The Tour of California organisers have suddenly decided that killing the race would be a great idea.
To achieve this, they asked the UCI to change the race from mid-february where it's the biggest race and gets awesome participation to mid-may, at the same time as two much bigger races.
Unless the Volta a Catalunya organisers get their wish for their race to be moved to a different calendar spot, the Tour of California has just commited suicide.
I agree.... I don´t understand this move at all....
Who has a controlling stake hold in the ToC? ASO. What were the reasons for moving the ToC according to the organisers? As a pre-tour training event. ASO vs RCS anyone?

Thing is, I can see Levi and a few others actually going to the TOC. still not a good idea though

Well, Armstrongs new team will go to the ToC, as will all American based squads. You have to remember that teams like Garmin can field some strong teams regardless of being in the Giro at the same time.
(And if I reckon right, Armstrong will take Levi with him.)

Well, not confirmed yet by any means, but do you really see any other outcome than Johan going with Armstrong to set up a new American outfit? And why would Levi split from that?

You're missing the point I was trying to make, people
There's also the Volta a Catalunya at that time. California will become the third choice race. Except for Dutch and French teams. For those it'll be 4th choice...

hurrah for Race Suicide.
February was ideal really.
1) Weather not brilliant, but OK
2) Doesn't clash with much that top teams are also intrested in.
3) It gained more intrest because of the time of year (and armstrong). If the race was in May all attention is at Giro and Volta a Cataluyna.

I read somewhere that the volta a catalunya is moving its date it and im pretty sure the uci will allow it. I think it will move to just before the vuelta personally or early season. So it wont be 3rd choice race at all as the uci have probably looked and thought the vuelta a catalunya wants to move date so it is sensible to have the ToC in may. |

I think it's a stupid move anyway.
Why would any race organizer think it's a good idea to schedule it at the same time as the Giro...
Good for the Volta a Catalunya though. :lol |

Catalunya MIGHT move to september when the Vuelta moves to April in 2011.
Catalunya is a big big race with a very old palmares and very prestigious and contested. It won't be moved just like that.
So, if the organizers of Catalunya don't get their wish of having their race move to september, it's buh-bye California.

Also, the Tour of Belgium and the Bayern Rundfahrt are around that time, so those teams will not likely go to california as well |

Why would the Vuelta organisers move it to April, most teams will be bussy with the cobble races or preparing for the ardennes.

To hot in september in Spain and i think that time of the year is the time of the year when people get time off and go to a nice vacancy and low ratings for the vuelta...i think.

22nd-ish March - Milano-San Remo
1st half April - RVV+PaÃs Vasco+Gent-Wevelgem+Roubaix
2nd half April - Amstel + Fleche + Liége
10th-ish May to early June - Giro
to this:
22nd-ish march - Milano-San Remo
Rest of march - RVV+PaÃs Vasco+Gent-Wevelgem+Roubaix
Early April - Amstel + Fleche + Liége
Mid April - Early May - Vuelta
20th-ish May to 10th-ish June - Giro
that's how it was pre-1995 and it worked better
I also think they should make something else go back to how it was in the old days: the Tour de Suisse and the Dauphiné should have some days between them so riders can do both.

Absolutly fantastic bad timing for a Vuelta. Especially since everyone who rides the Ardennes will go for the Tour, then, and the sprinters wont prior it. |
