STAGE FOUR:
19,8 km flat TT now - flat as a pancacke. Hopefully Backstedt can go well. The mountain stage tomorrow will be decisive for my hope of an overall. Arvesen can time trial, so he might take some time here? Svein Tuft and David Millar (Garmin) should be favourites alongside Pinotti (Columbia).
Håvard Nybø sets the best time, starting as 26nd rider.
Soon Luis Leon Sanchez sets a new best time. But he missed a split in the peloton in the previous stages, and is out of the overall competition I would assume.
Eventually Svein Tuft leads David Millar by 5 seconds when top 10 starts. But it is overall leader Bradley Wiggins who takes the honours. Marco Pinotti stopped it from being another treble for Garmin.
Backstedt finishes 7th to be my best ranked rider. He is now 2nd overall (but can hardly be expected to even try to keep a good position in tomorrow’s mountain stage.
My dedicated climber is lousy in the time trials and finishes 3rd from the bottom...

2th will be good. But a first place will be better. A mountain stage can help you |

I strongly doubt the mountain stage will do me any good, but we are fit so we'll have to see. |

By the way. I see that I will have double bookings later on in the season, for example Scandinavian Open and Tour of Denmark. What is the correct way to handle these things in career mode, you thing? Should I chose one race to be in and simulate the others - or should I ride all the races myself and just write that it was my evil twin who was in charge? |

Just write about the important race and the good result. The other race. Choose by yourself if you want or not to play them. |

Who has been winning elsewhere?
David Blanco won Vuelta at Tachira by a decent margin. The Palmeiras Resort / Tavira-rider won several stages, and took time from his opponents in both hilly stages, mountain finishes and the time trial.
Australia has arranged their national championship. Cadel Evans took both. Winning by 33 seconds over Michael Rogers in the time trial, and coming home alone in the road race. Rory Sutherland and Michael Rogers took the next two places.
La Tropicale Amissa Bongo is another exotic race one can choose to start the season. In a slightly surprising twist, the victory went to Jarlinson Pantano from Colombua es Pasion Coldeportes. His winning move came in the second stage where he and fellow escapee Matt Cronshow (Rapha Condor) finished 42 seconds in front of the bunch. Pantano took the win, and the bonus seconds secured him the victory. The other stage wins went to Robert Hayles (Team Halfords) and Yauheni Hutarovich (Francaise des Jeux) who split the other stages between them.
The Cancer Council Classic in Adeldaide attracted lots of strong riders. Team Columbia – High Road was a cut above the rest, taking the double with Mark Renshaw and Greg Henderson. Hilton Clarke joined in on the podium. |

POST 13: Into the Mountains – Stage five
We have no real climbers, so this will not be a good day. Deignan is our best hope of achieving anything. Maybe he’ll try a breakaway, if there is anyone attacking on the penultimate climb. Zubeldia, Jufre and Siutsuo is the hot tips of the day. Let's hope the climb is not the most challenging.
McCann watching for attacks.
An attack is launched on the first short climb. Remme is there. Can he take the mountain points?
He did. He is virtual leader of the mountain competition. They were reeled in shortly after, and a new attack came. Our escapees could not follow at that point. But a little later Pavel Brutt bridged over – with our guys on his wheel. But Astana, Fuji and Caisse d’Epargne was not happy and towed them in. There were quite a few attepts to get away before Remme managed to join in a breaway that got a couple of minutes. Iker Camano (Fuji) is the strongest climber present, while Remme is best situated in the overall before this stage. We’re obviously going for mountain points. He needs to take home all the points to have a chance. Then he will have 24 points before the final climb. The winner of the statge there gets 20 points.
Tchanliev is also after the points it seems, but Remme counters and wins the poins on the second climb as well.
With 36 KM to go and the break starts climbing the penultimate climb, they have 3:09 on the peloton. That’s nothing when looking at the last climb.
In the pack, there is an attack which Deignan follows. Meanwhile Remme secures the climbing points of the third mountain sprint.
Third sprint - and looking for things to come.
One seriously steep descent!
On the final climb things are getting hotter. Steensen (Saxo-Bank) attack – no one follows.. Deignan’s group is caught., while Siutsuo attacks. It is Katusha that does the pulling in the pack. Steensen is off. 4 km from finish, he has 1:29 on the rest. But Zandio, Siutsou and Jufre is attacking! Many burned out riders today. All of mine! But there is actually a ‘mass’ sprint with a group of 23 riders coming into the final kilometer. Jufre and Siutsou can start the sprint with some seconds gap, though.
And it is Jufre in front of Siutsoi and Zubeldia.
Deignan finished with the front group, but there was some strange time gaps in the end, while Arvesen and Remme came in the pack. Jufres victory means he has the mountain competition, as there is no points to get in the last stage. I’m happy with Deignans performance. Arvesen and Remme was not expected to be there, so that is no problem. Arvesen still our best guy overall, at 15th.

Yeah, but I was actually quite happy about the stage - until I saw the time gaps. Unreasonable it seemed. But hey. Didn't really matter anyway since Deignan does not compete for the overall here. |
