Day 5 and a murderous climb up Mont Serein, part of Mont Ventoux, to finish the stage. Only the strongest climber will be around at the finish.
46km out and Zaballa shakes off his breakaway companion and faces the long climb ahead alone.
15km out and Zaballa is still over 2 mins clear but has been out there for a long time. Suddenly the yellow jersey attacks, and Chavanal is countered by Béltran and Gomez Marchante.
12km to go and Soler is still contemplating his move. He goes for a drink only to find the water bottle emptying. A poor oversight on the team. We decide to let him sit on the train of Caisse d'Espargne as they power up the climb.
6km left and the brave but exhausted Zaballa is caught and passed. Sanchez, Barredo and Voigt try to bridge up to the yellow jersey.
4km out, and all the main contenders are here incl. Sanchez, Dekker, Barredo, Moreau, Lovkvist and Bruseghin.
700m left and its Moreau and Dekker that have sprinted away from the pack. But Voigt has got Moreau's slipstream and the big German looks menacing.
It's down to the last few metres as Voigt dives for the line around Moreau. Has he got there!?!
He hasn't! To the delight of the crowd the French champion takes the stage ahead of Voigt with Dekker just back in 3rd.
Soler rolls in about 1' 30" down, and fuming over the water incident. We'll have to try and calm him down later.
With his 2nd place, Voigt takes the race lead and has a nice advantage over Barredo.

172km to Sisteron with a few hills along the way. Puncheurs and sprinters will target this one after having to suffer up part of Mont Ventoux yesterday.
De Nero led a breakaway for quite some time and we managed to get Cheula involved in it, but with still over 70km to the finish, Cheula is a spent force.
As the pack got themselves organised for the sprint, someone touched wheels and went down, bringing a massive amount of riders with him. Those unlucky riders included such names as Hincapie, Lovkvist, Gutiérrez, Freire and Zabel.
Up front, Lowik starts his leadout a full 2km out. He probably was unaware that his team's sprint king was picking himself off the ground at the time.
With the reduced competition, Ballan and Bettini proved too strong for anyone else and it was the former who stayed ahead to take the stage win.
The crash victims limp in having lost around 2' 30".
Soler should definitely move up a few places on GC due to this crash.

The penultimate stage of Paris-Nice 2008 and its a 200km trek to Cannes. Multiple small peaks give many opportunities for breaks and attacks so this should be an interesting stage.
Cardenes was part of a group of 15 that attempted to escape early on, but were dragged back to the pack by a untrusting peleton.
A group of 14 did manage to get away later and with 80km left to go, have opened up an 8 minute gap to the peleton.
A second group attacks and includes Vladimir Kapets.
So far Rabobank have kept and eye on things without riding the peleton too hard.
Later, Quick Step and CSC decide to help out to catch the escapees.
The final climb and Spanish champion Rodriguez attacks. Soler follows Dekker's lead and counters also. Barrero, Casar and Kloden jump into action also.
They join up with Karpet's group...
...and have the 14 escapees in their sights.
2km out and Soler tries to match Dekker's sprint, but he just isn't fast enough.
The young Dutch superstar takes a most impressive win. He's opened up a little gap on the rest it seems. Soler is part of the chasers but they have pulled clear of the peleton, hopefully improving his GC placing.
Dekker is harshly judged not to have opened a sufficient gap and the others are given the same time. How vital will this be?. Soler moves up just the one GC spot.

The final day and this year's title will be decided by a 131km loop around Nice, taking in the Col de la Porte along the way.
Zaballa, who collected a massive 40 points in the KOM competition yesterday to take the jersey, leads the field up the Col de la Porte and seals the win in the climbers rankings.
With just less than 50km to, 4th place overall Chavanel lauches an attack. It seems a long way out to go from here and no-one else follows.
33km to go and Voigt sees the danger to his yellow jersey. He attacks with LL Sanchez and they blow right past a contented Zaballa. Voigt started the day 38" seconds ahead of Chavanel and has a 1' 06" lead to chase down.
As others such as Samuel Sanchez attack, Soler is going to wait for the final climb and keeps an eye on rivals such as Moreau until then.
15km from the line and we're on the final climb. Soler says go! and we quickly catch up to Casar and Schumacher.
Soler keeps powering up the through the field and eventually joins up with Voigt, LL Sanchez and Dekker.
Chavanel is still giving it everything he's got as he knows he chasing the GC win now also. Barredo and Samuel Sanchez are giving chase and closing. At the start of the day, Barredo was 3rd overall, 22" ahead of Chavanel with another 8" to Sanchez. The victor of Paris-Nice 2008 must be between these 3.
Soler is giving chase with Voigt and not only can see the finish line, but the 3 riders ahead as well. Voigt must know his GC hopes are in serious trouble now.
Chavanel shows tremendous strength to keep going to the line and take the stage. Barredo takes 2nd and maybe even the GC win, while a despondent Sanchez has to settle for 3rd best.
Soler leads the charge to the line, but the 51" time marker signals Voigt has lost the jersey.
A decent if somewhat uneventful top 15 place for Soler but today's stage shows that his fitness is improving and he can climb with the world's best when on song. The last stage heroics of Chavanel were inspiring and Dekker showed his immense potential on a quite few occasions.

The "race of two seas" is a 7 stage coast-to-coast race in Italy and the traditional lead up race to La Primavera, the Milan-Sanremo momument classic. The race is normally won by either a specialist classics rider, or a GT contender.
We've sent Pfannberger as our main representative to this race, but have not set any goals for him. The other team members are instructed to try to get into breakaways.
The first stage is 160km long and, despite a few minor hills along the way, normally results in a sprint finish.
With just over 40km left to ride, Mazzanti is out alone and hoovering up the KOM points. He still holds a 3 minute lead to the pack.
The peleton is driving hard now and the major teams send their domestiques up to catch Mazzanti.
12km to go and Mazzanti is caught and the sprinters jostle for position. Cooke was dropped on the last climb so we won't be taking part.
Coming under the 1km banner and O'Grady heads Boonen with Van Avermaet launching his challange.
The tough Australian holds on from Van Avermaet. O'Grady takes the race lead.

Just over 200km long today and a short climb 20km from the finish that may tempt a few of the GC contenders to try their luck. If so, we intend to be with them with Pfannberger.
Sure enough on the last climb there are lots of attacks. Pfannberger attempts to go with them but these are very talented riders he's trying to catch. He joins a small group containing Caucchioli and Australian champion Cadel Evans.
Up front Gilbert, Devloder and Kirchen work to extend the lead, while double World Champion Bettini attacks.
Bettini is hauled back by Leipheimer with 6km to go.
Pfannberger is still chasing the first group and has been joined by Valverde.
Devolder attacks and powers to the line! He has only 1500m to hold on and take the stage.
Kirchen closes up but it's in vain as Devolder takes the stage and the GC lead.
* no results exported unfortunately

Yeah but its still very early in his training schedule and he's far from fully fit in either training or race fitness. By being such a small team we really have to focus on our sponsor goals and high profile races and things only really get going for us with the Giro in May. Soler should be in top condition for that and hopefully a top 10 is possible there. With it being such a mountainous course this year, it could really suit him and limit the damage sustained in the TTs.

The third stage finishes up the steep Montelupone after 197km of racing. There is a sharp climb 30km from the finish also so the 'mountain goats' of the peleton will contest the finish for sure.
The day's first climb and Duenas is part of a group of 14 that have broken away from the peleton.
65km to go and Duenas' group are over 5 minutes clear and working well together.
Up the penultimate climb and Duenas' is still in the leading group as the peleton, with Pfannberger near the front, chasing after them.
15km to the finish, and Pfannberger has taken a closer rank.
Starting the final climb Caucchioli attacks and shoots past Pellizotti.
The difficulty of the Montelupone finish is evident. Caucchioli leads but Di Luca is after him.
Di Luca is really strong today and takes over from Caucchioli as he enters the final kilometer.
He slows a little towards the line but holds on comfortably and takes the win ahead of the veteran Davide Rebellin.
Di Luca takes over on GC, ahead of Kirchen and Rebellin.

166km and no crazy climbs today so one for the sprinters and puncheurs again most likely.
Cooke said he wanted to try a break today but with still 68km left, he says he's not going to keep the same pace up to the finish.
At the finish Paolini proves fastest, ahead of O'Grady and Elmiger. Of our riders, only Pfannberger could stay with the peleton.
Di Luca keeps hold of his lead as we head into tomorrow's ITT.

A 26km ITT provides today's test, and with the top 10 populated by riders without strong TTing skills, we may see one of the big names move up on GC position.
Pfannberger tucks into an aerodynamics position downhill as Leif Hoste takes an early lead on the timesheets.
World TT champion Fabian Cancellara looks in awesome form today. He's fastest at the first split and is about to pass his 2 minute man, Nocentini.
Contador has been very quiet so far in the race as Leipheimer has led Astana. Perhaps he'll set a good time today.
Cadel Evans is a very strong TTer and hopes to move up significantly in the overall standings after today.
Valverde sets off and we see that Cancellara has demolished Gusev's time by 48"! He started the day 1' 31" behind Di Luca, but where will he be at the end of the day?
Race leader Danilo Di Luca knows by now that his leader's jersey is under threat. Leipheimer and Evans set the 2nd and 3rd fastest times respectively but still can't get to within 30" of Cancellara's great mark. Di Luca started the day 49" ahead of both Leipheimer and Evans on GC today, so needs to finish within 1' 21" of Cancellara's time to keep 1st position.
And he does it, but only just! Things are tight at the top now and Cancellara moves right up into 4th. Only 5 seconds separates the top 3 now.

Thanks! Yeah they are in there still. I try to counter as much as I can and always try to follow in a sprint (still haven't figured how to lead out properly) but with these below top-class riders at their current fitness levels (and at this difficulty level - Hard), they often just can't match the others.
I like it that I'm not winning very much now as it makes sense with the way I've planned our season and the type of team Barloworld is. It makes it more satisfying when/if we do reach some of our goals later in the season. |

Only 2 stages left and with things so tight in the GC ranking, there should be plenty of action over the bumpy 196km.
Pfannberger starts the day in 37th place overall @ 2' 29". At his current fitness levels we don't expect him to improve too much on this for the rest of the race.
Bellotti joins an early break of 7 riders including Steegmans and Burghardt.
Burghardt fancies his chances alone today and leaves his breakaway companions behind. He'll have 120km of a solo ride to the finish if he 's going to make it.
Di Luca's LPR team controls the peleton, and with no GC dangers in the breakaway, allow it to gain a maximum lead of 12'.
30km and over the crest of a hill Pfannberger attacks. Will this stir up some action?
It certainly does! Di Luca, Evans and Cancellara are among those to join him on the break.
Nuyens, Devolder, Kirchen and Schleck all join in. There are only 12km left.
Pfannberger has been unable to counter all these attacks and drops back to the peleton. Up front Evans, Di Luca, Garzelli, Gilbert and Nuyens have Burghardt in their sights. But the German is already passing the final kilometer marker. Can they catch him and will Evans take the lead from Di Luca with the bonifications?
They start their sprint. Di Luca is looking strong!
Burghardt holds on and takes a terrific stage win. What a great breakaway!
Di Luca beats Devolder and Evans for 2nd and will extend his GC lead.
Leipheimer was nowhere to be seen today and drops back to 10th. Astana have really shown nothing in this year's race. Di Luca also takes leadership of the points ranking now.

The 7th and final stage of Tirreno Adriatico 2008 and should suit the sprinters. If Di Luca, as he is widely expected to, hangs on to the leader's jersey today, we should see some great Italian celebrations tonight!
Pfannberger decides he'll try to get our team some exposure and breaks away early. Will the peleton let him go?
The answering is a resounding no and they quickly up the pace and drag him back. That's taken a lot of energy and there is plenty of the stage left to go. We send Sabido off this time and he soon is at the head of the field.
12km to go and all escapees have been hauled back. Euskatel starts to drive the train. Unfortunately, Pfannberger's early exertions have taken their toll and he's a long way behind the peleton.
2km out and Paolini pulls around his leadout man and its between him and O'Grady. Di Luca is also taking part in the sprint - he's got his points lead to defend. What a competitor!
Paolini takes his 2nd stage win and Boonen pips O'Grady for 2nd.
Di Luca takes the overall and the points in a superb stage race performance. For us however, Pfannberger's 98th position overall at almost 13 minutes down means we may have to rethink our policy of entering these ProTour races with average and unfit riders.

Its late March in Northern Italy and that can mean only one thing. Its time for la classica di Primavera, Milan Sanremo, the sprinters' classic. The first Monument of the season and at 294km, the longest of the one-day races. It doesn't fit into our main goals so we've sent a weak team and the race will be simulated.
