Greg Lemond. A freak of nature with a VO2 max above 90 Shock

The last cyclist to compete for both GT's and Paris Roubaix.

He would also win the most bitter cyclist of all times competition Pfft

Hmm... I love Ullrich, but him being the eternal second place, he is hardly the greatest ever. I could say Vinokourov for his ability to attack constantly, but he never won anything. On that basis, i could say Pantani too, but i just wont. That said, im not old enough to remember Lemond or anything before him, so for some dim reason im saying Virenque.

i'm going to say bjorn leukemans, if not for his tactical blunders he would have undoubtedly won a dozen or so tdfs and paris roubaixs by now.

i think isso will agree with me

What are you talking about? He was the first guy to focus 100% on TDF and only TDF. He was the first of what we now would call a GT rider.

4th in 1985, 9th in 1992 (Paris-Roubaix), he rode the Tour both those years and won it three times in between.

Michael Boogerd, he always opened the race, attacked several times, and did the most of the leading work in the chase group behind himself, at the same time! Which is also the reason he always lost, naturally.

1. Actually his teams were never the strongest. In the TTT especially he always lost loads of time.
And what does that have to do with him dropping Ugrumov, Virenque, Pantani, etc?

Anyway, Indurain is surely in my Top 10 all-time list, but I would never rank him as high as Merckx and Lance. If I knew more about Coppi, he could challenge Merckx for the top spot, so he closes up the top 3.

Merckx
Armstrong
Coppi
Vlaeminck
Gimondi
Indurain
Pantani
Poulidor
Bartali
Kelly

Honourable mentions go to Charly Gaul, and Joaquim Agostinho.

That list is....well, let's just say I heavily disagree. There are so many names I'd put there ahead of many of those.

I also think That Thys should be mentioned, he could "easily" have been the first with 5 TDF wins, as WW1 took 6 years or so away from him.

Mainly the stupid rules that made the winner a question not of who was best, but of who was luckiest. If not for that, he would've won a bucketload of tours.

Ullrich97
It's hard to compare the champions of the 50's with guys now, the sport has changed so much. The racing calendar, equipment, training methods e.c.t are so different its hard to make a fair comparisn.
I firmly believe Ullrich had the potential to be the greatest, if only he had armstrongs determination he would be unstoppable. In some ways its a real shame that he has been unfairly hounded out the sport.

Frederico Bahamontes is up there, simply for this:
In his first Tour appearance in 1954, he destroyed the competition on the first major climb in the Alps (Col de Romeyere), then stopped for ice cream and waited for his competitors. His teammate, Jesus Lorenzo said: "He's a very good climber, but completely mad." With an iota of tactical sense, he could have won the Tour

From Torelli's book (yes, I know, I quote it all the time Pfft):

The Romeyere was the first major climb of the first day in the Alps. Bahamontes took off in a white heat, panicking Bobet and the other leaders who felt they had to keep the Spaniard in check. When they got to the top of the mountain they found Bahamontes sitting on a wall eating an ice cream that a spectator gave him.

Over the years his explanations for this behavior have changed: he wanted to play a joke on the others, he needed mechanical assistance.

At the heart of the matter was Bahamontes' fear of descending. Once while riding alone as an amateur he had fallen down a ravine into cactus and no one knew of his plight.
He never wanted to repeat that episode and so waiting for the others to arrive and give him company on the descent made sense to him. Bahamontes finished the day forty-ninth, 10 minutes behind the Bobet group.

EDIT: By the way, it's "Federico" Smile (I know, weird, huh?)

Bahamontes was a great cyclist, but a wierd man.

Also I have deebly respect for guys like Anquetil and the other guys at his time, that thought it was bad, to drink during a raceShock
