I woke this morning to find that Vinokourov had taken a Tour victory from team-mate and compatriot Andrey Kasheschkin, while courageous Spaniard Alejandro Valverde had soldiered on until the Pyrenees with a shattered scaphoid, an injury that would keep him out for a while, before having to tearfully abandon. A step or two above us maybe.
Our 3rd stage in Wallonie is one of the hardest and it is unlikely that Nico will keep his jersey with riders like Theo Eltink and Cyril Dessel here.
I spent last night writing out race plans for my assistant who will take charge in the Post Danmark Rundt, a race that will be decided most likely by the TT and I give Matti Helminen the leaders position because of that.
I knew everything would happen on the final climb but I doubted Nico would be able to follow the attacks. When none of our riders bar Nico could make it in a 30 rider split, I knew we were in trouble.
On that last ascent a stage that had been void of attacks suddenly burst, full throttle, into life. Young Dutch starlet, Theo Eltink, made the move that made the race and, behind him, others scrambled to keep up.
Young Belgian starlet, Maxime Monfort, managed to reach his back wheel as did French elder statesmen and quality climber, Cyril Dessel. Lanbouwkrediet's Bert de Waele completed the group of four.
Nico was left chasing behind with the two Christophes: Brandt and Dettiloux. He was made to chase by the others, something that annoyed me though I told him he had no choce but to soldier on, but he couldn't close the gap on the leaders and lost to Dettiloux in the sprint.
The winner of the day was none other than Theo Eltink, who wrestles the race lead from Nico, with his breakaway companions in hot pursuit.
A dissapointing stage from our point of view but Nico just isn't that good in the hills. 5th overall at the finish will be a very good result, if he can hold it, and he still remains in the points jersey.

Another hilly stage today, where Detilloux is our personal dangerman.
An early break got away and looked like it would stay away, but it was pulled in at the start of the penultimate climb, where most of our riders parted with or slid to the back of the group.
Nico stayed on Detilloux's wheel but I couldn't develop much of a strategy without any team-mates for him. Thankfully no attacks were launched on that particular obstacle.
However, come the final hill, a restless Cyril Dessel attacked, attempting to steal the lead.
Others followed and a lead group of 6 settled down to do the work. And for us the warning lights were flashing! Dettiloux was present! I had to think of a plan and fast.
Then it came to me. 4th overall Bert de Waele, in a team really needing a result and with some strong riders with him, was in the group. I told Nico to attack and provided some much-needed bait for a chase.
And it worked! Nico stayed ahead of them until about 5k to go, where, with the gap down to 15 seconds, they kept going, looking for a win for their sprinter Nico Sijmens. Dettiloux was caught and, although 4 of the break stayed ahead of the pack their was no time gap.
Cyril Dessel took the win and, by virtue of his higher finishing position, took over the race lead from Theo Eltink by a slender 0 seconds!
Nico couldn't finish in the top 10 but it mattered little I thought, a tactical masterstroke bringing 5th overall back from the brink.

Not too big a day for us, but a huge one for Dessel and Eltink. The rider who is first over the line of those two will most likely take the honours.
There are no major climbs today.
The break was hauled back early but after a puncture and a frantic chase Nico was tired. He raged to the front for the start of the sprint, with an eye on Tyler Farrar, the man I had told him to mark.
Thankfully, Farrar didn't seem up to much and Nico was able to hold his wheel to the finish. It was looking like he would win the green jersey until, with 50m left, Nico Sijmens burst from the pack for an unbelievable win and to steal the jersey!
But who's that on Haddou's wheel?
It's Eltink!
And the yellow jersey is behind him!
GC victory for Theo Eltink!

Our next race is the Giro de'll Apennino, a hilly Italian race. I doubt we have much of a chance with some big names here but it's a sponsor goal so... here we are.
No breaks went so it would be the favourites to duke it out after a fast pace from the peloton. As the last of our riders vacated the group Nibali and Piettropolli attacked, with Garzelli and Mazzanti snapping at their heels.
They formed a leading four and stayed together till the finish. This proved a good move for Stefano Garzelli who stormed away from the others to take the chequered flag with his superior sprinting skill.
Our best rider was Nico Mattan in 57th. Not a great race for us. I hasten to add that there was little I could do.

The Giro del Lazio is quite an important Italian one-dayer and a big result would be nice to appease the sponsors. The hills are in the middle of the race so, if we can stay with the main group over them, a good result is possible.
The break was hauled back before the hills meaning the pace was quite relaxed while we climbed. Not long after we had reached the flat again Continental Tour leader, Stefano Garzelli, attacked and took Massimo Giunti and Andriy Grivko with him.
As I have previously mentioned, Garzelli is a far superior sprinter and it looked like he was destined for the win. And he was, the others unable to attack him and he dominated the sprint as predicted.
Back in the pack, I told Nico to lead out Hamish, the stronger sprinter, and gave Dan Fleeman a free role. Nico propelled Hamish forward but he couldn't perform as well as hoped. However, Dan found new form and pipped Robbie Hunter on the line for 10th!
A good result for Dan, which bodes well for the British Champs

Today is our big day. The sponsors want to make a big impact on the British public so this, and the upcoming Tour of Britain, is very important. It's a hilly course around the Trough of Bowland and we bring the largest squad in the race, with Dan Fleeman, Dan Lloyd, Hamish Haynes and Evan Oliphant.
After the first climb of the beautiful Trough of Bowland Ed Clancy and Kristian House attacked and, under my instructions to cover the break, Evan Oliphant followed and passed them, the others not keen to work with our team.
I told him to keep going and find a rythmn. In the peloton, if you could call it that, no one was working and the gap went up and up.
It went up as he flashed down the descent, a little distracted by the views....
.....it went up as Evan rode solitary through the valleys....
....it went up as he was cheered through the outskirts of the village of Chipping ......
...and by the finish in the centre it was nearly 11 minutes!
Victory in the British Championships!!!
After congratulating Evan through the earpiece I went back to the race behind for the podium. All of our other riders were in the 2nd group, unlike Mark Cavendish and Paul Manning, who couldn't deal with the hard ascent of Bowland. I told Dan Fleeman to make his move with 3k to go and force the others to react. But they didn't. David Millar didn't seem to care so Hamish went away to take 3rd and complete our domination!
123!
I couldn't believe it and neither could the team. Dan Lloyd, a workhorse in disrupting any sort of chase, was thanked whole-heartedly and the team spirit showed in our embrace.
Evan was emotional hearing the national anthem on the podium and I felt so proud. It was then I realised. I'd taken DFL-Cyclingnews.com-Litespeed to both their first stage win and their first one-day win! This was going well.

I can tell you know.
On the evening of the British Champs I was given the job I went for for next season. I can't tell you much more about it, but I have spent the last 2 weeks tapping up riders.
Back with DFL, next up ... Tour of Britain. |

Tour of Britain
The Tour of Britain is the biggest race, for us, that I will be in charge of. The team are well prepared as I have trained them to peak for now. Mattan or Helminen will probably be leaders, but others have their chance. Gert Vanderaerden is sprinting for us while the supporting acts are Dan Fleeman, Evan Oliphant, Hamish Haynes, Jens Mouris and Berny Sulzberger.
The route is a rather unchallenging affair, the London TT will probably make a lot of difference with 'testers' such as World Champ Fabian Cancellara and Vladimir Gusev. But there are a few hills, including the finish in Bradford and the Scottish stage.
Hopefully we can make an impact with a stage or a high overall placing.
Well, on with the show! |

A prologue in London, taking in some of our most famous landmarks, copying the Tour route, kicks off the 2007 Tour of Britain. We were feeling hyped and hoped to keep in touch with Cancellara, who is trying to peak for the Worlds.
Our squad pulled some phenomenal times out of the bag and it was Nico Mattan who took an early lead with a superb time. I was thrilled watching him fly past Big Ben (an the apparent cottage that is the Houses of Parliament next to it )!
The weather could not dampen our spirits and we were still happy when Gusev went a mere 4 seconds better thean Nico. But news filtered through that Cancellara was on course. And on form.
He stormed round, taking a whopping 30 seconds out of Nico and draining all my superlatives... and a few of my swear words.
But, looking on the bright side ... 3 riders in the top 10! A great start. We have some time to make up on Cancellara if we want yellow but it can be done. Again, a great start.

The first road stage of the race is from the Palmer Park velodrome in Reading to Hoglands Park in Southampton. It heads down the Test Valley before winding it's way through the beautiful New Forest until a twisty finish in Southampton.
There are a few small hills today but we will not look for the Mountains jersey as Gert has peaked and is ready for his first win of the season.
Roger Hammond followed an attack by Steve Cummings and Ed Clancy, but it was the former Paris-Roubaix podium that made it away from the peak and settled into a steady rythmn. For the first 100km the pack took it easy and allowed us to relax and get ready for a fast finish.
Hammond flew past Hatchet's Pond alone.
The final 50km were very fast. CSC were hammering along so I told the boys to tuck in and move up in the last 5k.
Hammond looked like he might still make it, but he was caught at the entrance to Southampton.
Hamish took Gert to the front and I told our Belgian sprinter to find Nico Sijmens wheel. Nico Mattan, meanwhile, was shadowing yellow jersey, Fabian Cancellara.
With 200m to go Gert was sitting on Robbie Hunter's wheel, with Hamish in his. Nico had got boxed in behind but tore his way free and was fighting through the tiring lead-out men.
With 100m left I screamed at Gert to go and he dug deep to try and pass Sijmens, with Hamish still benefiting from his slipstream.
Could he do it?
Yes he could!
A stage victory! Fantastic. The DFL owner was over the moon about it, as was the whole team. We celebrated long into the night. No, only joking, we had a quick glass of champagne, ate dinner and had an early night. 1st from Gert, 3rd from Hamish and a surprising 4th from Nico.

Tomorrow we cross Exmoor with some tough climbs, but it may well end in a sprint. |

Exmoor provides us with two hard hills, but they are too far from the finish to make enough of a difference, I feel. Hopefully the organisers will provide some more difficult terrain for next year's edition.
On the first climb of the day, a very steep affair, Russell Downing continued the British representation in the breakaways, leading away a 10-strong group.
The CSC boys had to do a lot of work to pull them back and, with an epic backdrop, they did some epic work.
But, by Taunton, they were back in the folds of the peloton.
Nico was better placed, wearing Cancellara's points jersey, come the lead-outs, and Gert was, as ever, looking good in Helminen's wheel. Oliphant, resplendent in his beautiful British champions jersey, led Mattan into the finish.
Gert saw an opening early and I told him to go for it, while Nico followed in his slipstream.Gert opened a huge gap!
Gert distanced Nico in the process but gave him a good head-start on the rest. Gert was beginning to tire and Haedo looked dangerous, but he held on to take 2 sprints from 2, though Haedo edged out Mattan from 2nd.
Gert noncholantly sipped from a bidon as he crossed the line. Mattan's 3rd place gained him 8 useful seconds and moved him into 2nd place.
