seconds faster than me. He ended up 12th.

Boom was through not long after and stole the lead from Michael by 8 seconds. He was the definite favourite for the stage so Michael was happy with that result.

Klaas was last out on course. According to the splits from the team car he was 6 seconds down at the top of the hill. However, on the descent he turned the power on full.

i284.photobucket.com/albums/ll27/wackojackohighcliffe/PCM0005-47.png

He carried his momentum and, going under the 1km to go barrier, he was equal with Boom's time. He was flying and we were on the edge of our seats. But he tied up in the last 100m. We thought he might still have it but he lost by under a second.

Klaas vows for revenge next time round.

I have to say I'm really pleased with that result on extreme, although we all know prologues are easy. Klaas and Alejandro are nearing top form and Klaas has just levelled up so I think he could win the mid race TT

Olympias Tour Stage 2

Flat and 140km. With the win bonus a sprinter could take over yellow. I'm looking for the stage win as I will be in all the flat stages.

Georgios Tentsos, Blaz Jarc, Stefan Huizinga and Olivier Giesecke made up the break as we sped from Anholt to Gendringen.

i284.photobucket.com/albums/ll27/wackojackohighcliffe/PCM0001-64.jpg

It was not to be for the breakaway however. Coming into the sprint I was in far from a perfect position, Klaas wearing the sprinter's jersey behind me.

i284.photobucket.com/albums/ll27/wackojackohighcliffe/PCM0002-55.jpg

I was moving fast and, as we reached crunch time in the sprint, I began to make my move to the front.

i284.photobucket.com/albums/ll27/wackojackohighcliffe/PCM0003-55.jpg

I just ran out of steam before I could pass Jurgen Roelandts so I was forced to settle for 3rd, the big belgian taking the win:

Olympias Tour Stage 3

Another sprinters stage today. And another result I'm not 100% happy with. This hasn't gone so well for me and I really want a win soon. That's the thing about us sprinters - we need the confidence, the ego. We need to win so we can win.

A breakaway attacked the bunch and were allowed to go clear early. They spent the day negotiating countless pieces of street furniture:

i284.photobucket.com/albums/ll27/wackojackohighcliffe/PCM0005-48.jpg

The attempt turned out to be in vain though, they were brought back with 15km left to ride. As the leadout trains did their duty I managed to latch onto one:

i284.photobucket.com/albums/ll27/wackojackohighcliffe/PCM0006-41.jpg

I followed it to the front and thought I'd found the perfect place to launch my sprint. I kicked but faded straight away. I poked my nose out in front and immediately began to drop back, sprinting desparately to hold my position.

i284.photobucket.com/albums/ll27/wackojackohighcliffe/PCM0007-31.jpg

On the line it was Koerts who took the win in a very close finish. I managed 6th. Not what I came here for.

Olympias Tour Stage 4

A stage that had some big positive impacts and some big negative impacts on our team. It was 183KM of flat with the odd steep rise but still no King of the Mountains points on offer.

A break of four with two chasing them attacked at km 0 but they were to be only a side role in a day with one leading character: 60km/h winds. 96km left of the stage and it was already splitting up - I was in a front group of 23 with Laurent Fontaine and one of the best sprinters there. However, Klaas had been caught out, it splitting while he was swapping shoes at the team car. We were confronted with a dilemma. Team Manager Dirk decided that I should stay in the group and Klaas would have to hope that his group bridged. I felt sorry for Klaas as his GC position trickled down a windy drain.

It was only with 80km to go that we realised the full extent of the carnage: behind our group there were stragglers in small groups - ones and twos struggling in the fierce winds. We knew that this was where the Tour could well be lost.

30km to go and I was deserted, Laurent cracking after doing some sterling work for me. The pace was still high, Jurgen Roelandt's Davitamon team piling on the pressure at the front. When he'd run out of team-mates he even worked on the front himself. I was vigilant and covered all the moves that went.

There were 9km remaining when Ubbink - Syntec's Arne Hassink took off. I set off in hot pursuit and began to claw back the lead in a bid for the stage win, the rest of the group glued to my wheel. I was driving a hard pace and the group was breaking apart in my wake, but Hassink had done no worl so far today and was driving hard ahead.

Coming into the sprint, Hassink still had 50m or so. I was in a tricky situation: I had two guys on my wheel now, one of them, Andersen, was a good sprinter, and I had Hassink up ahead. I could chase early and catch him to probably get passed by Andersen or wait and probably not pass Hassink.

I decided on the first option.

But I decided too late.

I had underestimated my power - neither of the two on my wheel could pass me but I just couldn't get past Hassink, losing by half a bike length on the line. 10m more and I could have passed him. 10m earlier in fact.

I was left hoping that we 4 had a time gap but it was judged that we did not. This ruling almost sealed Boom's victory. He was in the lead group and was by far the strongest TTer and puncheur. It meant I would have to be content with another podium.

Olympias Tour Stage 5

A flat 143km jobby from yesterday's stage finish in Huugowaard to the football town of Heerenveen. I don't feel great so who knows what I'll be able to do. A time bonus would be great.

The breaks were still going at it but still they were unsuccessful. The best Greek cyclist, Georgios Tsentsos was working in their once again.

i284.photobucket.com/albums/ll27/wackojackohighcliffe/PCM0001-65.jpg

Once again their efforts proved futile and it would come down to a sprint. Michael Polazzi, who'd been riding well and taken top 10's in the sprints and TT, fell badly and was ridden over by a few other members of the group as the action came to a head.

i284.photobucket.com/albums/ll27/wackojackohighcliffe/PCM0002-56.jpg

Meanwhile, I had infiltrated the leading Fondas train and was finally well positioned, if a little far forward.

i284.photobucket.com/albums/ll27/wackojackohighcliffe/PCM0003-56.png

My legs weren't great but I still managed to go past the lead-out man and, on an ultra-tight home straight, four of us were going head-to-head.

i284.photobucket.com/albums/ll27/wackojackohighcliffe/PCM0004-52.png

As I had expected, I proved not to have the legs for it today but, aided by the thin and dangerous finish, I salvaged 3rd behind Koerts again.

Olympias Tour Stage 6

Flat.

As well as that it had the first KOM points of the tour so Fabio Polazzi was instructed to go in the break and get that red mountains jersey.

i284.photobucket.com/albums/ll27/wackojackohighcliffe/PCM0006-42.jpg

As you can see, he did a good job. Thankfully for a tiring Fabio and me, the break didn't survive. Fabio dropped off the back and I moved to the front. Kio - Ene made the train of the day and I was in there in the blue young riders jersey, ahead of points leader Koerts.

i284.photobucket.com/albums/ll27/wackojackohighcliffe/PCM0007-32.jpg

Both Koerts and I tried to go round Maurizio Biondi but it was the Italian's day and sadly not mine. I beat Koerts for second.

I didn't know until I met my DS after the stage...

I've closed the gap in the sprints:
Rank Name Team General
1 Jans Koerts TIME - VAN HEMERT 87
2 Alejandro Serna PÔLE CONTINENTAL WALLON BODYSOL - EUROMILLIONS 82
3 Jurgen Roelandts DAVITAMON - WIN FOR LIFE - JONG VLAANDEREN 72
4 Maurizio Biondo KIO-ENE - TONAZZO - DMT 70
5 Marko Kump ADRIA MOBIL 48
6 Marvin Van der Pluijm UBBINK - SYNTEC CYCLING TEAM 44
7 Peter Van Agtmaal FONDAS P3TRANSFER TEAM 40
8 Thomas Berkhout RABOBANK CONTINENTAL 37
9 Pieter Riis Andersen TEAM GLS 36
10 Boy Van Poppel RABOBANK CONTINENTAL 30

The team takes home a second jersey with Fabio Polazzi in the mountains jersey:

Name Team General
Fabio Polazzi PÔLE CONTINENTAL WALLON BODYSOL - EUROMILLIONS 6
Jan Almblad TEAM GLS 4
Peter Olde Dubbelink TEAM LÖWIK MEUBELEN 2

And I have a 3rd as the best U26. Although I will probably lose both that and my yellow jersey in tomorrows time trial I will enjoy wearing them, the first of my pro career.

The first of many, I hope.
