You'll Never Walk Alone

A plan, a plan. I knew I had to make a plan. Instead of sitting at home wondering what to do though, I decided to be proactive. I talked to my friends and contacts in the peloton and asked a favour of them. Tom Southam was pretty useless as his team was based in Australia and that felt like a step back for me. Ed Clancy tried to give me a hand but Landbouwkrediet were full for the season, their budgetary constraints already telling in the small amount of races they could enter. Julian Dean said that Credit Agricole just couldn't afford to risk on a rider they barely knew. I was at my last resort. Dave Harrigan.

But he came through for me and got me an interview at DFL-Cyclingnews-Litespeed.

I turned up in my best suit for the interview and answered each question with ease. However, as I had recounted the issues with Babes Only, they were worried that I would fall out with the team. I was stuck as to proving them wrong. But a moment of brilliance saved me. 'Talk to Welter de Gans and Alex Coutts'. Welter had been my saviour at Babes Only and, although he had stayed with the others so he could keep a place on the team, Alex Coutts had been nice and understanding behind closed doors. I was sure they'd come through for me. I left the interview happy.

Three days later I got the call, while out on the bike. I hopped off.

'You got the job'.

*Merry Jig*

'Thankyou so much. You won't regret this.'

On the Saturday I met up with the team. They were kind and welcoming and happy to have a good old bitch about the guys at Babes Only, including 'that stuck-up poof Blanchy'. I was so angry and happy I didn't give a shit about the homophobia. The squad is made up from Englishmen, Belgians and Aussies, with a sprinkling of Dutchmen, a Colombian and a fellow New Zealander, Jeremy Vennell. I took to the great team atmosphere like a duck to water and moved into the team house. The best thing is I've achieved one of my goals: I'm riding with childhood hero Nico Mattan. Come on DFL!

My first race with DFL and I was off to Estonia with the leadership of British climber Dan Lloyd and Matti Helminen, Rhys Pollock, British Champ Hamish Haynes and David Harrigan for company. Up against us were Bouyges Telecom and in-form puncheur Jerome Pineau. The EOS Tallin GP is a hilly race but with no major climbs, just a day of ups and downs. We'd have to play our cards right if we wanted to win.

i284.photobucket.com/albums/ll27/wackojackohighcliffe/PCM0001-52.png

A strong break of 7 went, almost perfect size for a breakaway, and they soon had a big lead. Our plan went like this: with most of the teams represented in the escape apart from Bouyges, if we could force them to do all the work then Pineau would be isolated at the finish. We let them do the work and at 20 km left the break had a gap of 2 minutes. Bouyges had used up their last man who was just hanging on to the group. Pineau was alone. I rode up to the front and gassed it, splitting the race apart.

i284.photobucket.com/albums/ll27/wackojackohighcliffe/PCM0002-47.png

It was mayhem behind me. Matti Helminen was protecting Dan but other riders were dropping off the back of the group like flies. By the time my legs were burnt out with 8km left, the break was caught and the group had been reduced to 30 tired men. As I relaxed the pace and everyone breathed a sigh of relief, Dan Lloyd put in a lightning attack.

i284.photobucket.com/albums/ll27/wackojackohighcliffe/PCM0003-46.png

He flew away and was out of sight before anyone had started organising a chase. When Ceramica Flaminia stepped up to the front of our group it split again and there was soon a group of about 8, including me, off the front. Once a gap had been created the guys behind pretty much sat up and allowed some of the guys I had dropped back into their group.

i284.photobucket.com/albums/ll27/wackojackohighcliffe/PCM0005-39.png

It looked like Dan would win and, just in case of catastrophe, I kept myself ready for the sprint. Local Aug led out for his Flaminia team-mate Khalilov and I kept in his wheel. I hung onto his slipstream and was dragged to the line.

i284.photobucket.com/albums/ll27/wackojackohighcliffe/PCM0006-32.png

Dan Lloyd wins! And who's that rounding the corner behind Khalilov?

It's me!

It's June already and, with a large chunk of my season spoiled by Babes Only, I want to start winning now. I've got a chance with the HC-ranked Skoda Tour de Luxembourg. It's a hilly stage-race with a strong Rabobank team but most of the riders aren't at their peak, which gives me a fighting chance. I hope I can do well.

The race kicked of with a 4km hilly prologue in the city of Luxembourg, climbing to the hill-top fort. With a lack of major time-triallists I feel that today is a day I can get up the front. When I hit the course, Mathieu Sprick was the early leader. I charged out of the starting gate, psyched up.

i284.photobucket.com/albums/ll27/wackojackohighcliffe/PCM0001-53.png

I was flying through the first kilometres on my new Litespeed Blade, not a hint of the effort I was making showing up as lactic acid. Through the 3rd kilometre though it was biting and by the final 500m I was dying. My legs were tying up and, although I pushed through the pain, I didn't think I'd done enough. I rolled over the line, exhausted. I looked back and pumped my fist. My name was flashing at the top of the board. I went and sat in the leaders chair.

Błażej Janiaczyk came and nicked my seat within minutes but I was still pleased to have done so well. It looked like I would take 2nd until Moises Aldape flashed through 4 seconds slower than Janiaczyk. But, 3rd on the podium. Not half bad.

I approached the stage with relish; it was a little hilly but ended in a flat sprint so I thought I should be able to get over the hills and contest that finish. I was astonished by the team, who said they would be happy to work for me to protect my GC position if i thought I was up for it. I did. So they did.

i284.photobucket.com/albums/ll27/wackojackohighcliffe/PCM0001-54.png

Another good thing with this team - my beautiful New Zealand champions jersey has arrived and I glad to be in it. Not allowed the opportunity to wear one at Babes Only, which angered both me and the NZCF (New Zealand Cycling Federation). It certainly outshone Erki Putsep's Estonian champions jersey (behind me in pic)

i284.photobucket.com/albums/ll27/wackojackohighcliffe/PCM0002-48.png

In racing news, the breakaway was a strong one, fuelled by the time-trialling powerhouses Torsten Schmidt and Dmitri Champion. They carved out a 9 minute lead, only to be pulled back by a vigilant Action-Uniqua team, defending Błażej Janiaczyk's lead. After an easy enough day in the saddle, protected by Columbian Wilches and Evan Oliphant, I was well-placed at the start of the sprint.

i284.photobucket.com/albums/ll27/wackojackohighcliffe/PCM0005-40.png

It looked good for a while and I was poking my nose in front momentarily. But then I wobbled a bit, lost momentum and couldn't build my speed up again to get on the podium.

i284.photobucket.com/albums/ll27/wackojackohighcliffe/PCM0006-33.png

Janiaczyk took 3rd, meaning he increases his lead over me, while Ravard and Poos overtake due to time bonuses from intermediate sprints and in Poos' case stage victory. But Aldape drops behind me so I only lose one place to fourth.

Overall:
i284.photobucket.com/albums/ll27/wackojackohighcliffe/PCM0008-24.png

Hopefully, I can take back some time in the sprint tomorrow and then we'll see where we go from there.

wackojackohighcliffe
To the flat we go but in Luxembourg it is never really flat - there are always deceptive rolling roads and little bumps to put you out of your stride.

I spent my early ride watching the break leave and wearing a hideous jersey that someone else didn't want to wear. I also ended up talking to Ed Clancy, again, and Paul Manning about their utter domination of the world track championships in the team pursuit. They caught the Australians in just over 3000m with a stunning display of perfection. It's the Olympics next year and I wouldn't look past them.

After a rather uneventful first part of the race, everything went pear-shaped in the final 20km. The break were re-entering the group, tired and dejected. I guess it was my mistake: I let Lemoine of Credit Agricole get too close and... wham! I hit the deck before I knew anything about it.

Apparently nobody knew what happened but I was lying dazed at the side of the road. My hip was throbbing and cars were honking and hooting all around me. But Cameron Jennings was here, waiting for me. He helped me up and I got gingerly back on my bike. I started to turn the pedals and I felt OK so I started a vain attempt to get back to the group. At the start Cameron protected me from the wind and gave his all in regaining my position in the peloton.

i284.photobucket.com/albums/ll27/wackojackohighcliffe/PCM0009-22.png

But he was shattered and, with 12 kilometres, he couldn't continue helping me. I dropped him with a thankyou and started to pick my way past the left-over riders who couldn't hold the harsh pace of the peloton, including the Action-Uniqua train.

i284.photobucket.com/albums/ll27/wackojackohighcliffe/PCM0010-15.png

I was still fighting through hordes of dropped domestiques as I reached the finish line. I thought that I might not have lost too much time, but, according to Cam, I was on the ground for 2 minutes and the pack was whipping up a storm at the front.

i284.photobucket.com/albums/ll27/wackojackohighcliffe/PCM0012-12.png

Frenchman Alexandre Pichot won the stage and I lost 4'01, finishing as I had spent most of the day, with Paul Manning. I apologised to my team-mates and thanked Cam. But instead of them berating me for my mistakes they were empathetic and consoling. Still, looking at the stage results, I didn't feel great.

Time to soldier on. The team had decided that we could still try for GC with it very close at the top and my countryman Jeremy Vennell well-placed in 20th. It was the queen stage today and I was happy to help Jezza over the hills at the end.

i284.photobucket.com/albums/ll27/wackojackohighcliffe/PCM0001-55.png

At the start I was just trying to stay sheltered and hope I was strong enough. My hip was sore and I tried to take my mind off it. But I just couldn't. So I muscled down and fought the pain. It was a hard day but when I dropped back for water I asked DS and cycling ledgend, Eric Vanderaerden, to put some good tracks on. Fighting through the pain with some cracking ska bands complete with melodious, dominant trumpet riffs and harmonising slide guitar, was much better. And before I knew it we were in the hill section and I was called to the front. Time to do my job.

i284.photobucket.com/albums/ll27/wackojackohighcliffe/PCM0002-49.png

I kept Jezza in the bunch when he was struggling over the steepest inclines and towed him to the front when the bunch was splitting. I encouraged him and drove him onto the final hill.

Then Poos' team piled on the pressure and gapped us. It was a select group at the front and I knew, if we had any hopes for the overall, we had to be there. I took ot on myself to ride off the front of our group and make the junction. My hip was almost ripping out of my body by this point but I finally made the front group, dragging most of the others with me. And then it was time for the sprint.

I pulled Jezza past a slightly startled peloton and into a premier position for the sprint.

i284.photobucket.com/albums/ll27/wackojackohighcliffe/PCM0003-48.png

Sadly, the Gods were against us and Jeremy couldn't pull of the win, finishing 6th, with me just behind him.

i284.photobucket.com/albums/ll27/wackojackohighcliffe/PCM0004-43.png

But he holds his position and can hopefully move up tomorrow. We need to take something from this tour after a lot of effort. I've got a lot of work with the soigneur tonight to hopefully improve the condition of my failing hip.

Despite my hip I still managed a top 10 today:
