Track Preview
We have two riders who have also made themselves a big thread on the track. The first rider is Daniel Holloway. Dan is a great cyclist who is more famous nationally. He is starting to make himself a name around the world and the more experience he gets the better he gets.
Our other Track rider is Taylor Phinney. Phinney is a top track cyclist and most likely the best track cyclist the USA has ever seen. He will definitely pick up some great results for The USA.
This is our Track Schedule for January:
January 2008
6-Daagse van Rotterdam, Rotterdam (Ned) Sprint, Keirin
Bremen Sechs-Tage-Rennen, AWD-Dome Bremen (Ger) Keirin
Revolution #19, Manchester (GBR) Keirin, Sprint World Cup III, Los Angeles (USA) Sprint, Keirin, Elimination

Cadel Evans will be putting on the Australian Champion Jersey. We had no participants so we had no strong tie to this race and I only found out of the results by this email:
Silence Lotto has started off the season strong and we will most likely see this jersey in upcoming races including the Tour Down Under.

Tour Down Under Preview
Sprint Favorites:
***Boonen, Hushovd, Bennati
** Pozzato, Ballan, Zabel, McEwen, Arvensen
*Maaskant, Ongarato, Fischer, Sentjens, Geslin, Backstedt, Baldato, Zberg
Hill Favortites:
***Pozzato, Pineau, Barredo
** Chavanel, Ballan, Vansummeren, L. Sanchez, Devolder
* Casar, Gerrans, Trofimov, Joly, Florencio, Colom, Guitirrez, Maaskant
Overall Favorites
*** Pozzato
** Ballan
* Boonen
Stage 1
A flat stage with a small hill at the beginning. It will come down to a sprint finish or a break might take the win. What I want to do is get a man in the break and take the early mountain points so we can put on the Mountain Jersey. We also want to set up Holloway for the sprint.
Stage 2
Stage 2 is pretty hilly and will be a hard to stage to win in the break and will probably be another stage for the sprinter. Again we want to go for the mountain points by getting a guy in the break. We will also try to set up Holloway for a decent results.
Stage 3
Another totally flat stage that we will again try to get a man in the break and hope that we can get lucky and get a nice win for the sponsors. Holloway will need a perfect lead out if he wants a chance to win.
Stage 4
Very similar to Stage 3 and is most likely going to be a chance for the sprinters to try and gain as much time from the bonuses as they can so that they will have a chance to survive the hill.
Stage 5
The most important stage that ends in a pretty tough hill where all the favorites will attack. Caleb Fairly will try to attack on the hill and hope that he can get lucky or that he can stay with the leaders and get a decent result.
Stage 6
Stage 6 is a short completely flat stage that will surely go to the sprinters. Only 84 kilometers and if we position Holloway well then we might get lucky.

We have scouts all over America and we may have found our first young talent. Japhet Garfield is a 21 year old stage racer who has a chance to be a part of our team. This is what the scout said
“He’s not as gifted as other young riders, but he’s got real fighting spirit and a good head on his shoulders. He could have a role to play as team member.”
We will watch him as he is worth watching but he is nothing special but we will keep an eye on him.

Tour Down Under Stage 1
The small hill in the beginning of the race was a perfect opportunity for Caleb to break. He looked back at me and I could tell in his eyes that he was saying “tell me when” I waited until I saw someone else accelerate and I came over the ear piece and yelled “GO GO GO!!!” Immediately he was off and was getting away from the peloton rapidly.
After Caleb had clearly gotten away from the peloton he needed to fight with the rest of the escapees so he could hold take the King of the Mountains Jersey. Each rider had their turn at trying to get away so they could take the points. No one could shake anyone off but Tom Leezer was able to barely edge out Fairly for the Mountain points.
It was partially my fault that he didn’t take the points because I should have been paying attention and let Fairly know that Leezer was coming up behind him. A little while later Fairly asked for the car so he could get his water and tell me what was on his mind. He wasn’t too happy but it was such a small loss that he was able to keep his mind on the race.
There was a group of three that was ahead of Fairly’s group and they were working well together compared to Fairly’s group who couldn’t stay together.
With about 20 kilometers to go the peloton captured the group with Fairly. Fairly’s legs were giving out so he said hello to all his teammates and then fell off the back and would make the long and lonely journey to the finish.
Holloway was able to show off his jersey as the Junior USA National Championship. He took a water bottle and prepared for the upcoming sprint.
After the last escapees were caught everyone prepared for the sprint. Holloway caught the wheel of Zabel and was in great position for a high ranking finish.
Holloway just didn’t seem strong enough. With 1 kilometer to go it was unclear who would win but at the finish McEwen was stronger than everyone else and celebrated his first victory of the year.

Stage 2 was hilly throughout and no one seemed to want to attack. The intermediate sprint came around and Fairly snuck in to the group and although he wasn’t able to take any sprint points he was able to sneak ahead of the peloton with a small group and gained a lot of time on the peloton.
The breaks had combined for a large group. Fairly was the only guy from our team in the break and we thought that things would go better if we were able to get another man in the break so I asked Summerhill over the earpiece if he would be willing to get in the break. He gave me the thumbs up and he rapidly went downhill and was catching up quickly.
It was no time before Summerhill caught up to the rest of the break and it formed a large group and we were the only team with two players in the break.
The group worked well together but immediately after they got away the gap started coming down and it looked like Caleb wouldn’t even be able to take the mountain points. So I told him that he should attack again and see if he could survive until the mountain points.
He took the points and will be able to wear the KOM Jersey tomorrow. They were all caught and with about 30 kilometers to go the last person was caught.
Holloway was in good position up front and was looking for someone’s wheel to find.
Unfortunately he wasn’t able to find a wheel and had to sprint without any help. Amazingly he weaved through and was able to take a 10th place finish and is now 3rd in the Young Rider Standings. McEwen was in terrible position and a few other sprinters were just too good for him. It was a close finish between Zabel, Bennati, and Hushovd. Who would win.
It was Zabel who edged out by about an inch or two who takes his first win of the season.
